Browns at the bye: So far, Nick Chubb’s been the team’s best
    [IMG]

Run game coordinator/running backs coach Stump Mitchell didn’t agree with the premise of the question. In his expert opinion, there’s no “close” about Nick Chubb becoming an elite player.

“I think he’s an elite back now,” Mitchell said last week. “I think anything we ask of him, he gets it done extremely well. Nick comes out here every day that we have practice and he works extremely hard. He prepares like it’s gameday when he practices. The things that he’s doing in ballgames isn’t a surprise to anyone that sees him practice every day, it’s not a surprise to his teammates and it’s not a surprise to us as coaches.”

Chubb has been the Browns’ MVP through the bye week, an impressive feat for a second-year player taken in the second round on a team full of superstars. His production has matched his work ethic through the 2-4 start, and that’s saying something.

Chubb has won admirers throughout the organization for his professional approach to his job. He keeps his head down, doesn’t say much, then speaks volumes with his play.

His numbers make a strong case for Mitchell’s elite designation. Through six weeks Chubb was second in the league with 607 rushing yards, 11 behind Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey. His 5.3 yards a carry ranked second among league leaders, and the six rushing touchdowns tied for fourth.

Defensive end Myles Garrett, who shared the league lead with nine sacks through Week 6, is the only other Browns player performing at an elite level. The league rankings support the observation.

Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has incredible talent and has made some unbelievable catches but hasn’t had the production to match thus far, ranking 31st with 29 catches and 16th with 436 yards and scoring only one touchdown.

Chubb was at his best against Baltimore, going for 165 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the 40-25 win. He kept the hot hand in the losses to the 49ers and Seahawks, combining for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

The coaching staff realizes giving the ball to its best player is the right approach, especially with quarterback Baker Mayfield struggling.

“You don’t want to force things, you just want to take what the defense gives you,” quarterbacks coach Ryan Lindley said. “Especially with where we’re sitting right now, the way Nick Chubb’s playing, we can do that. He’s running the ball well, we’re blocking well up front. Let’s just extend drives and keep things rolling.”

Mitchell believes Chubb is as fast as any back in the league and has seen improvement since he rushed for 996 yards as a rookie.

“His ability and his patience now to press the point more, giving the defenders the impression that he’s going where he’s not going,” Mitchell said.

He doesn’t have to worry about Chubb getting a big head.

“I want to win games and I’m just doing what I can,” he said. “The O-line is doing a great job, too. They deserve most of the credit.”

NFL Trade Rumors: Browns Rejected Rams' Offer of Marcus Peters for Joel Bitonio
    [IMG]

The Los Angeles Rams traded Marcus Peters to the Baltimore Ravens for linebacker Kenny Young and a 2020 fifth-round pick this week, but that wasn't the first offer they made in an effort to move the veteran cornerback.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Rams first offered Peters to the Cleveland Browns for offensive lineman Joel Bitonio.

The Browns weren't interested in that trade or acquiring Peters, but they were willing to part with center Austin Corbett. So the Rams dealt a 2021 fifth-round pick to land Corbett, one of three major trades that culminated in them sending two first-round picks and a 2021 fourth-round selection to the Jacksonville Jaguars for cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

NFL fines Baker Mayfield for stating the obvious
    28
Browns quarterback one of three players fined by league for pointing out that the current state of officiating is poor.

    [IMG]Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was fined on Saturday by the NFL for pointing out something that should be obvious to everyone involved in the game.

Namely that the NFL has a major problem with its officiating.

Mayfield, along with Los Angeles Rams linebacker Clay Matthews and Detroit Lions defensive back Tracy Walker, were each fined $12,500 for their comments about the poor state of officiating in last week’s games.

Not only was #Browns QB Baker Mayfield fined $12,500 for his comments on officiating, #Rams LB Clay Matthews and #Lions DB Tracy Walker were also fined $12,500 for the same offense, I'm told. A message from the NFL amidst mounting criticism in locker rooms and elsewhere.

The NFL levied its fine against Mayfield after he pointed out that the officials erred when calling an illegal blindside block on wide receiver Jarvis Landry in the third quarter of Cleveland’s eventual loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Following the game, Mayfield had the audacity to question the call, according to The Beacon Journal:

“The refs are never an excuse. I’ll probably get fined for saying this, but it was pretty bad today. [Seahawks rookie safety Marquise Blair was] squared up with [Landry], running at him, he’s lowering his head into Jarvis. What’s [Landry] supposed to do? Avoid him? This isn’t bull fighting. I don’t know. It ticks me off.”

Rubbing a little more salt in the wound, the NFL did not fine Landry for the play, which would imply that the league agreed with Mayfield. After all, if it truly was an illegal block, why would the league not fine Landry?

#Browns WR Jarvis Landry was not fined for an illegal blindside block on #Seahawks safety Marquise Blair last week, one that QB Baker Mayfield said ticked him off.

The Landry play was not the only questionable penalty against the Browns last week. Safety Morgan Burnett was called for a horse-collar penalty in the fourth quarterback against Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. But, like Landry, the NFL opted not to fine Burnett, which lends credibility to the idea that the penalty was bogus to begin with.

Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi was not as lucky, as he was handed a fine of $10,527 for a roughing the passer penalty in the first quarter.

One of the Lions' players was fined for saying the same thing. You'd like to think with all these fines for trashing the refs the NFL could afford to buy competent referees.

Too late to change my vote from win to loss this Sunday?

These mf's get two weeks to prepare for the world champs and their solution to the struggles is "start a natural guard at the left tackle spot". My goodness... and you thought you saw a lot of Mayfield voiding clean pockets to his right before.

So much for a by week to work out O Line issues . All they have done is rearrange the deck chairs . Next years Draft ..O Line , TE , O line fix this mess of a line .

At least Dorsey didnt ship Bitonio off to the Rams . That would have been beyond STUPID!

There is a reason Robison is on his what 5th team since the Rams took him 9 th overall .

With that Pats defense Mayfield will be as nervous as a cat covering shit on a tile floor :sos:

TBH... I don't have a high opinion of Dorsey's ability to identify offensive line talent. He hasn't shown a successful track record there in his time as a GM. In fact, he probably has lost more offensive line talent than acquired as a full-time GM.

We need to address any line deficiencies in the offseason through free agency (or trades).
    Second overall. Ouch.

For what its worth: glad New England spanked he Jets.

At least they won't have a big chip on their shoulder.

Meanwhile back at camp Freddy: two weeks and all we get is a mystery over who's going to play left turnstile? Pathetic

  15. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

IMHO - there's no mystery. Robinson will be the LT.

Everything else is simply white noise out of Berea intended to give us the illusion that there's a fix to this problem in the works.

Watched a You Tube video from Qunicy (I know .. useless), but his take on "what the hell is wrong in Cleveland", was curious.

He was pointing out the strangeness of the players hurt or doghoused. The obvious ones: Greedy & Ward, both or which suffered leg injuries in "practice", and have mirrored one another in their recovery ( strange on its own ).

Then there's the magical disappearance of Avery, who was a true threat and contributor last season: why? Then the mysterious case of Hollywood Higgins. The guy has been "able to play" for 2 -3 weeks, but .......? Even starting Callaway over Higgins, which proved to be disasterous.

There's no believeable explanation for those guys.

Then he talks about the Monken effect. A buy who definitely likes the down the field passing game, as evidenced by his work in Tampa last year, that seems to ignore the check down options that let a QB to keep the chains moving.

After further review, 2 days later, it sounds as if McCray is getting the lions' share of reps with the 1's. Stay tuned.

Lym, I am not a fan of this change. Not because it's not reasonable, but because of the way they are doing it. You had 2 weeks to sort this out, and here we are a couple days from facing Belechek, and we still are "up in the air" on it?

He thought he had a bad ass D Line .. Joke on you asshole they still cant set a edge to stuff the run .

What will the diva OBJ Yap about next ? trade his ass before the deadline . I hated that trade will BOTH trades with the Giants when I read it . they have done nothing to change my mind .
