On the political scale, grapes was a far right nationalist, Burke is moderate left and much more educated.

How about this, whenever he goes on a rant, you call it the Burkie Blast.

Skinny, I “liked” your post because I think it’s important for everyone to listen. The message is not enjoyable, but it is worthy of discussion and reflection.

The first half of the clip made me think this would just be another meaningless angry rant. Then - spoiler alert - he gets to conduct a genuine interview.

The “cancel society” is an issue that, first, needs to be acknowledged. Then, we need to debate the impact it has on free speech, and ultimately, therefore, on free society. There is a reason that Freedom of Speech is the FIRST Amendment to the U.S. Constitution*. (* Of course, I know that this is a Canadian story, but the “cancel society” is an international concern. Also, I am much more fluent in discussing such matters from an American perspective. I intend no insult to Canadians when I cite the US Constitution while responding to a Canadian story.)

The “cancel society” advocates have much to answer for given the apparent capriciousness under which it is enforced. (Just listen to the tape.)

The fact that HNC ratings (appear) to be plummeting is interesting. Ratings are a form of “crowd intelligence”. The masses articulate a message more effectively than possible by listening to individual voices. And, this gives cause for hope. The entire story is only partially written; there appears to be a powerful minority attempting to engineer the path society should follow. It remains highly questionable that their means credit their end-objectives.

This is something that people need to discuss; do not abdicate the authority to determine our future to those that prefer clandestine means.

I've known Dave for over ten years, he lives in Richmond Hill, every year on earth day when everyone is supposed to have their lights turned off for an hour, he makes sure all the lights in his house are on and the radio blasting. He exxagerates many things, so I wouldn't exactly take his word 100% on the ratings, as Mclean himself questions. I could see people tuning off during the intermission, but they still want to watch the hockey game. If ratings are down, maybe because people are sick of watching the leafs half assed efforts.

I think this is soley a corporate media issue, they have a right to represent their brand in a certain way and you have to watch for backlash. They recieved a lot of backlash and did their best to rectify the situation, they didn't immediately fire grapes. Like Mclean said, Don made the decision not backtrack, he challenged the execs and lost. He's done this in the past when he went toe to toe with CBC and they backed down, this time he's in his mid 80s and they cut their losses.

I miss watching grapes, but nothing lasts forever, what I really miss is watching players earn their salaries.

That’s somewhat the point. The “cancel society” has the ascendancy on the “backlash element” at this time. But there is another side to the story. And, those that are cajoled into kowtowing to their whim have merit to their views that are not being considered.

Some may have been “deeply offended” by Cherry’s rhetoric. They should have the RIGHT to be offended. But, does that right make it right for corporations to respond in the way they did?

I contend that society’s backlash may be harsher than if the kerfuffle over Cherry's comments been given the opportunity to play themselves out.

RC caved to the voice - to the fear - of a backlash. They may be whiplashed even worse. And, society further slips down the slope of intolerance.

Im just now catching up on some of this.

People like/tolerate free speech and opinionated editorials till it steps into their perceived comfort zone... then all of a sudden someone has crossed that line. I just don't understand the over-sensitive and knee-jerk reactions to what one person deams as an opinion. When a Cherry or a Willie speaks and shares his mind, its just that, nothing more than an opinion.

If I disagree with someone or take a counter stance with their idea's... so what? Many people in society, especially in the form of a governing power or some sort of control, want 'cookie-cutter' people... they can go to hell, period. Everyone is so damn sensitive or overly concerned about what Cherry said or the apology he never said that this gets blown up into something of an issue... when it was just an old hockey fans opinion.

Im a pawn in the game/life of chess, but I have some power... its just too bad we live in a moral debased, dumbing down of society era.

Long live - Grapes, NHL Hockey and free speech... and everything else that is good and beautiful.
