He was an UFA coming over from Sweden and probably saw the Bruins defensive structure and TT on his way out the door as an opportunity. Perfect timing and place for Svedberg to get his feet wet in N. America. So he came over the pond a couple years ago and immediately tore up the AHL and won the goalie of the year award. Last year he started but gave up starts to Subban and was decent form all accounts but not as good as the previous year. He signed a 1 yr/1 way deal this off season betting on himself. Im assuming that he'll price himself out of a backup role in Boston and hope to land somewhere where he'll have a shot at being a #1 next year moving forward.

You strike me as being pretty sharp for a fan of the hockey team from Boston.

Please indulge me and allow you to introduce you to a few ways things are handled around these parts:
    - First, and this is very important, always refer to that team as "the hockey team from Boston". Some have been known to wretch at the mention of that name when connected to Boston. Strangely, I can write UCLA Bruins without cringing.
    - Matty, despite his proclivity for that team, is one of the most widely respected posters here. You'll have fun getting to know the rest, and you may even learn something from time to time. Do not expect to learn much from me as I represent the Sabres on every level.
    - You are free to swear with impunity here since MnC marvelously transposes shit, fuck, asshole, pussy, etc. into innocuous letters.
    - Welcome aboard!

I go by Dan; I am a big Kilkenny Cats fan, (All-Ireland Hurling Champions for the umpteenth time!). I'm working on thwarting their best-laid plans by spelling out some cuss word in acronym form.

I'm a Cornell Big Red fan as well as the Bills, but the Sabres - and anything hockey - are what I care about more.

as Bruins fans we don't need to hold that against him.

the Bruins seem to have picks and decent prospects. i don't think Buffalo wants anymore non-1st round picks or any non-elite prospects. factor in the non-history of trading between the 2 clubs and you'll find my opinion on that.

Seemed pretty innocent from Chara's perspective, he left after this hit-

a little weird w/ his left knee.
this will open up opportunities for other D to either shit their pants or make a lasting impression moving forward. Looking directly at you Joe Morrow.

I guess thats the only positive side. They get to look at others and see if they can step-up. Cant fill the shoes of the giant tho. Even tho he's down in scoring, he's a important piece for the Broonz do deal with out of the lineup. Will be strange to watch a B's game and not see him there for a bit.

Especially because of your second thought, I agree that this trade is unlikely. Obviously, Tim Murray has a history with the Sens, and I know that Stewart is the type of player they want. I do not know if their history will make it easier to work a deal, or if there's mutual-leeriness. You don't want one GM gloating about how he humped the other in a trade over Christmas dinner.

As for Buffalo's needs; well ... they could use some scoring. Seriously, the prospect pipeline is deep and wide, but other than Reinhart in a year or two, and the possibility that someone could surprise us to the upside, there's a lot of third-line type potential. There are too many C's, but obviously they can be kicked to the wings. I have to think that any prospect like Tuch would get their attention quickly. The Sabres should have four pretty decent lines in about three to four years. They have too many young d-men, but they do not have any goalies, (including the NHL roster) that are sure-things.

The hard part about this rebuild will be deciding which promising prospects to move. Figuring out the system for team-needs could also be challenging since I do not know if Nolan is considered the long term answer behind the bench. Any team will take first round picks, especially in 2015.

Buffalo can take bad contracts if there's not too much left on the term. Fortunately things look pretty good in Rochester so far, but their problem is too many good young prospects since they can never fit most of them in Buffalo.

I would not mind seeing a trade involving one or more of our prospects for an established younger player. Depending on the talent, they have picks that they can add to a package, and Buffalo can also take bad short-term contracts.

There's a big risk with this since you could potentially give up a prospect that haunts you for the next 15 years. Still, getting more established players on the roster would seem to provide the stability needed to work in prospects. With three firsts in 2015 it seems likely that they'll find at least one for first-line F to give the team needed star-power.

Consider that someone, (I forget who, but I could find it), has eight Sabres prospects listed in their top-100 ranking. Add three more firsts next year, and we start to see the paradox of Buffalo's problem.

(I realize that I am posting this on the hockey team from Boston's board so I may c&p it on the Sabres board too.)

can't fill his shoes is right Will.
so many things he does. on the PK in front of his net?.. it's almost like you're down 5 on 4.5 instead of down 5 on 4. Even on the PP in front of their net he's a monster, lead the club by a lot w/ 10 ppg last season. just his overall presence that the opposition is forced to deal with. he's so valuable. I'm interested in seeing just how valuable he is, this will be a good barometer.

bob mentioned in the ditch thread, and i think he's spot on w/ this, this should benefit the Bruins in the long run for this season. the goal is the Cup and not the President's. A 37 year old guy that just played in a ridiculous amount of games starting at the '13/14 lockout end, through to the longest summer in NHL history (and SC loss no less, must make for a shift summer), followed by a season in which is condensed and he captains the Slovaks at the Olympics in Russia and then a 2nd round exit. I gotta think the old guy could use a rest. a real kick in the balls to a team that is already had an underwhelming start of the season for sure though.

i mentioned Morrow earlier because this will be his 1st call up to the Bruins. w/ Miller out also they're really replacing 2 D.
Bartkowski was the #7 D and has filled in for Miller for a couple games now, this is a welcome opportunity for Bartkowski. Ive been real high on him in the past but he was very sloppy last year. Strong skating, good outlet skate/pass, even pretty good positioning. shitforbrains at the most inopportune times last year though. This might be his last real "tryout" for the Bruins for him. I like that he's part of the young good skating D and think of it as the Bruins way of adapting to a higher speed game moving forward. the F prospects are largely strong skaters also but thats a conversation for another day.
Joe Morrow is also a strong skater and supposed to be very good on the breakout and have strong O instincts. Heard he's a real dickface though and he's already been traded twice since being a 1st rounder in '11.
Then there's Zach Trotman, also called up today. a 7th rounder that was never really on most fan's/media's radars. He's a big kid that played at Lake Superior (LSSU also brought up around here recently I think?). PC must like him because this summer he was resigned to a 2 year deal where next year is a one-way. A great contract all around I thought went unnoticed at the time by most. Gave PC leverage w/ Boychuk or at least protect against the pending Boychuk departure. Also keeps Trotman as a rfa when it expires if he works out.

as does Chiarelli. I hadn't thought of that before. not sure if Murray and PC overlapped.

the only prospect the Bruins have of Tuch's value I think would be Pastrnak and Subban. As you mentioned, these GMs will be leery and I hope that PC doesn't deal Subban w/in the division for rental help. i doubt that he would though from seeing the lengths he went to in the Boychuk deal to ensure that Boychuk doesn't end up in any EC team **cough, cough, Detroit, cough, cough**

absolutely. can't be easy to lay out blueprints and slot future teams based on kids that may or may not be done growing.

and always welcome to Dan, the Sabres even tie in here to the conversation.
