So not unexpectedly: QB is top priority, as we well know. Then it's edge protection, and edge rushers / Corners. Impact positions. WR is a luxury item, and a headache.
Yep... and I guess even moreso this year given the "weirdness". Teams didn't get the in person interviews and maybe couldn't get a feel for the players. Definitely weren't able to put them through workouts, so you're relying on college film and there's an inherent tendency (I'd think) to go with the safer options - defensive and offensive lineman.
Here's hoping Odel and Jarvis come back 100%, but ya gotta expect the early season to look shoddy given the covid impact on practices, etc..... Maybe that helps us, maybe not. I can't help wonder how we're going from what we're dong now to live sports and 80,000 people on top of each other. There oughta be some really creative Dawg Pound masks showing up.
good point SAS. I'd think it would be natural, to play it safe, without the workouts and face to face interviews. Not sure whether relying on film nets a better or a worse result. Probably less scrambling to follow rumors, and tendency to follow trends in coverage, hype, etc.....
More info. is good. Again, it's coaching. He's gotta shift sides, and upgrade his abilities against the bull rush. Coaching. Remind me, who's our O line coach?
I'll buy that. Half way through round 1 4 OT's 3 QB's DL's CB'x 2 WR's 1 LB No RB's, TE's, S's, Interior Linemen Same priorities as top ten.
Raiders have a tough night. That's gotta be a pit-of-the-stomach feeling for fans: Covid-19 takes your draft from the city and then your GM torpedoes your picks for a second consecutive year. Whew.
Little more PFF.com on Jedrick Wills: Definitely sounds like he might be the best run-blocking tackle of the group but has work to do in pass sets. Maybe we actually run Chubb this year?
thanks again for the sourcing. Yep he'll need to grow into the position to handle NFL level big men, but I like the basics he gives us. Still a top prospect at LT is just what we needed. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
Lost in the noise . . . Wills played RT on a team with a left-handed QB. So, technically, he played on his QB's blind side. Did Saban put his best tackle on the right side?
This is an overlooked point of view imho. No OTAs, no voluntary workouts to cause drama that Odell isn't attending. On the other hand, the lack of facilities to get the level of workout they are accustomed to keep them at a professional level still is not there either. I hope they are able to reach that level on their own, especially coming off of injury.
Absolutely true on both counts.. He was the best tackle available to Saban, which is why he was on his blind side. However, it doesn't erase the three years of work put into making him the best RT in college football. It's hard to erase that over night. He will have to change everything he's learned to move over. He's so dominant and his feet are so good though, with the help of Bill Callahan, he should be able to do it sooner than later.
I'm happy with Wills. Many had him as OT #1..... I think in all of the mock drafts though, he was the only one (of the top 4 OT's) to never get mocked to Cleveland. lol!
I believe I invoked the name of Kevin Shaffer. Our right tackle spot has been a mess basically since 1999 (with the exception of Mitchell Schwartz's contract season)... now we have two top-notch right tackles.
This is exactly why it took Cleveland 0:07 to make their pick. They never expected him to be there. Shows you their tackle ranking order. I may also be underestimating how good Bill Callahan is going to be for this offensive line...
So we went into last night with possibly no bigger hole in the roster than left tackle (at least we have bodies at safety and linebacker). The came away with one of the "Big 4" and clearly a guy they didn't think they'd have a shot at. Sounds like the pick was generally well-received - most folks had Wills going at #4 to New York. Cross off one big position of need. So who y'all got tonight? If the approach holds, it's very possible that the Browns would be targeting another area of weakness on the team and looking for a potential Day 1 starter. For me, it's safety or linebacker and I think the board fell such that we have a shot at one of the best safeties in the class (in my opinion) in Delpit. From PFF.com:
This shouldn't be overlooked. It shows confidence in Wills as a blindside protector for an injury prone quarterback. The next question should be - How many of those hits on Tua actually came from his blind side?
