The thing that worries me the most is that Tyrod outside in bad weather was so much worse than Tyrod inside a dome...Winter is coming
Well we went toe to toe with two of the better teams in the NFL, and though we only have a tie to show for it, I think there is plenty to be encouraged about... The good thing is, our defense has played about as well as we could have ever hoped, especially considering the struggles on offense and special teams. They continue to put pressure on the opposing QB, and create turnovers. I'm really liking what I see from the Browns on that side of the ball... The sucky thing is, because our kicker choked, now we get to listen to all the talking heads this week (once again) going on about how the Browns just don't know how to win. My god I hate that...I suppose there is some truth in it, but if Gonzalez makes a kick, we don't have to hear it. smh... We will get our first win Thursday night...I expect that defense to harass Darnold all night, and if they can do that, he will turn it over. I'm hoping the Browns surprise me and announce Baker as the starter for Thursday...We need a QB that can put teams away. Step on their throat when ya got em down. Tyrod never has that mentality. I think we can still win Thursday night if we go with Tyrod, but it'll surely be ugly...All Tyrod games are ugly.
FFS!! Can we please wait a few weeks before calling for an UNPROVEN rookie quarterback!?!? (Sorry. Couldn't help myself.)
I will be SHOCKED if Baker is the starter on Thursday. Short week will not be the time they introduce a rookie. However, they could get him ready to play and who knows, if things are status quo with Tyrod, this could be the week a change is made at half time. It takes the starter pressure off of him, while giving him the Adrenalin rush to get through the 2nd half. Then he would have 10 days to prepare for his first start in Los Angelos against a pretty bad Raiders team. Since they got rid of Mack, that defense isn't doing much to harass opposing QBs. They have 1 INT and 2 sacks in 2 games...only 14 passes defensed in that time. That's against a good Rams team and a middle of the road Broncos team, both losses. Then two challenging games at home against the Ravens and Chargers. I would start Tyrod and have a very short leash, maybe even plan to pull him at half time unless he is just playing lights out. In other words, script my drive coming out of the half for Baker Mayfield, if Tyrod is still in there, it's because he is playing well enough to not need a scripted drive.
If the Browns truly have faith in Tyrod, why not run a play to the sideline in the final 8 seconds and see if we can make a more manageable FG attempt for our shaky kicker?? 52 yards is asking a lot when the guy has already shanked two extra points, right? We are playing "not to lose", which almost always gets ya beat in this league. I get the sense with the way the Browns are calling plays late in games that they don't fully trust Taylor...Then ya see how inconsistent Tyrod is in the passing game and it's easy to understand why... Make the switch to #6....
Per Jarvis Landry, post game, that TD play was going to him. Tyrod over-threw it and Callaway was able to somehow separate and get the finger-tip catch. Take that away from him and he's 21 of 29 for 199 yards, 1 INT, and three sacks (76.7 QB rating).
My son's birthday. Well, I predicted way back when, that Tyrod couldn't survive a two game losing streak. So that would be about right....
Now... I do believe a lot of that will come down to "Clueless" Hue. He could very well stubbornly stick by a struggling veteran because he still values veteran over rookie. Browns facing: Jets, @Raiders, Ravens. Browns should be able to turn 0-1-1 into 3-1-1 real quick. 1-3-1 (or 0-4-1) gets Hue and Tyrod out the door.
I think I outlined pretty clearly what I believe to be Hue's game day responsibilities. And, yes, as Head Coach he is ultimately responsible for the W/L record.) You deferred to your past opinion (which you are certainly entitled to). But, my question was specifically what in game decisions has Hue made THIS YEAR that would warrant his removal as Head Coach of the Browns?
That mentality is gonna get him fired. He's now what, 1-33-1? Nobody needs W's more than Hue, and stubbornly sticking to Tyrod is a huge mistake IMO.
You want to make an argument on specifics that neither you nor I would be privy to unless we had a headset on and heard the conversations between Jackson and his coordinators first hand. We could discuss going for it on 4th or the decisions leading up to the field goal attempts but again, neither of us has first hand knowledge on how those decisions were made and by who. I won't make a case for firing Hue based on information that I can't confirm and I won't argue that case against someone that cannot confirm the opposing point. I will however discuss this first part - - I think the #1 responsibility of a head coach is having his coordinators and his roster prepared to execute in the different situations that arise on game day. Situational football doesn't just apply to the abnormal but probably is even more important in the normal. Making sure that your coordinators understand what it is you want to do in any given situation, taking charge in those situations if needed and adjusting your thought process when needed is the biggest responsibility for a head coach and it's a more important role than being a team motivator or delegating work and game planning to subordinates. It's why Bill Belichick will likely go down as the greatest head coach to walk the sidelines. The Browns are unprepared and inept when the situation dictates that they play mistake free football and when the play calling should be at it's best it takes a turn for the worse (both sides of the ball), even with a new offensive coordinator, and that falls directly on Hue's shoulders. Jackson has not shown the ability to make in game adjustments, halftime adjustments or second game (divisional) adjustments in order to rectify mistakes and overcome deficiencies while exploiting weaknesses in his opponents. He's not alone in being shitty with situational football. The 3 other coaches in the AFC North are pretty lousy at it as well, but Jackson stands out as one of the worst in the league because at the end of the day he consistently, either directly or indirectly (through inaction), puts his team in situations that make the odds of them succeeding worse instead of better.
My point falls directly on the head coaches shoulders and the Browns under Hue Jackson have not shown the ability to play good situational football. I can confirm that the Browns play horrible situational football because the Browns play horrible situational football. It's the most important aspect of coaching (IMO) and he fails horribly at it.
Only a fool would argue that the Browns have played good situational football during that 1-31 stretch. My point and question remains . . . Specifically what has Hue fucked up THIS YEAR (under the current coaching staff configuration) to warrant his firing?
The fact that Cleveland has managed to continue to play poor situational football this season shows a continuation of Jackson's presence will only render the same results.
Okay. I concede. I guess losing (or not winning) by an average of 1 1/2 points per game against two Super Bowl contending teams equates to not being able to play situational football.
@Lyman Can you make an argument for Hue remaining the head coach that doesn't involve needing stability at the position?
