This isn’t going away anytime soon. This virus seems to spread like it is being sprayed in the air like when they fog for mosquitoes.
This thing isn't a joke, they shut down half of italy (the wealthy half), 133 died in one day. If really hardline preventitve measures aren't put in place. The same thing can happen in any other part of the world.
I listened to a presentation from a noted economist at a national seminar I was attending for work, this past week. He spent some time talking about the effect of the coronavirus, and speculation on how things will go from here. He compared Europe's reported case trajectory with China's reported case trajectory, and noted their similarity. He noted that China's reported cases started to tail off around 60,000 - there was a rapid growth over several weeks getting to 60K, then only an increase of less than 20K over the next few weeks. While the virus is still an issue, obviously, China found a relative cap to the outbreak once they had reacted to it. With Europe currently at a similar rate, the hope is that they'll be able to cap the cases at a similar rate / timeline. And if that's the case, it would be reasonable to expect that in the US, as well (despite the terrible handling by this administration). The issue is obviously the reporting of cases, given how unreliable those numbers can be. That said, it's all we've got to work with... The economist said that he doesn't expect a massive impact to the US economy. He said that he does expect a significant downturn in GDP for March / April, but not enough of an impact to cause a recession. However, he warned that several countries in Europe might not be so fortunate, and that the impact this will have on the global economy bears watching - depending on the next few weeks, there might be worse consequences beyond the US economy. Personally, I survived a national conference of a few hundred people where my only job was to shake hands and talk with everyone there, so I'm pretty stoked. No signs of a virus, yet.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!
His brand shiny new Chief of Staff. Not that I'm reveling in this news, but I hope that this hits home for our Pres. and actually makes him spend money and deal with the issue instead of continuing the PR tour and hoax claims.
