DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings get a couple of key players back in the lineup tonight with the return of forward Justin Abdelkader and defenseman Danny DeKeyser, but Johan Franzen will miss the game due to an illness.

Franzen has not skated the past two days. The club doesn't believe it's the mumps but Franzen will have tests.

Tomas Tatar was back on the ice today after battling the flu the past couple of days.

"I didn't feel good before the Toronto game and after I had a little flu," Tatar said.

Tatar was not concerned that he might have mumps, which has spread through the NHL the past month, with more than a dozen players contracting the illness.

"Not really," Tatar said. "I had normal symptoms of flu, running nose and a little cough."

The Red Wings placed forward Stephen Weiss on short-term injured reserve (seven days) in order to create a roster spot and keep defenseman Xavier Ouellet on the team for now. Weiss (shoulder separation) isn't eligible to come off IR until Saturday.

Abdelkader missed seven games with a separated shoulder. DeKeyser sat out two games with an upper-body injury after getting hit in the head.

The Red Wings will try to snap a three-game winless skid (0-1-2) against Columbus, which has won six in a row.

"I think Columbus has a real good hockey club," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "They seemed to have found their mojo or whatever you want to call it and they're playing better, so it'll be a good test for us tonight."

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings were burned Tuesday by a recent problem - lack of goal-scoring - and an issue that's plagued them for the past three seasons - shootouts.

Jimmy Howard was tremendous in regulation and overtime, giving his team a chance to win. But Sergei Bobrovsky was just as stellar for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Both goaltenders were perfect until the shootout, when a predictable outcome unfolded. The Blue Jackets scored on two of three shots against Howard to claim a 1-0 victory at Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings (17-7-8) are winless in a season-high four games (0-1-3), with three of the losses coming in shootouts. They are 1-6 in shootouts this season. Howard is 0-6, having allowed 11 goals on 15 shots. His team has scored only four goals on 19 shootout attempts.

"We've spent a lot of time working at it, whether it's watching the other goalies or whatever," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Howie needs to find a way to get a win. That's it."

That said, Babcock acknowledged that Howard, who's been strong this season, enabled his team to get a point.

"We had chances, they had chances," Babcock said. "Both goalies were outstanding."

The Blue Jackets (13-15-2) have won seven in a row following a 6-15-2 start.
Both goalies are credited with a shutout. Bobrovsky made 30 saves for No. 10 in his career. Howard recorded his 20th and second this season (both vs. Columbus) by stopping 29 shots.

"If it wasn't for (Howard) on a few of those plays, it could have easily been 2-0 or 3-0 in the third period," Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser said. "He's been solid for us all year. (Ansar Khan, mlive)

Gordie Howe ?Mr. Hockey? Makes an Amazing Recovery

Following the press coverage of our father?s deteriorating medical condition, the Howe Family was contacted in late November by Dr. Maynard Howe, (CEO) and Dave McGuigan (VP) of Stemedica Cell Technologies. McGuigan knew our family as a result of his previous employment with the Detroit Red Wings. Stemedica is a biotechnology company that manufactures allogeneic adult stem cells in its US government licensed, cGMP facility in San Diego, California. Although no relation, Dr. Howe and his brothers Drs. David and Roger are hockey players and big Gordie Howe fans, having grown up in Minnesota. Islanders 2, Red Wings 1: Jimmy Howard injured as Detroit's winless skid extended to five games

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings spent too much time chasing the puck Friday and not enough time on offense.

It resulted in a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders at Joe Louis Arena, which extended the Red Wings' season-long winless streak to five games (0-2-3).

The Islanders speed and tenacity had the Red Wings on their heels much of the night as they outshot Detroit 32-18.

"Give them credit, they're a really good team, but at the same time we gave them way too much room out there, way too many turnovers," Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "It's hard to play that way. We know they're a good team. They're going to come after us.

"We had the energy but we didn't look quick enough."

Still, coach Mike Babcock and several players were pleased with their effort.

"I like tonight's game for it being a good opportunity to grow," Babcock said.
Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard left the game after the first period with a lower-body injury. Babcock had no update on the severity of the injury.

Petr Mrazek played well over the final 40 minutes, stopping 22 of 23 shots, but he had little margin for error.(Ansar Khan, milive)

The Red Wings have two more home games before a three-day Christmas break - Sunday against Colorado and Tuesday vs. Buffalo. Then they begin a grueling stretch where they play 19 of 26 games on the road.

I find this funky scoreless groove their in partly to blame by the droughts of several core players who couldnt buy a goal. It was nice to see Zetterberg finally get one, but that's not nearly enough. As long as they keep chipping away and dont get down on themselves, I think the hard work and effort will pay off. The meantime is the hard time.

Pavel Datsyuk referred to his reunion with Henrik Zetterberg as "like a wish at Christmas," with Justin Abdelkader completing the trinity.

The trio practiced together today, in response to a five-game winless streak that has seen the Detroit Red Wings score just five times.

"We need more shoot and more score," Datsyuk said. "Last few games, we not score much. It's hard to win when we score one. It's a little bit tough time, frustrating, but we stick together when playing."

Tatar was of similar mindset after being back with Riley Sheahan and Tomas Jurco, saying, "it's nice to be reunited this way."

Coach Mike Babcock said he switched lines around because, "we're not winning. Whatever can help us win, it doesn't matter to me."

The 0-2-3 streak comes after the Wings had won seven of their previous eight games, prompting Babcock to speculate, "I don't know if it's part of the success disease, if it's a little complacency. You get feeling good about yourself and you come off it a little bit. We've got to find a way to come out on the high side of things."

The Wings have two games remaining to get feeling good about themselves going into the Christmas break. Stephen Weiss (shoulder) won't be back for Sunday's hosting of Colorado, and sounded like an outside shot at being ready for Tuesday's game against Buffalo.

Jimmy Howard is also out Sunday with a lower-body injury, which prompted Tom McCollum to be called up to back up Petr Mrazek, which necessitated Xavier Ouellet being shipped to Grand Rapids for the roster spot. General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press that Howard may be ready for Tuesday.

Goaltender Petr Mrazek has played well for the Detroit Red Wings whenever he's been called up to fill in over the past three seasons. But he hasn't won at home yet (0-3).

Mrazek has a chance to win for the first time in his career at Joe Louis Arena tonight against the Colorado Avalanche. Jimmy Howard is out with a lower-body injury.

Mrazek has made only two starts at JLA, both last season, and the Red Wings were shut out in both, the most recent a 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Dec. 23. 2013.

The Red Wings haven't been scoring much lately, with only five goals during a five-game winless skid (0-2-3).
