I think the fact that this game thread is so short says it all. The fan base is sick of this shit. I would like to enjoy watching Bears football again.
Dude we had almost no discussion over the past week even. I didn't even watch the past two weeks and wish I hadn't watched this one. What is there even to say? This team sucks. Coaching sucks, Offense sucks, Defense sucks, Ownership sucks, fucking Special Teams sucks (interference on a punt? What the fuck). Yeah, there are some pieces we could maybe turn into something, but not with this staff. The fact that Velus Jones has a roster spot says all you need to know.
This game had zero business being on SNF. I'm not sure there's anything Getsy can do at this point to make me say 'okay, this dude saved his job.' Foreman and Roschon got chunk runs, but 15 carries between the two for the whole game? Again, the OC does nothing to help his QB out, and he dials up 6 passes for his established WR1, but 10 for Cole Kmet. Dude takes a good gameplan that worked against Vegas and he abandoned running the ball so Bagent could sling the ball, and Bagent had a few good passes, should have had 2 TDs that the refs took away on the Mooney play he wasn't touched when he dove for the catch then got up and Velus Jones couldn't hold onto. Because Getsy was determined to show us we were all wrong and he was right, and he was partially right, the first pass of the game to Mooney I didn't think would happen/didn't think Bagent had the arm and it did/he did. But the chargers' pass defense caught on very quick. So quick they started jumping routes and should have had 4-5 INTs on the day. One game's tape was all that the 2nd worst pass defense in the league needed on Bagent, regardless of him getting rid of the ball so quickly on some plays. Tyson Bagent was a nice one week story and will make a wonderful trivia question in 20 years. But draft a QB. I don't want to hear how now he could be Gardner Minshew level back up. Draft one. Doesn't have to be 1 overall. Doesn't have to start week 1. The nonstop ass kissing by Tirico and Collinsworth made it worse, like Bears PR was actively standing next to them giving them their lines. Totally reset the OL after Darnell Wright and Teven Jenkins. That includes depth. Get Velus Jones off my television. Get him off the roster while you're at it. Defense--tackling was ass. Zero pressure (reset the DLine too), short of Demarcus Walker getting close once, which I'm sure flustered Justin Herbert for all of 1 second. I'm so glad we pay Tremaine Edmunds 20+ mil a year to make tackles from 8+ yard gains. You drafted all these nice DBs that look great chasing pass catchers/running backs--because the front 7 is atrocious. And you're probably going to need more because EJax and JJ are probably gone in a couple months. Poles better not make any trades unless its offloading guys for picks. If he gives up any assets for Chase Young like people on twitter/reddit are trying to will into existence he should be fired. Fire Flus. And Getsy. Fuck it, fire everyone.
Bagent was up and down. Should have had 2 more TDs, should have had 2 more INTs. But he's not the reason we lost. We lost yesterday because the defense couldn't tackle, they forgot Austin Ekeler plays football for the Chargers and because Getsy pulled a Nagy-I'm-the-smartest-guy-in-the-room routine. Cut Velus Jones. Fire everyone.
There are a lot of bad teams in the NFL right now. Can’t count on having the 1st pick. Need Fields to get his ass back on the Field and prove his worth one way or the other.
You know why there's a QB controversy really? Because it's the only thing the media can talk about isn't just different ways of repeating, "this team sucks". Bagent isn't the answer, but he also wasn't terrible, I think he'll be a fine backup and better than some retread that sucks anyway - let him develop there. Backups are backups for a reason. AND we get to see him again this weekend, because they have already confirmed Bagent is starting again. The kid is a D2 rookie, so anything out of him is a bonus and I don't mind it. I absolutely WOULD mind if they think he's the answer and didn't draft a QB. The first int was a horrible duck, but he also didn't take some sacks Justin would have, it is what it is. When you look at this game, I am far more bothered by how the charges just absolutely dismantled Eberflus' scheme. He plays zone, they dump off, he blitzes, they run a screen. It's like they were in the defensive huddle. Add to that the poor positioning and absolutely piss poor tackling and you get an ass beating like you saw on national TV. When did they first punt, something like the 4th quarter? It was Mel Tucker level bullshit. Fuck "flus". Eberfuck, Everlose, don't let the door hit you in the ass. Then on offense, Getsy is the easy scapegoat, but also just guys on the line getting absolutely pantsd, missed assignments, it was terrible. Again, like they are in the offensive huddle. Velus Jones, my god man. It still gets my blood pressure up, the most since fucking Barfey was on the team and I knew all fucking year he was going to cost us a big game. I think this one makes me more mad because it isn't like he muffed another punt or kickoff, this was a sure TD, and saying he dropped it really doesn't do it justice. Collinsworth said the Monty Python music, yeah, that or clown music was beyond appropriate, maybe the fucking price is right trombone. Then the refs? Who cares. Yeah, they lost the call on Mooney, not calling intentional grounding when he literally threw it nowhere, but honestly how can you even get upset? There were enough boneheaded mistakes that they deserved none of the benefit of the doubt. I would be upset if the game was even remotely close and this mattered, but at the end of the day, it doesn't. The refs didn't allow them to score on every drive. Then in two weeks we get a TNF game AGAIN? Who the fuck thought the Bears would be worth watching in Prime Time? And the worst part is that's a completely winnable game because it's against the actual worst team in the league, the Panthers, and us beating them would do us the *disservice* of potentially fucking up the #1 pick twice over. It would be such a Bears thing to do, to win that game. Fuck this team.
The tackling by the defense in that game was unreal. Just a straight up embarrassment. God knows Eberflush doesnt bring much to the table, but in a defense that emphasises rallying to the ball and tackling thats the best they can do? I mean if der flush can't hang his hat on something as simple as tackling then what can he point to? What one thing does this guy contribute to this team thats a major positive?? I mean slow reactions are the only reason the motherfucker didnt successfully deny his own team a TD with the challenge flag!! Please just let this guy go back to what he does best, being that friendly porter at the care home who's willing to listen to all the old person stories. Virginia thinks he's such a nice young man! The 4th & 1 fail from their own 29(which they were right to go for btw cos really who gives a fuck). Under center, straight hand-off, A gap run between turd C & RG, everybody blocks down. Play is made by Joey Bosa from LDE who blew through Kmets block. The reason Bosa is involved, making now basically a C gap tackle is cos Johnson had to bounce it. Johnson had to bounce it cos Lucas Patrick got blown back 2yards right off the snap. #76 & #58 meanwhile were doing their jobs and making a hole big enough to get the first. But when the Center cant play that tends to matter less. And that is how you bed-shit a 4th & 1. About a month ago in a game thread i said i was disappointed with TJ Edwards early on. Bww then gave a telling stat that Edwards led the team in both tackles and missed tackles. Yestrday's game was a clear continuation of this. Some awful whiffs, totally outmatched against Ekeler in the passing game, and yet, stuffed the stat sheet, leading the team in tackles, TFL's AND QB hits. This is why the box score will never tell the whole story. Speaking of the which i've got 2 things to say about Tyson Bagent: 1- That guy got mugged so bad in the box score its not real. First play of the game, there should be AT LEAST another 25yards of YAC, but Mooney had James 1 on 1 and was a move away from a like a 80yard TD. But none of that happened cos the officials are c_nts. Then we've got a 40yard TD pass that never was cos Velus is a c_nt. We've got a pick that hit Mooney in the chest, we've got awful drops from clowns like Blasingame(he was awful all round btw). Conservatively speaking there's enough for Bagent to have well over 300yards passing and 2-2 TD/INT. The 2nd pick was Mooney's fault but Bagent could've been picked at other times so thats a wash. And he can even throw it deep with some competence! The problem was NOT Bagent, plenty other things inc the dickhead OC calling over 40 dropbacks(!!) for his rook QB in his 2nd start. No, Bagent is not the future of this team and no none of the above happening means the Bears win this game. But if you arent impressed with him under the circumstances then you're being a hater. 2- If the Bears had an actual decent team and an actual settled starting QB, we would all love Bagent. He's everything you want in a backup QB. The problem comes when you're D can't stop jack shit and your running game is useless, meaning you end up trying to throw 40+ times. Get into that scenario and yes your rookie QB is gonna throw picks. But it wouldn't surprise me if Bagent goes on to have a long career in the NFL, backup QBs can go on and on. Look at Brian effing Hoyer. As i expected, Khalil Mack did virtually nothing yesterday. Even going up against a guy like Larry Borom. He had that TFL on the jet sweep early and that was it, that was Mack's day. The next 59mins of ball game he did not exist. Some guys really get up for facing a former team, they use it to fire them up and then issue a dildo of consequence. Khalil Mack is not one of those guys. Velus Jones had one of the more embarrassing TD drops i've ever seen in my life. A junior high schooler could track the ball better than that. I try not to blame the player cos i know they don't want to stink, i try to blame the GM for picking a guy who stinks. But sometimes players are such sharts that they cross the line. Stone Hands Bellamy crossed the line. So did Sheheen. And about 20 OLs. #12 has officially crossed that line. Put Velus Jones on a flight to Gaza!
Insanity. Pure fucking insanity. Gotta love when you wake up and there's fucking this. Now we have to examine the possibility of one of the high draft picks going to secondary AGAIN. Fire Poles. Fire everyone.
It would suck to have another hole to fill but I think JJ is overrated. He's a good enough CB but there have been plenty of times where his effort in man coverage has been bad. Not that you are saying this Patg (some idiots on Reddit are) but he's not elite by any stretch. 3 career INTs in 3 and a half years.
There's a lot going on here. The Bears find themselves in a difficult position. I'm not against them extending JJ at all, even tho i admit im not his biggest fan. The problem to me was always gonna come down to the valuation and that tweet itself hits this right on the head. "The player and team negotiated a new contract last week but couldn’t come close to a deal". The two sides aren't close to agreeing on JJ's valuation. Some of you guys in here have spoken up about keeping JJ, but none of you have stuck your neck out and said what you'd be prepared to pay him if it were your call. And thats my question. The Kmet deal tells us that Poles is prepared to open the wallet. Hell they overpaid Kmet but thats another matter. Point is #1CB is a more premium position than TE and if they're prepared to pay a TE then i believe they are legit trying to resign JJ in good faith. But you can't write a blank check. Me personally, i would've started at $10mil per for just inside top20 money. When that failed i would've gone up, with a target ceiling of $15mil per for just inside top10 money, with an absolute ceiling around $16-17mil depending on guarantees/structure etc. And i have to swallow real hard to say that cos i don't think JJ is worth top8-10 money. But im trying to balance what he does give you with the hole thats left to fill if he leaves. FWIW i think Poles has offered him top10 money. I think JJ wants top3 money. Top5 at the least. Thats taking it up to $19-20mil per. That is just an eye watering number for that player. For context, Spotrac, which has a market value/contract predictor tool, has JJ's value at $7.7mil per and a contract of 5-$44.25mil-$8.85mil aav. Personally i think that value is a little low, but i've seen them be right plenty in the past inc a bullseye on RRH's future FA contract i recall. Are we seeing the predicament now? Its very simple, either you overpay the player, potentially a massive overpay(how many times have we bitched about EJax's contract). Or you create a big whole that is gonna require a premium pick. This decision would be soooo much easier if either Gordon or Stevenson(or someone else) had shown you something, and im sure Poles has been praying they would. But truth is they haven't. The only other solution is to tell him he'll get tagged next year and create a seriously pissed off player. Personally i think he's gone, which i don't like. It had better be a 2nd round that comes the other way at a minimum.
I look at those numbers i've just written down and the situation and man im going back and forth on this one. $15mil feels like way more than he's worth but i can't believe you get it done for less than that. Really tough situation.
JJ is probably better than anything you're gonna find in free agency or the draft. You don't fill holes by opening new ones.
I get it but if you're not paying him...who are you paying? This is the cycle the Blackhawks got into. They don't want to pay their young guys that are due a deal so they trade them and reset. And then do it again. And again. That's how 2-3 year rebuilds become 10 year rebuilds.
Yeah, I'm of the same mind as BWW. How often would we get on Pace for creating a hole and then spending big draft capital to fix it, eliminating the ability to fill other holes with superior talent? Jaylon Johnson is an upper tier corner, and while this defense is absolute dogshit, it's not getting any better by removing your best defensive player. They did that last year with Roquan, and here we are. They're probably not paying a QB anything other than rookie money, over the next four years. Might as well pay a corner that can actually play, especially now that you've apparently got resources going into your defensive line (finally). Lord knows you're paying a couple LB's that aren't impacting the game right now. Do I think it's smart that Poles has spent major draft capital on the DB spots multiple years in a row? Fuck no. But I don't want to go losing DB's so that he has to spend even more resources on it, instead of where it belongs. It's not my money. And the Bears aren't paying anyone worthwhile right now, anyway.
