I think bad drafting is a symptom and not the problem. Too much gambling betting on teenagers is going to result is some crazy hits and misses, for even the best gm. I think the drafting philosophy (player types, who to listen to, etc), asset management, and developmental pipeline are the most important things to manage.
The 2007 draft was bad, but the 2006 draft was unreal, given the number of picks.
The 2008 draft was good, hitting 2 definite NHL players.
    2009 was bad
2010 landed Spooner and stopgaps, far from a disaster
I think it's too early for some of the picks.
Had they hit on many other picks at the blueline, the likelihood of landing a player worth 2 mid firsts like Krug drops dramatically,

Boston has only had more than 6 picks ONCE in the lockout era.

I think the problem is bigger than which teenager to target. I also think that bigger problem will be easier to fix compared some of the effects that resulted in disappointing drafts.

Asset management (huge broad subject) is a bigger problem to me than the drafting since they were a perennial playoff team.

Sorry, I wasn't counting the 2015 draft with a ton of picks, including my favorite first round since Calgary went off the board for Jankowski.

good points. some GMs better than others but its more than just picking the right kid, its bringing him up and putting him in the right position to succeed.

2006 was a great draft for the Bruins. Not sure that you can call that one Chiarelli's because technically he was still an employee of the Sens even though he had already been hired in Boston. Also acquired Tuukka at that draft too.
Other than the Seguin, Hamilton, and Pastrnak picks Chiarelli's drafting w/ the Bruins was downright putrid. Maybe some of his later classes will shut me up when they mature but the way it looks now isn't all that promising.
I hadn't even realized how few picks PC's crew made.

I hear you on the reach picks, makes me cringe.
This pick looks good so far though. Of course basing such conversations off of CHL stats can be difficult. What I do know about Senyshyn is that he's pretty big, extremely fast, and put home 45 goals in 66 games for Sault Ste. Marie. I like him better than Debrusk anyway.
In hindsight I wish they took Thomas Chabot (Zboril's D-partner in St John), Kyle Connor, and Barzal. we'll see. Actually in hindsight I wish they figured out how to land Hanifin!

I do not think Sweeney struck out based on what he wanted to accomplish. He whiffed because he could not execute the plan. He does not need hindsight; he lacked the foresight needed to pull this off.

I thought on draft-day 2015 that he was trying to get Marner and a top-D, (perhaps more realistically than Hanifin, I thought that might be Werenski). In any case, he came out smelling bad in the asset column. But, I maintain that's myopic and that Boston can still be better off for his maneuvering in the long run. They have three middle-first round prospects from one of the best draft classes ever, (obvious speculation), and they have extra picks this year.

If he can parlay some of this prodigious wealth of young assets into a starting D and a couple more role players, then I think they'll be set for a return to contention. Their pipeline should still be in enviable shape also, and that may help them contend for many years.

If being the operative word. they've already wasted 1 year.

I thought Werenski was a target too. Wish he could've been had.

Yeah, he has not demonstrated that he's much better at running a team than a fantasy team owner.

I think this offseason will be monumental for Boston. If he figures out what prevented him from executing his plan* last year and does something about it this time around then I believe Boston will be in great shape. If not then I think Boston will trend sideways like the hockey team from Philadelphia for quite some time.

(* I persist in granting the benefit of the doubt that he had a plan. Alternatively, he might just be a big fucking idiot. I think 2016 will be the year we find out.)

yes, well said. the honeymoon is over and this is your team Sweeney.

p.s. you suck Sweeney. I've been saying that since the 80s and he's given me no reason to stop.

The Bruins have signed defenceman Kevan Miller to a four-year contract extension.

    I think its a $10M deal.

    K. Miller + McQuaid + $500k = Tyler Seguin

  12. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

not only is it the assets and term that they're giving Kevan Miller, its the minutes/opportunity that is not being given to younger D w/ higher upside. Morrow has his moments and Id like to give him 1 more year, C. Miller already has me sold and should be in the lineup every game. Last year would've been a good year to play him a ton and let him take his lumps.

Looks like its gonna be the same D- core as last year?????please remind me, whats the definition of insanity?

  13. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I would add "precedent" between assets and term.

The conference call notes were funny.
Miller said it came to fruition pretty quickly- that implies Sweeney just bent over to obscene demands and terrible precedent quickly.

Sweeney said that he would get a higher AAV on the market- so why did you keep him all of last year?

Let's just assume details are missing or unknown circumstances triggered some of thise.
YOU STILL DON'T HANDLE A PRESSER OR CONF CALL LIKE THAT!!

Seabass putting his own team to the the PR flames even if they did everything right (if it was the right move, which is unlikely)...very disturbing.

  14. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    1. N Kevin Lowe
    2. N. doing the same thing over again expecting different results.

Let's look at Sweeney's "significant" contracts so far:

Jimmy "scratch em" Hayes 3 for 2.3 AAV
Matt Beleskey 5 for 3.8 AAV
Adam McQuaid 4 for 2.75 AAV
Kevan Miller 4 for 2.5 AAV

11.35 AAV to a group that isn't going to win with any more than 1 of those 4 in a top 4 top 9 position on the ice...Kick his ass Seabass!!

played wiffle ball today, one handed so we could hold our beer w/ the other of course, w/ an NHL scout. Words from his mouth, "Bruins are so fucked. The moves make no sense and there is no direction. Every NHL GM is hoping they get a call on draft day and the area code is 617".
    so thats nice.

Getting the kid from Denver to sign a year early was shrewd, or lucky.

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

The good news for Boston is that there seems to be a consensus that they're fucked.
It's worse when some see hope, so you have that going for ya...which is nice.

Sweeney has to unload every decent depth player just to reset the fucked precedent set on Miller, Beleskey, and McQuaid.

On the bright side, at least he didn't give Khoklachev 3 x 3 or something. Might be better to lose him for nothing.

feel like they owe it to Bergeron and Tuukka to just set them free.

Boston should blow it up except for Joannie and Bergeron.
Don completely sodomized himself giving out so many overpriced extensions to marginal depth players. He needs to bridge the young guys and let the vets expire imo.
