Don makes a good point about John Scott, but some folks would argue Scott doesnt belong in the NHL anyways.

Grapes feels threatened by the imports taking a spot from a canadian kid. The foreigners don't even represent 1% total. If a kid is losing a spot chances are he isn't making the nhl anyway, big chance.

 

it's funny because we've already seen the impact of import goalies making the US Jr ranks that much better.
Vladar (Bos- USHL) and Tomek (Phi- NAHL) were 3rd round picks last year and should both be playing in the CHL right now.

 

I guess Don needs to realize the game has evolved into a world-wide machine and part of his shtick has been the patriotic, im all Canadian all the time thing. He's like the over-protective dad or something that just want to preserve his country's heritage. I really dont know, just a hunch.

I still love the old coot and will miss him when he retires. He know's the time is coming soon when he has to hang em up, so i think he's working on his legacy. He wants to go down in history as the guy who stood for the Canadian. I can kinda dig where he's coming from in a way.

 

I like his segment, don't get me wrong, I'd like to think he's dead on about most things. They came out with a new rule in ontario regarding the foreigners. Their parents have to be living in the city or country for them to be exempt, they won't allow them to just come over by themselves. In ontario last year out of 5000 kids, only 19 were foreign born and without their parents here, if you do the math, it's pretty insignifigant. So many canadian kids get to take advantage of american scholarship programs in all sorts of sports (hockey,football,soccer,basketball), so this is kind of hypocritcal, I'm sure there's been a few times where they took roster spots from american kids.
Grapes appeals to an audience that he's not even a part of anymore, that patriotic and xenephobic culture you find in most rural towns in canada. He's been around the world and has long surpassed this type, and he's just doing it for the ratings. His patriotism often times comes across as bigotry, but he's far from a bigot, he contradicts himself between his on air personality that's been going on for thirty some years now and the real don. He's far from boring and that's what's kept him alive with the ratings all these years, he's a smart man.

 

He's got hair on top of his head in both. And it looks like a herpes sore during his playing days. I think Grapes ought to devote a segment to tales of his wild oats days.
