BROWNS @ SAINTS game 2 Thread

Hue Jackson's inability to take advantage of in game situations to produce positive results equates to playing bad situational football.

He could have lost those games by a different average but the point would remain the same.

No, you really didn't, and I would like to read your thoughts on why Hue Jackson is a good coach or the right coach to lead the Browns out of their current state.

I gave my biggest reason why I think he should be fired (the same one I've had for multiple seasons).

Now I'd like to read why I am wrong.

Well, he is the Pied Piper of NFL coaches.

Reason to keep Hue Jackson: Lincoln Riley won't be available until January.

I give Lyman credit for sticking to his guns because I know a lot of the guys on the Browns board are not fans of Hue.

I'm just honestly curious to see what kind of argument can be made to keep him as head coach other than continuity.

And I can't see Lincoln Riley coming to the NFL just yet. He has it too damn good at Oklahoma to leave.

Honestly, I'm not wild about cutting bait with Hue Jackson mid-season. I don't like or believe in Hue, but I also know that firing a coach mid-season is a recipe for disaster - and only happens once things have gotten pretty bleak to begin with.

As much as I like Haley and Williams as coordinators, I don't like the idea of them as interim head coaches because we've seen just what happens when a good-to-great coordinator takes on head coaching responsibilities.

Hue Jackson is/was an average coordinator and has been the NFL's worst head coach in history. There is no reason beyond continuity for keeping him, but that's the bed we've made and find ourselves in. Haslam should have kicked him to the curb when they moved on from Sashi as well. John Dorsey wasn't given the chance to hire his head coach last offseason but I'd say it's almost 100% chance he gets to this offseason.

I think one of life's biggest mysteries is how the hell Hue hung onto his job in the first place?? And I know people blame Sashi for that, but it was Hue Jackson telling us before last season started that Kizer was going to be a very good QB in this league. He has "all the tools and blah blah blah". After the 4-0 preseason, he spoke about team maturity and accountability and how much the Browns had grown from the previous year, and that they were ready to start winning football games. smh... It wasn't until about four games into the season, that he suddenly changed his tune to, "We can't win with this."....Then he begged Jimmy Haslam for help in the form of AJ McCarron for a 2nd round pick. A trade that was fortunately sabotaged by Sashi in one of his final and best moves as Browns GM....When Hue gets fired, I don't think he'll be missed. Just my take...

But he didn't lose by a different average. Quite the opposite actually. The 1-31 Browns would have folded like a cheap lawn chair when down to the Steelers by 21-7 in the 4th qtr. But they didn't.

Then against the Saints, they were done in by a fucking place kicker who missed two extra points and two field goals (8 points) and ended up losing by three points.

Reason not to keep Hue Jackson: Baker Mayfield.

If there's a chance we start the rookie (and I believe not only that there is, but it's coming soon), there's no way I want Jackson anywhere near him. He's not a "QB Whisperer"... he's a "QB Wrecker". People can scoff about the Cody Kesslers, Kevin Hogans, and DeShone Kizers of the world, sure... but Tyrod was a proven vet with a track record.

Three seasons with Buffalo (a team with significantly less talent than the Browns):

    774 of 1,236 (62.6%), 8,857 yards (7.2 YPA, 11.4 YPC), 51 TD (4.1%), 16 INT (1.5%), 92.5 QB rating

    Two games with Cleveland:

    37 of 70 (52.9%), 443 yards (6.3 YPA, 12.0 YPC), 2 TD (2.9%), 2 INT (2.9%), 70.1 QB rating

    DeShone Kizer (2017):

    225 of 476 (53.6%), 2,894 yards (6.1 YPA, 11.3 YPC), 11 TD (2.3%), 22 INT (4.6%), 60.5 QB rating

... outside of Kizer's atrocious decision-making, which led to all those INTs, where's the whispering?

Keeping Hue around for the sake of continuity is ridiculous IMO....If an employee is continually failing to meet expectations, what is the point in keeping them around?

I understand your point to a degree, but that still doesn't negate mine.

The Browns played poor situational football when they could have earned 'W's in both games that were within reach.

  13. TopDawg Legend

They threw a TD pass in the final minute that should have won the game, but the kicker choked...Then, with just 24 seconds remaining, they drove down the field and got in position to tie the game. That wasn't bad situational football in the clutch moments, it was quite the opposite...Now, if ya wanna talk about poor execution in the kicking game, I'm all ears...

I'm getting ready to leave the office now but when I get back I will go through the play-by-play to find the two situations that really stuck out to me regarding play calling and how it showed an obvious lack of awareness to the situation and what needed to be done in order to keep the advantage in the Browns favor.

I want to say that one series early in the 4th quarter when they had the lead ended with a 3 and out based off of some horrible play-calling that went completely against what the situation dictated but I want to be sure that I have it right before I cite it as an example.

I'm pretty sure I know what you are referencing, and I couldn't agree more. There were at least a half a dozen head scratching play calls, but couldn't that just as easily fall on the OC? I know the interception by Marcus Williams with about five minutes remaining was a crushing blow, but I'm putting that on Tyrod. Ya just can't try to squeeze that one in there in that situation, and he drilled Williams right between the numbers with it.

No, I don't believe you do understand my point. Your stance is based on the 1-31 Browns not the 2018 Browns. By all rights, given the roster he had, the 1-31 Browns should have been toe tagged and put on a slab in the morgue before either season even started. While I will admit Hue bit off more than he could chew by being both the HC and the OC, and that was definately a factor when it came to in game situational decisions, but he is no longer both. Hopefully you will agree that, at least, that part of the problem has been resolved as it is Todd Haley who is now calling the offensive plays.

So far this year, he's been done in by shitty special teams play. He received a gift by Pittsburgh's special teams in OT and then returned the favor by shitty special teams play later to walk away with a tie. I don't have the time or inclination to look it up but I suspect the Browns are close to (if not the worst) giving up the most kick off / punt return yards in the NFL. I am absolutely certain you are well aware of where on the roster special teams players come so that shouldn't be a surprise. Now, if you want to tell me that Hue should have been able to predict when Gonzales' yips would show up, I'll listen. I won't buy it but I'll listen.

Then you are making a case for a change at the OC, not HC. Hue Jackson has turned ALL PLAY CALLING DUTIES over to Todd Haley, the guy that most likely gets the interim job if they were to let Hue go.

Fact of the matter is, the players love Hue Jackson, you won't get one to tell Haslem a negative if he asks them. So you must find specific instances in practice or on game day to fill his folder with negatives. In the past he was checkered by them, thus the fire of Haley to take pressure off. I don't think you will find many issues in 2018 with his game day preparation. Even the 4th and 1, which I don't necessarily agree with, can absolutely be justified as a team looking to WIN a freaking game.

Now, if you ask me my opinion on overall evaluation...I absolutely disagree with Hue's handling of veteran days off. I don't think there is an issue with giving some out, but he hands them out like crazy. If there isn't a slight injury concern, they should be practicing..PERIOD.

That's what I've got for now..Not a big enough list for an immediate firing. If they don't turn this season into 7 wins, then we can have a discussion.

I thought this was debunked? Doesn't he retain "override" in certain situations?

As Head Coach he technically has the power to override a play call. In reality, however, it would probably require the use of a time out as he would need to hear what play is being called by Haley, apply that call to the situation, voice his veto and then tell Haley to call a different play all while the play clock is running down. And then he would get roasted for wasting a time out.

I haven't seen this... I'm sure as HC he has override, but has there been any indication at all that he has used that power at any time? I believe Haley is the type of person that would not even think twice about making it known if there was a call that the HC used his override power on.

(edit) Note to self...when taking a call at work, refresh before posting something you wrote earlier...Lym beat me to it.
