FWIW, and in my defense, I asked who it was while I was on a device that didn't allow motion, i.e., it was a static image of a Big Blue player.

Yeah, you're pretty astute and I know that post probably knocked me down a few pegs. I felt rather silly when I later saw the full thing.

I'll say this: 1) it's damn impressive how the Wings are reloading after making the past century or so of postseasons. 2) Detroit is [del]one of[/del] the most impressive venue I've seen in the NHL. And, I doubt I'm going to change this view after Feb. 6th.

They have a lot more than just Larkin coming up.

DETROIT ? Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was highly determined to play hockey again after his latest concussion and worked hard over the summer to get back on the ice.

He appeared to heading in the right direction through training camp and the preseason.

But, now Franzen has suffered a setback that apparently leaves his future in doubt.

"He's had a return of some of the headaches, some of the symptoms that he's had in the past," coach Jeff Blashill said Thursday.

Franzen has been placed in short-term injured reserve (minimum seven days). Franzen hasn't skated the past two days, after being scratched from Tuesday's game when he didn't feel good.

"I think right now, we don't know what the future's going to hold," Blashill said. "We're focused on the 20 guys we're going to have dressed tomorrow night.

"Obviously, we want him to get well, but again I don't know what that means, I don't know what the future holds with that."

Franzen averaged 12:57 in ice time in two games, picking up one assist while playing mostly on the third line, with Riley Sheahan.

Blashill said he feels "unbelievably" bad for Franzen.

"I think he's a guy who's been through a tough go," Blashill said. "I think he's a great person. He really wanted to get to where he felt good about playing hockey, so I feel real bad for him."

Franzen said before training camp that he was experiencing symptoms every week but he reported no issues during camp and the preseason.

"You don't like to see anybody go through injury issues and certainly for him he's battled, worked hard through the summer, got himself in great position," Blashill said. "So you certainly don't want to see it, none of his teammates want to see it, I don't want to see it but it's the reality right now and I feel extraordinarily bad for him.

"From the hockey team's perspective I've never focused on who's not available, I've focused on who's available, but from a personal standpoint I wish he wasn't going through this."

  7. your right, we have Nedomlel and Tangradi too :)

  8. will, i heard about franzen on the way home from the doctor's today. this sucks. i have to agree, he's likely done now. i will miss him, a lot :(

the only good thing about it is that jurco and ferraro are safe now, for the time being.

  9. this is getting ridiculous with Franzen, hes obviously having long term lingering affects. just retire man, its not worth being a vegetable the rest of your life. I like the Mule but I seriously doubt he gets back to 100% at this point. I hope Im wrong

having now watched a few games with this Larkin kid I really think hes the best young player Detroit has had since Yzerman. he plays with no fear, is lightning fast and has an excellent wrister. Hes not intimidated by the older guys and goes in the corners etc. this kid is an absolute stud. he will have the C on his chest before long. I know were only a handful of games into the season but Im sold - this kid is the real deal

CALGARY -- The Detroit Red Wings will be without center Brad Richards because of a back injury when they look to halt a three-game losing streak against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday.

"His back is acting up a little bit so it looks like he might be out," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We were hoping he'd be fine but it wasn't too good today, so he won't go today. It's a day-to-day thing right now, as far as I know."

Richards signed a one-year contract with Detroit (3-3-0) on July 1 and has two assists in six games. He had 12 goals and 37 points with the Chicago Blackhawks last season, and 14 points in 23 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help Chicago win the Stanley Cup.

Forward Joakim Andersson is expected to take his place in the lineup.

Blashill reconfigured his defensive pairings in an attempt to spark his struggling club.

Brendan Smith, who has been a healthy scratch for the past two games, will dress in place of Jakub Kindl and play alongside Jonathan Ericsson.

"You're looking for the best chemistry, the guys that work the best together," he said. "Sometimes until you try it you don't know. I think, to a man, each guy can still be better regardless of pairings, but hopefully with the pairings we're putting them in a spot to be successful."

Kyle Quincey and Danny DeKeyser will play together, while Mike Green, who also signed July 1, is expected to pair with Niklas Kronwall.

"Sometimes you just need a different element out there," said Green, who has one assist in six games. "I think we're all still trying to feel each other out, at least I am. I think it's a good changeup. I think that we needed it."

The Red Wings will face a new-look defense from the slumping Flames (1-5-0) too.
