You guys could have had Mahomes, this isn’t 2020 hindsight. I wanted the Steelers to trade up like the chiefs did to get him. I knew he was going to be great and he’s already been a league MVP and a SB MVP in his two starting seasons. Why couldn’t GMs see this if an supposed idiot could?
Gee... where to start. The Browns were at the height of dysfunction in 2017 when they paired a traditional "football" coach with an analytics front office and general manager. The 1-15 record surprise, disgusted, and angered everyone. Hue Jackson's chief apologist, Mike Silver, was in the Browns' draft room for the whole thing. Despite his spin and Hue's revisionist history, Myles Garrett was always going to be the first overall pick. There's the bizarre story of Hue texted Deshaun Watson (Watson has the receipts, or lack thereof), insinuating that Hue wanted Watson at #12. There's a lot of truth to this as he was also furious they traded down at #12 with both Watson and Malik Hooker on the board. Based on his statements, it's pretty easy to see Hue wanted Watson (likely at #1) and Hooker (at #12). John Dorsey traded up ahead of the Browns because he "heard footsteps", so the Browns analytics front office very well could have been targeting Garrett at #1 (who they got) and Mahomes (at #12) who they lost to John Dorsey. Once they lost Mahomes, it made sense to trade down. To his credit, Sashi hasn't spilled all the tea (yet) from his time with the team. We know - from his implanted mouthpiece and his own revisionist history - that Hue never really wanted Mahomes. And why would he? Hue's prototype is a big, statuesque QB and Mahomes wasn't particularly large (6'2" and 220 pounds) and more of an improvisational passer. Why didn't Chicago take him in the trade up to #2 or San Francisco take him instead of *checks notes* Solomon Thomas?
All of this ignores the very obvious fact that Hue Jackson would have destroyed Mahomes, as he did Griffin, Kessler, Kizer, etc. In fact, there's no evidence that Patrick Mahomes would be Patrick Mahomes without Andy Reid and the already constructed team around him in Kansas City.
Because they are freaking morons. I knew Mahomes was the real deal and I don’t get paid millions to figure this out.
You know what's wonderful about this site ? They don't prune posts to make room on their server. It took a little effort but I went back through all of your posts from 2017. You know what I didn't find ? I didn't find a single post from you pounding the table for Pat Mahomes. Not. One. Post. So stop with the "I knew Mahomes was great" bullshit.
I didn’t post about it because I knew that the Steelers wouldn’t do it. I wanted him on the Steelers. I’m not lying about this. The Steelers were a playoff team and set with Roethlisberger so there’s no sense in making myself look stupid with that pipe dream. I thought people would ridicule me for it so I kept it to myself.
When I saw KC do it it kind of pissed me off that the Steelers wouldn’t do that. I don’t write about things that I believe are impossible. I know you will tell me I predict 14-2 every year for the Steelers but the Steelers have shown they are capable of doing that. 15-1 with a rookie QB none the less . The possibility of the Steelers trading up for a luxury pick is totally impossible.
To your credit, you did "pound the table" for Devin Bush last year - multiple times. Yet not a single peep about Pat Mahomes in 2017.
