I tried to get into GoT both on the page and the screen but it just didn’t interest me. Stranger Things is a very entertaining show I thoroughly enjoy but IDK that I’d classify it an all-time great. This last season of Better Call Saul is pushing it higher up the list than I might’ve thought before.
Some really good stuff I’ve consumed on HBO Max recently - Barry, Hacks, Watchmen, Righteous Gemstones, Winning Time. And I’m early in S3 of The Wire which is amazing and def deserving of mention on all time best shows list from what I’ve seen so far. The ending of Watchmen was a little disappointing or it could easily be an all-timer. Barry probably needs to be in the conversation but it’s so uniquely bizarre IDK where it fits. The others are more in the Strangers Things “fun to watch but not best show ever material” pile to me. Peaky Blinders was great for 4 seasons, the final two were ass.
HBO is like a God. I think one of my favourite series is Ozark which ran for 4 seasons. The storyline of Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) moving to the Ozarks with their 2 kids to launder money is very clever and gripping. Just like Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy I wish this show would never end. Has anyone watched Animal Kingdom? Ellen Barkin is absolutely brilliant in this show, which centres on a Southern California family, whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities.
I watch Ozark and watched the first 4 seasons of Animal Kingdom. I need to get a weekend and binge watch the 5th, so I can see the final season..
I started watching the 5th season of Animal Kingdom and ended up having nightmares all night. LOL It was a bit difficult figuring the season start out since it's been a while since the 4th season. Man, those men have a lot of repressed fury ... LOL
Great thread... My thoughts exactly. You beat me to it. If I could only pick one GOAT of shows, it would be GoT. Very entertaining. Definitely one of my favorite series. A few other all-time shows that would make my list; Breaking Bad, The Wire, Homeland, Sopranos, Family Guy
I watched the first 5 episodes of Ozark. Thought it was terrible. No idea how they milked another 39 episodes out of that absurd story.
Some of the hillbilly dialogue was a bit much, but the show was intense. I loved it. Bateman and Linney were fantastic. A couple other shows that were pretty good, Dexter and Ray Donovan...
Favorite sitcoms of all time: (Born in late 60's, so this list is kind of in order as I was growing up) All in The Family The Jeffersons Bob Newhart Mary Tyler Moore Happy Days Sanford & Son Threes Company Taxi* Cheers* Family Ties Cosby Show Night Court Seinfeld* Friends Frasier Coach The Office* Parks and Recreation New Girl Family Guy* Curb Your Enthusiasm Always Sunny * = Makes my top 5.
If you have Apple TV, I would HIGHLY recommend Ted Lasso. There are 2 seasons, with a 3rd coming out soon. It looked like it was going to be dumb, but turned out to be one of my favorite shows.
I actually watched the first 3 episodes because of the hype and quit watching for a long time. After a friend told me I have to watch it, I tried again, and you are right it gets a lot better after those first 2-3 episodes.
The only thing I can't stand about Ozark is Wendy. I don't condone violence against women but I really want to slap that broad so f'n bad. Ted Lasso is a friggin gem of a show. I've always liked Jason Sudeikis and the way he took that character from a series of joke commercials to a super lovable TV show character is pretty great. Mayor of Kingstown is really, really good for those that haven't discovered it yet. It's on Paramount.
Wendy's smugness is beyond irritating but I love the balance between Marty and her. You have to admire his restraint. LOL I really liked Julia Garner (Ruth) in the show but when I saw her in Inventing Anna her accent made me crazy. That would have been much more interesting series to watch if it wasn't for her terrible accent.
Well OK but I made it through 5 and I still don’t like it. There’s just no plausible suspension of disbelief way Marty shouldn’t be either in prison or dead by the end of the first episode. And yes Wendy is insufferable. As is the daughter. The only interesting/tolerable characters are the son, the old guy, and the girl who owns the motel Marty takes over. It’s hard to stick with a show where all the main characters are so easily hatable saddled with laughably stupid storylines. Sorry I don’t get the hype on Ozark. At all. Best thing I can say about Ozark is “at least it’s not Yellowstone.”
