DeShone Kizer making case to be Browns starting QB

You have to get real tricky and creative if you are going to let Kessler uncork the long ball. Shanny used to come up with ingenious gimmicks for Brian Hoyer to get the ball downfield. Guys like him and Kessler can't throw the 18 yard out pattern to the far hash, so you have to be creative, which limits the playbook considerably...Regardless of how many stats you throw out, Kessler can't take a 7 step drop and deliver the ball to all parts of the field.

    But this guy can:

Just for the record, comparing Cody Kessler with Brady, Brees and Rodgers is uhm.....

  3. Sorry SAS but stats can be very misleading...throwing a ball 20 yds and having it land 5 ft out of bounds is Kessler's way of throwing down field...hes very very conservative w the ball and wuld rather miss out of bounds than give his WR a chance on a 1 on 1 deep ball

If history tells us anything, its probably a good bet that whoever is QB1 for the 3rd pre-season game - he will be the starter for week 1.

This team isn't about following history.

Point is, if the QB that SEEMS to be the best option is a rookie, that 3rd game is the best opportunity you will have to expose his rookie issues. If they rear their ugly head, you're not too late to continue into the season with the veteran. If he doesn't look like a rookie, you can feel good that he won't regress by making a few rookie mistakes in the regular season while learning on the job, which we all know it the best way to get him where he needs to go.

I'll be honest, I don't expect him to look as good on Monday as he did on Thursday. But, I want to see how he reacts to the step above competition. I need to know where his progress has taken him to this point.

It's a good thing that stat is based on completions and not attempts then, I suppose.

I encourage you to explore those links more. They also have intended air yards, which is what you're alluding to here, as well as the differential. Kessler's differential again falls in line with the elite quarterbacks in the NFL (Kessler -1.8, Brady -1.7, Ryan -1.7, Wilson -1.9).

    In fact, he's not.

Kessler scored 20.5% in 2016. That was 16th overall. To give some flavor, Cam Newton (24.7%) was first. Kessler was fourth-highest rated passer in this Top 16. Brian Hoyer (97.9 rating, 22.0%), Dak Prescott (104.9 rating, 20.9%), and Matt Ryan (117.1 rating, 20.8%) were the only ones posting better passer ratings.

Brady (17.6), Brees (17.5), Rodgers (16.4), Wilson (17.9), and Roethlisberger (14.7) are all less aggressive as passers.

There is nothing misleading about this stat. Passes are tracked when they're thrown into tight windows, as a percentage of total attempts. The quarterbacks with the strongest arms are all in the 20%+ range by and large. This isn't a coincidence either as they're likely trusting their arms to make the tight throws.

The fact that Kessler, a quarterback without a strong arm, is attempting these passes at a same rate while also having a significantly higher completion percentage and quarterback rating speak very highly of him and also completely destroy any preconceived notion or narrative about him not taking risks.

Sorry bud. Those are the facts.

    1. Establish the running game.
    2. Deploy play action
    3. Repeat
    It's actually not that tricky.

lol! Why are you debating this? Everyone knows Kessler has limited arm talent, and so do you. If Cody is your starter, he'll be poised and annoyingly conservative. Careful with the football, yes. Take way too many sacks, yes. Limit the playbook considerably, yes....In the end, it will lead ho hum boring offense, aggravating drive stalls, plenty of losses and multiple concussions...because it appears at best, Kessler is back-up material in this league. He doesn't belong in the same sentence with the QB's you keep comparing him to...

All that, and yet, in his 2nd year in the league, after being handed the starting job before mini-camp even started, and having 9 starts under his belt from last year, Kessler has now fallen to 3rd on the depth chart behind the newly acquired and much maligned "Brockweiller", and an unpolished rookie 2nd rd pick learning the NFL game from scratch....C'mon man. If Kessler was worthy of being talked about, people would be talking about him. Even the Browns media has mentioned how he has been the forgotten man in the battle for starting QB here...Reports are that he's just been awful. Holding it too long. Passes getting batted down. We know the story. Pulling some stat out doesn't qualify Kessler to be mentioned with all those future HoF QB's...It's actually pretty funny. Brock lobster has won the starting gig, while you tell me that I need to slow my roll on the Kizer front, all while you continue to pound the drum for Cody Kessler.lol!..Only in Brownstown.

tbh, if this is what we're thinking about starting:

... then maybe I am softening my stance on Kizer starting Day 1.

Yep. Kizer's intelligence is never in question. He's aware Joe knows a little more about this league...

It's not just about the opener. Maybe Kizer will pass Brock in the next two weeks, and maybe he won't....Pittsburgh is known for exotic defensive looks, and blitzes. If Kiser gets the nod in that one, I think it will probably say more about Osweiller...There's no doubt that Pittsburgh will do everything they can to disrupt and confuse whomever the Browns start at QB, and if the coaches decide they'd rather go with a more experienced guy, it would be understandable...Eventually, sooner rather than later, this will be Kizer's team...

Honestly, I think the Browns are hoping for two things:

    1) Kizer is head and shoulders the best QB to come out of this draft and the past 10 drafts..Obviously we all "HOPE" that is the case...more likely than not, it is something lower than those expectations, but I think they would settle for a QB that learns quickly and takes this "competition" by the balls and forces them to start him sooner than later.

    2) Osweiler does just enough to make another team (Jaguars, Bills, etc..) believe he can help them win games and that Kizer flat out won the competition by being a great young QB...drawing a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick, along with salary relief in the process in trade.

If those two things happen over the next 3 weeks, it would cap what seems to be on the surface, a successful off season.

  16. Nobody is trading for Osweiler...he will be starting week 1 here...after that it is anybody's guess

Jacksonville has too much talent not to.

They know the Browns will eventually be starting DeShone Kizer (whether it's Game 2, Game 9, or 2018). Osweiler is a known trade commodity. Jacksonville has too much talent on both sides of the ball to have a season tanked by crappy QB play.

Osweiler is a bad QB, but Bortles/Henne are worse and no team is signing Bob Griffin or Colin Kaepernick.

The only hang-up is going to be price.

  18. Kizer doesnt think hes ready and Thomas doesnt think hes ready...therefore he must not be ready...also why trade your best option at QB right now? My guess is the pick will b low...4th or lower...side note Winston was shredding that Def last nite...too bad Evans had the dropsies smh
Despite allowing a perfectly thrown first-quarter deep ball by Jameis Winston slip through his fingers, Evans was impressive for a second consecutive week.

Kizer is humble, it's much much different than not believing in himself..

I can't disagree with SAS on this one...if Osweiler is the best option, we may be in for a long year. He hasn't looked good, that goes for the Saints game and practice. I really believe Hue will not start Kizer before his time, BUT, I also think his time will come much sooner than later.

After that decision is made, Kessler remains the best backup option, so there is absolutely no reason not to trade Osweiler.

With respect to Joe Thomas, this QB competition isn't over yet...

    From Cleveland.com

    1. DeShone Kizer still in the mix to start on opening day
Kizer might not be ready today, but he's still in the mix for Sept. 10 because of his impressive physical skills. He's been promoted to No. 2 for the Giants game Monday night so the coaches can see him against better talent. If he outplays starter Brock Osweiler, he'll gain consideration to start against the Steelers. Kizer continues to make dazzling throws in practice, including a 57-yard drill-winning Hail Mary to Seth DeValve, that have the coaches excited.

"He’s got a great long arm but he can throw corner routes, post routes, skinny post on a line,’’ said quarterbacks coach David Lee. “He doesn’t limit you. You can throw whatever you want to because he’s got such great arm talent."

But that’s not all. Kizer had the football acumen to succeed at this level, as evidenced by a play in the first preseason game in which he cleared out the linebacker with a shoulder-shrug and completed a 22-yard comeback route on third-and-24.

“The flat defender moved left and he threw right behind him,’’ said Lee. “That’s really, really good. I hadn’t taught that yet because I don’t think he’s ready for it yet, but that’s how natural his instincts are and how good he is and can be. He did that on his own."

The Browns might opt for Osweiler in the opener because of his experience, but Kizer can make the decision difficult with a good Monday night performance and a solid “dress rehearsal’’ game in Tampa the following Saturday.
