Now they take Riley Ridley? What the fuck is Pace doing? Now have Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarelle Patterson and Javon Wims who they supposedly really like. Not to mention trying to get both tight ends involved and all 74 running backs they have on the roster now. And don’t anyone say “you can never have too many weapons...” When four of your weapons are sitting on the bench at any given time, that’s too many weapons.
I would have preferred an OT or edge rusher with that 4th round pick. I really like Javon Wims. Thought he didn't really get an opportunity, save week 17 where he had some big catches. Ridley doesn't seem as good as Wims. I'm guessing they view this as Bellamy's replacement? My concern about the current WR group is durability. A-Rob was banged up a lot and Miller dealt with the recurring shoulder. I'm guessing they view Ridley as good depth and possible special teamer but I agree WR was not a position of need.
Not having an upgrade isn’t equal to being weaker. And losing draft capital doesn’t make your roster equal automatically. Talent wise....how is this roster weaker top to bottom? Because I don’t see it. I think you’re being overly negative about this.
I just don’t see a spot for him anywhere besides 4-5 WR sets. To me, that’s not worth a 4th round pick. Should have gone DB, edge, O line.
Well the Bears have options if AR of Gabriel decline or get hurt as their contracts age. I’m fine with that. He doesn’t have to be a day 1 starter to make an impact eventually. But yeah I would have preferred depth in the defensive backfield or at linebacker instead. I think this was a case of Pace going BPA because Ridley was high on a lot of boards.
I am probably being overly negative. This team should be a Super Bowl contender in 2019. It can't be denied that Pace believes this. It also can't be denied that Pace is definitely mortgaging the future to win right now. All our eggs are in the 2019-2020 basket and it's up to Trubs to step up and for our good health fortune to continue. Otherwise we're going to be looking at many losing seasons starting in 2-3 years.
You’re right. We keep having drafts like this and we are going to be picking early sooner than later. A third, a fourth, a sixth, and 2 sevenths. That’s it. That’s all we got. That’s not how teams are built for the long haul.
This caliber RB is always available as a UDFA. Waste of a pick. Other than Montgomery, who we traded up for, not a whole lot to like from the 2019 haul.
5’8” 160 pound CB and another running back. Cool. Let’s end this perfect draft with another WR. Preferrably one that is under 6’ and slow. And can’t run routes.
A convert from receiver to corner without much experience. Project but his measurables and physical attributes look good. I don’t mind a pick like that.
Tons of valid points. I think Pagano was an excellent hire all things considered. He and Fangio both worked together on the ravens defense from 07-09. And while Pagano was certainly not the best of head coaches......he was a pretty solid defensive coordinator before Indy. Even in his presser Pagano said he isn't changing the scheme much at all. Point is, this is a move for continuity, its not like they're going back to a 4-3. Wont argue Amos or Callahan, but Skreen's contract can be bailed on after year 1. They like Tolliver, and are going to give plenty of guys chances in camp. Khalil Mack did not come without cost, guys. Pace didn't just decide to have a draft like this for shits and giggles. All things considered, this was a pretty good year to have a tame draft like this. They will have more picks next year, including 2 2nds and comp picks for Amos and Callahan in the 3-5 round range. Some pundits speculate Josh Bellamy could get them something, which would be the best thing he's done for the organization. I dont remember how the comp picks work, because I don't know how much signing Clinton Dicks offsets comp pick return.
Understood about Mack, and I’d do it again every time. He’s a generational player. What they didn’t have to do is give up two fourths and a fifth for a running back, especially when they just signed Davis and Patterson (WR/RB) and let Howard walk. Like has been discussed, it seems like Pace keeps on creating his own holes to fill, which is hindering his ability to fill holes where needed - especially when picks are limited.
The thing is though...how many big holes does this team actually have? Compared to how many they had when Pace took over? I have a laundry list of complaints about Pace and things I think he’s done wrong. But....he’s also done a lot right and this team is currently in a good position. So I’m willing to pull back the criticism a little and give the guy the benefit of the doubt for this draft.
Well he did get Khalil Mack in the 1st this year, and Kevin White with his first ever overall pick, Sooo Khalil Mack>Kevin White so he's learned some things too.
