You've also said more than once that the team is going to continue to get younger as well :p , and you prefer the quant hockey average to better reflect what is going on. It goes right to the point I've taken exception to, and that's the perception of what the team is and where it's moved to.

And part of why I'm saying they're the same , only marginally younger (using nhlnumbers or qualitative analysis you dislike), or older no matter what is used to measure today and moving forward is because I don't give a fuck about who filled in for freakish injuries last year, I'm looking at the actual contracts and dobs on those contracts and rights that go past July 1st today.

I'm not saying old is bad, because given the circumstances, I think older is better for 2015. Turning over and getting younger are two different things and one is mistaken for the other in many conversations.

  2. because it is. the only thing that makes a team younger is turnover. EVERY team ages by one year from season to season, unless they replace older players with younger ones. while u make a HUGE deal about how the kids who played this year weren't intended to, they DID. and several will be fulltime starters. i'm not going to argue with someone who refuses to acknowledge that several roster spots will be occupied by much younger players than those same slots 2 seasons ago.

    Nevertheless, it still moves.

  3. and maybe "continue" is poorly chosen, but i'm talking to someone who refuses to accept what happened this year, and rationalizes it away as an untentional statistical fluke. the presence of those fluke youngsters in the lineup will CONTINUE next season - and this time, it will be by INTENT. they will be there, not because some old guy gets hurt next season, but because they've earned roster spots.

That's the first specific time frame you mentioned.
I was talking about last year to this year and what they're doing. I have no objection to saying they're a younger roster than at the end of the 12' season but I would say that based on qualitative analysis more than anything. ;)

    12' http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000342012.html
    14' http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0000342014.html

More games played by under league average players in 12' than over, almost even in 14'
More young players saw the ice in 14' but so did more old players
Fewer young players saw the ice in 12' but there were fewer young players too.

The difference by the ACTUAL usage between 12 and 14 is negligible at best. Volume twists the perception in my opinion since more younger faces saw hit the ice in 14', they DID NOT see more games than the younger players in 12'. Time spent on the active roster was similar as well following transaction history. The utilization and construction (those intentions as you call them) favors the team getting younger (I consider them younger from 12') over a 2 year period, but the real numbers for usage do not.

Using 13' to 14' is better suited as an example as long as 15' matches 14' for usage.

I understand what you're saying and I'm not going to change your mind I assume, but is it starting to make sense why I don't consider the wings to have been moving in a younger direction in the big picture lately?

Everything is setting up (actual contracts and assuming RFA extensions) to have the average age closer to the 12' or 13' on the quant hockey basis. They look like they're going to get older that way, but I think they'll probably end up being about the same as I see 14'. The picture may change depending on how Kenny fills the other contract slots.

Well, could be semantics here too, but when I think of roster turnover or read about it happening, it's just flipping it around, not really changing what it's comprised off in terms of types of players. Turnover keeps things similar, a shift or movement is what changes the age imo, based on how I usually see it used. We may disagree on what it means exactly.

Yes, but there are teams that actively get older on average and in relation to the rest of the league like STL or NJ and actively get younger in the same way like ANA or TB by flipping the composition of the roster in the offseason and throughout the year or multiple years.

in a direction or a circle?

This seems very un redwings like. I'm not saying I blame Kenny, but has this happened with other staff recently.

Given Babcock's one year left, and the lack of movement for bench bosses around the league this offseason so far, I'm starting to think Babcock is almost gone for sure 12 months from now. Not a bold opinion since they haven't been to the CF since 09', but this seems to match up with what appears to be posturing when it comes to coaches in a number of cities. Looks like Kenny gave Blashill all the leverage meaning he's probably in line to take a job at least as an assistant in the next year right?

I wish coaches, scouts, fo staff, etc. could be traded for. I'm not a fan of front offices losing personnel without anything in return.

Well, its just an opinion of mine, of course, but maybe Holland is just trying to keep together his greatest assets, an ace in the hole, just in case Babcock decides to go elsewhere. The 'King of lennie' out of Toronto, was spreading rumors that the Maple Leafs could and should offer Babcock double or even triple his current salary, and that would be an offer he probably wouldnt refuse. Babcock then comes out and says, he's very happy in Detroit and the discussion of contracts is not an issue. Then Carlyle gets extended.

I also think its a matter of being very protective of Blashill, because of the success he has delivered with the guy's in GR. GR has been condition critical for the Wings keeping their heads above water the past couple seasons. 1) Blashill is only getting better, and developing his own skills and individual style. 2) HC's are very, very difficult to come by lately. There seems to be a few guy's floating around, but the success rate of the recent coaching changes and swaps, hasnt really been all that impressive... maybe thats even why Carlyle, much to quite a few peoples surprise, was extended.

I just think that if there is a shadow of doubt between Holland and Babcock on Mikes future in Detroit, they dont want Blashill to get away. Blashills success in GR is really painting a bright future for himself and the Wings organization. He's been great in GR, and he may be the man if Mike moves on. Maybe behind the scenes, Blashill has gotten some offers already. I dont know...

I agree with everything you said Will. I was taking the next step suggesting that there's likely more than a shadow of doubt about Babcock's future in Detroit since a move like this appears to be pretty rare.

I don't know the dynamics of that front office, they're very quiet, but it sure looks like either Kenny has this all mapped out (staff turnover) or he was willing to give all leverage to Blashill after 15' meaning Blashill gets everything he wants or bolts.

I was about to post a few more things on that topic:

Looks like Kenny probably knew he might lose him before he made the comment about protecting Blashill.

Looks like any coach replacement scenarios in Toronto still have life.

Yep. Looks like they new there was going to be some spots to fill on the staff...and we are just getting the picture in a little more clarity. Interesting about Carlyle too.

  12. both. it moves in a circle around the center of the galaxy, and it moves in a relatively straight line away from the singularity.

  14. That type of attitude is one of the many reasons I want Jimmy Howard to be a Red Wing for life.

i like how Mike Babcock perceives himself during conversation in the third person:
?I have a contract for a year; Ken Holland has a contract for a year,? Babcock said. ?I assume the sequence of events are, they deal with Ken Holland first, and then they deal with Mike Babcock..."

i seem to remember Senator Bob Dole doing that back in the 90s.
Bob Dole: "What's Bob Dole gonna do? Well, I'll tell you what Bob Dole's gonna do? Bob Dole's gonna..." Or something to that effect.

  20. Blashill has done an excellent job. hes had a great deal of success everywhere hes been. I think Babs may be keeping the seat warm for him. If Babs leaves Im confident this guy could step in a be solid, besides hes a Western guy - he has to be good *THUMBSUP* I like Babcock and think hes one of the best in the league but wouldnt be suprised if he leaves. Hed be a very hot commodity on the open market. Havent had a chance but I plan on looking up my offseason wishlist soon, you know the one I put together every year and not a single player I want is ever signed.....yeah that one
