This better not be a Claypool situation all over again. Sweat is having a good year but 2nd round pick? Hmm. Does this mean we now to into the tank so that second round pick becomes pick #33?

  2. blang84 Legend Bears

I don't follow the Hawks so no idea about that, but a team could also fall into the trap of overpaying their guys only to get stuck with an unproductive player with a huge price tag for years.

I'm not going to be mad if we overpay for JJ but not going to be mad if we get a good haul in return for him either.

The Bears traded away Roquan and in return got a 2nd, a 5th, a depth LB/STer and the difference between Smith & Edmunds contracts which was about $30mil total and like $12-14mil gtd. I have no problem with that and wouldn't if they pulled of the same thing with JJ. But its not as simple as that. Its the riskier move. It worked with Noquan partly cos his contract demands were astronomical. JJ? Don't know.

What is the point of this?? This team is going nowhere this year, why make the move now? This is gonna be the fucking 30somthing overall pick again for Christ sake! Im starting to get serious Pace vibes with Poles and his inability to control his trade boner. His just happens to get erect at the trade deadline instead of the draft. After the utter disaster of the Claypool trade i would've thought he'd cool his jets but apparently not.

I like Sweat but now you've given him all leverage in negotiations too. Its just so dumb. If the Deadskins are prepared to accept a 3rd or 4th rounder then it makes more sense. But 32-38 overall? Fuck no. Just outbid people in FA with the money you'll have. Your gonna have to overpay him anyway now.

    This team is so desperate.

JJ isn't unproductive. Neither was Roquan.

We paid Kmet more than he's worth. Traded for Claypool for more than he's worth and probably just did the same thing for Sweat.

You can find more Montez Sweats in the draft than you can Jaylon Johnsons.

And I wasn't happy about it... just seems like no matter what the move is, it always backfires with this team.

  8. blang84 Legend Bears

A good CB is more important than a good ILB in today's NFL, we all agree. JJ isn't unproductive now, but he seems like the type of dude who could mail it in once he gets paid, sort of like EJax. We shouldn't pay him like he's a top 3 CB.

  9. EvertonBears M.V.P. Bears

Isn't unproductive yet, also isn't paid yet. How it pans out is unknown either way.

But at the risk of speaking for blang, in the point he was making the comp isnt Roquan, its Eddie Jackson. And it is a valid concern, tho i agree with the point you were also making about 10year rebuilds. At some point you have to pay your good players. I thought Kmet signalled they had entered that phase...

This feels different to last year.

We all thought Poles overpaid at the time, cos he did, but there was a logic to it. They had to get Fields more help. As a move it felt somewhat aggressive i guess. This doesnt feel aggressive, it feels desperate. I think Poles is starting to feel the the heat.

Also, and this may play into the decision to make a trade......pat & dline what does the edge talent look like next draft? Is t looking like a good year, a weak year? I've been doing well watching some college games on youtube, but im not up on specfic players to offer an opinion.

I don't think this is how an NFL GM should look at things. And I don't really know what you see that leads you to that.

He doesn't get a lot of turnovers but he plays great coverage weekly.

  12. blang84 Legend Bears

I see moments within games where his coverage is very solid and moments in the same game where his coverage effort is garbage. He's not consistent enough.

  13. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

We know that Poles told everyone he traded for Claypool because he didn't like the talent in the upcoming draft / free agency period. While I think we can all debate his talent evaluation, this was also my first thought in trying to decipher the motivations behind the trade.

I haven't been real plugged in this year, but most of the top DL prospects are either clearly interior guys, or are hybrid guys that make you question their ability to rush with their hand in the dirt. I'd have to watch closer to see which guys I feel can succeed in a 4-3 at the next level, but that's my first concern - that I don't know of a clear "pure DE" prospect off the top of my head that jumps off the page. This lends itself the conversation we had about the switch back to a 4-3 - it's just harder to find the players you need for the system the Bears are running.

  14. EvertonBears M.V.P. Bears

LOL, the 9ers just traded for Chase Young and their price was a 3rd rounder. But it will be at the end of the 3rd round since they dont suck, so in reality there will probably be somewhere in the region of 50places in between these two picks.

This team is a flat out mark and they're the only ones in the league who dont know it.

    All metrics say otherwise.

Am i reading this right. Did the Bears just allow JJ's people to go out and talk to other teams and find out what he was worth in terms of contracts? And he's now staying with the team for the rest of the season?

If so, very interesting. Doesnt this suggest that JJ just found out his value isnt as high as he thought it was?

Not to defend this move, but Young, while the better player, does have injury concerns that take his value down. And Sweat is a good player. I just can't fathom giving up another 2nd and THIS time you have to pay him immediately, even if he is much much better than Claypool. And DE is a need.

I think dline calls it out, this is like the Claypool trade in that he likely doesn't like the DE options in the draft, so he's "getting ahead" by nabbing a player now. Except that I think I can saw, without too much hyperbole, that almost every WR in the draft ended up better than Claypool because they at least are mostly still Rostered, and sure as shit didn't cost a late first rounder.

I forget where I read it, twitter or something, but the rumblings were exactly that, teams were not biting at the price Jaylon wants. So in that sense, this was a good move, hopefully now he comes back to the table a little more humbled. Regardless, he is a Bear through at least this year now, trade deadline has passed.

I was thinking about this, as my blood was boiling with rage about the Bears, again, and I am really thinking the Eberflus hire was just ridiculously bad. Too early to say? How much rope do we give this asshole?

You have an aging D in the 3-4, limping past Fangio's glory days of a good defense. You have an offense that is pure garbage. So you fire Nagy - correct move. Then who are you going to hire? The offense is a shambles of gadget bullshit, the players are not fit to a scheme, so the scheme must be changed. Do you hire an offensive minded coach that can start shaping this to his vision? Of course not. Do you hire a defensive minded coach that can utilize the players you have that are all designed for the 3-4? No, no. You hire a "head coach" who is known for his 4-3 tampa 2 bullshit, and give the OC reigns to Aaron Rodgers fucking QB coach.

So now we have spent all our time ripping out players from the 3-4 (Quinn, Mack, Roquan, JJ at at some point) and NOT acquiring the CORNERSTONE fucking pieces to run the 4-3 (like, you know, that all important 3-tech). All the while we are ALSO trying turn over the entire offense to fit whatever the fuck scheme this is that Getsy wants to run, because we ALSO don't have the pieces to make THIS scheme work.

It just seems so fucking braindead. It's a complete tear down, and then when you build the new house, you want to make sure it has a really bitchin' roof on stilts, and we'll worry about that foundation thing later, and then you find out the roof doesn't look that good so need to tweak that some more. It's asinine.

I mean, this fuck has captained the Bears to the worst record through this many games of ANY BEARS COACH EVER. Think about that. I thought HITS was all about intensity, no loafs, instead you see assholes fucking around the field, missing tackles like they're allergic.

I still have the might on Poles, ever so barely (DJ Moore is a baller, Wright, the jury is out on several others), but I am OUT on Eberflus. Fuck this asshole. Poles may have put Velus Jones on the roster, Getsy and Eberflus put him on the field.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong (he won't), but really it's just this entire idea that we are throwing out everything, it's the worst case of "not invented here" syndrome. JJ, see ya, remember when Jenkins was on the shit list? These are the talented players from the previous regime. Put your fucking ego aside and recognize talent, and even more, MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THAT TALENT. THAT'S WHAT A GOOD COACH DOES.

I was really trying not to rant, but once you get started it's hard to stop.

I like Montez Sweat the player. He's been consistent at getting in the backfield and is the best talent now on the roster at the position, albeit playing next to 3 stud level other linemen (mostly 2 because Young cant stay on the field), so you wonder when the other 3 guys are blocked what's this guy going to do? Another benefit, he played 3-4 edge in college under Todd Grantham at Mississippi State, so if Flus gets fired, he's got the flexibility in transition.

But even with the positives, I hate this trade. Poles overpaid, and now a mid-30s, possibly early 40s pick as Ev mentioned first is going to DC, and not a player on the roster because there's a crazy amount of holes on this roster. Furthermore, you've inherited another contract up at the end of the year, and he's not the only impact player (I'll get to Jaylon in a sec) up in need of a contract at the end of the year, and you only have 1 franchise tag.

It also tells me Eberflus isn't going anywhere. The team's still playing for him and they did just get better. Will they in another 3-4 weeks?

Kind of moot at this point, because acquiring Sweat lets you know Poles doesn't like any of the top edge rushers in college right now. If true, I don't agree with that assessment, I like Laitu Luatu from UCLA. The best 2-way edge in the draft IMO, watched a few games, and when he's in--he's halved the field for the opposing OC, because he's pretty damned disciplined. Oregon State beat them in a shootout and they wouldn't run at the RDE, they attacked the LDE most every run play. He's twitchy.

He'll look for a mid-late round project when to replace Ngokue and Greene when their 1 year deals are up.

That’s the hope. He’s not worth top 3 money. If Poles offered him top 10 and he turned it down, then adios.

If we see Sweat sign a 4 year deal in the next week or so I love this move. If not final nail in the coffin for Poles. You can’t make that trade unless you have agreed to an extension. He has system flexibility. Can play end or outside linebacker in 3-4. Weak draft class for pass rushers and this team needs talent on the d line bad.
