I don't really see it as hysteria, not here anyway. Just a lot of people agreeing on a guy who should've made the 53. But its all relative rob. If the Bears had a really strong position group then there wouldn't be so much talk about Gentry. The GM put that group together, rather pointing the finger at fan hysteria maybe point it at the GM who's put together the sh_tty position group?

Just because I feel the reaction to Tanner Gentry's initial release was over the top doesn't mean I excuse Pace for the lack of talent at the WR position. It's his roster. He owns it for good or for bad. I'll let it play out a little before making up my mind just how bad it is.

 

Like ive said before, Bellamy i expected for his prowess on coverage teams. Thompson is a bad returner who is also a bad receiver. McBride is a complete stab in the dark. Give me Gentry over either of those two.

I think right now Thompson makes the 53 because he is a more polished receiver than Gentry. I disagree with your assessment of Thompson as a returner. He may not be a dynamic returner but I put him in the above average category.

You say that you will take Gentry over both Thompson and McBride. Just curious as to what your basing that off of. Both outplayed Gentry in the preseason and both bring much more to ST than Gentry does. And I'm the one that loves hope.

 

Deonte Thompson is an average return man on his best day and a turd of a receiver every day he steps on the field.

 

Is it just me or does it seem like every couple of years there's a great white hope at wideout that gets cut - to much dismay of our fans - and then the guy winds up on the couch or in the CFL?

But Danny Amendola cleared waivers once in his career and was signed to a practice squad. So did Rod Smith. And Arian Foster. And Danny Woodhead.

Gentry isn't any of those guys. Just sayin...

 

Gentry looked good in camp, looked great in college, and looked good in real games.

I don't think his color had anything to do with why many felt he should make the team. At least it didn't with me.

 

I'm not sure why you felt it was relevant to point that out as I could care less if White was waived he would be picked up. You are inadvertently proving my point that high draft picks will get multiple shots even if they don't prove it on the field. I personally think Gentry has more potential than White and think that will prove out over time. Unlike you, I don't base my opinions on facts read from what other people are saying, I base them off my own observations. I could be wrong but one undrafted free agent WR has already proven to be better than the #7 pick in the draft, I don't doubt they could have found another. Again, that is not a high bar but just proves at how epically bad the pick was.

McBride did outperform Gentry and every other WR in the preseason by leading all of them in dropped passes. Well done.

I guess I missed the part where the most important part of playing WR is to be great at Special Teams. I guess your right BigRobo.

If you have a WR corp like the Bears do I guess it is more important to keep a WR with Kick Return abilities since you will probably be doing that awful lot when your defense is worn out and giving up points because your offense can't score or move the ball.

 

I remember a lot of love for Sanzenbacher.

In the Bears defense, if they would have brought in a WR free agent they would bring in another Sam Hurd or Roy Williams.

I'm not a fan of Thompson but I'd put him in the top 3rd of returners. He was top tier in return yards last year, a good part of that is the number of returns, but his average was still near the top. I don't see him as much as a home run threat but more of a guy that can get more returns past the 35.

The priority should be receiving threats, of which the Bears have Kendall Wright. Markus Wheaton hasn't even practiced. Kevin White wasn't even a good #2 and is now slated as a #1. Bellamy and Thompson showed what they could do last year, were you impressed? So the wildcard is McBride. Is Gentry incapable of playing Special Teams? Do you know that?

Who said no high draft pick has ever been worse than an undrafted player? Not me. Just because I think White is a better WR at this stage than Gentry doesn't mean I think all high draft picks are better than all undrafted players.

I don't know if Meredith is a better WR than White. Both have injury issues. Cam was able to put together an impressive season last year. I think White still has the potential do the same or maybe better this season if he can move past his injuries.

White has more than 4 preseason catches in his limited playing career. You are correct that White has not been impressive in his limited playing time due to injury. IMO that doesn't mean that Gentry is automatically a better WR. I think your full of shit if you are truly basing your assessment on watching them play. When you compare there college tapes White is more impressive against higher competition with a lesser QB. When you compare there NFL footage Gentry's is extremely limited. Like I said 4 preseason catches. Now if you admit that you are taking the reports from practice into your assessment I sill wouldn't agree that Gentry has been more impressive or deserving of a spot on the 53 more than White. But at least I would take your assessment a little more seriously.

I really could care less what you do to form your opinions. I find it funny that you try to convince everyone that all your opinions are based solely off of what you see and nothing of what you read. Again what has Gentry showed that makes him a sure fire better receiving threat than any of they guys you mentioned above? Do you agree that ST are an important part of any player at the bottom of the roster? Unlike you I take into account what others closer to the situation have to say. The coaches feel Gentry needs more time to develop before he is put on the 53. Tape will show you that Bellamy, Thompson and McBride bring more ST ability than Gentry at the moment. Wheaton is the wild card. Because he hasn't practiced or played you cant really assess his abilities. But when he was last healthy he put up some good numbers as a third option on the Steelers. I could see why you would give him a spot over Gentry.
