Interesting interpretation. Not trying to disagree with you here, but gotta say i see nearly the exact opposite.

Realistically the only suspension Smith has to worry about here is if he gets a 3 game suspension for something during the play. He would have to do something seriously extreme to get that kinda suspension. For all the noise about Trevathon's hit on Adams.... that only got him 1 game. As far as i can tell, only Vontaze Burfict has ever had 3 games for that kinda thing and he is a headhunting POS. Again, realistically, Smith isn't gonna be involved in something so serious that he gets 3 games.

I look at those 3 scenarios and overall i think thats a win for Smith. In fact the 3 game suspension clause looks so meaningless that what else could it be other than a bone they threw Pace at the end, probably so everyone could save face. You guys know ive been one of Pace's biggest critics, but i supported the position he took with Smith/CAA over this. Have to say tho, it looks to me like it was he who caved, which is what i predicted.

Also, did anyone watch Smith's PC? How many times did he answer simple questions with "thats between my agent and Mr Pace"? 100? This guy had zero input in these negotiations, he sure as hell didn't tell CAA to pull the plug. He ceded all power to CAA and let them use him as a pawn to further their own wider objectives. And eventually, Pace caved.

He can't let it go, still trying to throw out bitchy little comments.

We're so in this dude's head and there's nothing he can do about it ha.

If your trying to say people have left the board cos of smacktalk, sorry, but thats bullshit.

People left the board partly cos the team stinks and has stunk for years cos its been so badly run. And also because they're lazy and can't be bothered posting. Sure keep coming back to lurk and be entertained by other people's efforts tho don't they.

Speaking of which, how often have you posted here in the last year main? Maybe lead by example and become a more regular contributor of positive posts rather than pointing the finger at other people.

If the 3 game suspension is such a meaningless clause how do you see that as a win for Smith? The NFL has said that there were 3 total plays last season that would have warranted an ejection and possible 1 game suspension. Big win for CAA there. Getting their client immunity for something that most likely will never happen. And if it did the Bears have already shown they wouldn’t void any money anyway.

And your ignoring the other clauses. If Smith can’t control himself and is seen as the aggressor in an on the field altercation outside of a play that receives even a one game suspension his money is fair game. It would take a 2 game suspension if he is not seen as the aggressor. The latter would never happen but the first happens all the time. And teams rarely go after a players guarantees for it. So again big win for CAA getting more meaningless clauses put in.

When it all comes down to it CAA was swinging for the fences in an attempt to get their client immunity for any and all on field behavior. They hit a single. Teams put voided money language in contracts for worse case scenario’s. You know this by how few times teams actually void any money even though they could if they wanted to.

From the time any rookie signs his first deal it’s all about that second contract. The life changing deal. What CAA did for Smith here is hold their client from working towards that contract for 29 days making it harder on him to be all he can as a player. And for what. Some language that prevents the Bears from doing something they wouldn’t do anyway. Big win for Smith.

Let's get back on point everyone. Please.

I look at it as a pretty fair deal on both sides. From my understanding the language can be very vauge in terms of what warrants the voiding of money. I posted an article in another thread that said there have been other contracts that left it as ''actions detrimental to the team". That could be anything if the Bears wanted it to be.

The contract defines what can void the contract. Smith feels better comfort in that unless he goes ape shit he will be good. The Burfect example isn't really good because a team isn't going to just cut bait to a top 10 pick unless it's some serious shit.

Reading back over my initial post where i called a win for Smith, i see i over-emphasized Smith in this. Really what i should've said to be more accurate was "Smith's Team". And by Smith's team i guess you could even say CAA mostly actually, because its highly likely that while on the surface they were both on the same team, Smith and CAA clearly didn't have all the same goals in this.

So your point about Smith is taken. Your sarcasm re CAA however is not, and your repeated use of it suggests you really don't understand at all what CAA's wider objectives were here. As you yourself demonstrated in multiple displays of the lowest form of wit, if these clauses where so minor then why go to so much time and trouble to get them in the first place?

There had to be another reason. My guess is that they only had one eye of Smith, the other was on the future. Between Smith and Bosa, CAA have plenty to point to in terms of the "we'll fight harder for you than anyone else" sales pitch. They also went head to head with Pace and know they got him to blink, twice probably, which is useful to know if there's a next time. So make no mistake, CAA have extracted plenty of value out of this. Partly at the Bears, and their own client's, expense.

Unlikely. If you've been in many proper negotiations you know pretty much all of the time no one gets everything they want. Thats why they call it negotiations. They were never gonna get everything, particularly after the Bears had already given out on the helmet thing. They wanted some extra concessions and they got them. In terms of Smith specifically they prob did hit about a single. In terms of wider goals tho this was a double for CAA.

I agree. I really don't think Smith was helped much at all in this episode. If he was a hothead who was always on the edge/had a rep for picking up PF's etc then this might've made more sense. But if anything the opposite is true of him. Which is what makes his willingness to go along with this disappointing and why i hold him partly responsible.

Smith is a young guy it should be remembered, and he's entering a different world. Nevertheless his priorities were all wrong. And surely in the final 2-3weeks when it was clear what the holdup was, he should've been putting his foot down.

His first mistake was a poor choice of agent. His second was not having the brains or the balls to see what was going on and stand up for himself.

I was thinking about what's been happening on all of our boards recently and as a reminder to everyone, Tim is trying to increase the membership here. It doesn't help the cause if we alienate each other. As far as trolls or people who are simply out to provoke ... have at them. But let's take care of each other in here. Please.

Babyfan, your Bears brethren are a little over the top when fans of other teams post here. Look at the Steelers board, you won’t see us using the f-word on anyone let alone every outside poster that comes and post.

You also don’t see any opposing fans stalking the Steelers board trying to drop idiotic one liners in order to simply generate a response.

Yet you do see a few opposing fans doing exactly that here. Granted, it’s the same few brainless idiots doing it consistently. But you get the point.
