Vikings kicker, Kai Forbath was 15 of 15 on field goals after replacing Blair Walsh but just 11 of 14 on extra points.

Adrian Peterson wants to retire someday with the Minnesota Vikings.

The future Hall of Famer stated as much Monday, telling reporters that his mind set is directed toward finding a way to make that happen.
"I would love to finish my career here with the Minnesota Vikings," Peterson said, via Twincities.com. "So that's where my mind is."

Obviously, that will start with money. Peterson's 2017 salary is hefty and non-guaranteed. He is expected to count $18 million against the salary cap, which is more than quarterback Sam Bradford. Coming off a season where he played just three games due to knee surgery and rushed for just 72 total yards, the Vikings would prefer not to pay that much, regardless of how talented Peterson is.

Counting him out altogether would be foolish.

"There's the reality that there comes a point in time where, yeah, the best thing to do is take a pay cut, and it might be in the best interest of the team, as well," Peterson said.

Having Peterson on the same wavelength as the team's accountants will be huge as the Vikings start their offseason. With one of the better head coaches in football and one of the NFL's stronger defenses, they will not be starting from ground zero. Peterson might not be the focal point he used to be, but we've seen running backs extend their careers and get smarter about how they run in recent years.

Because Peterson was in the conversation to play over the final weeks (he carried the ball six times in a Week 15 loss to the Colts but did not play against the Packers or Bears), it would be reasonable to expect that he has an offseason close to what he's used to.
What team wouldn't want a close-to-normal Adrian Peterson on their roster in 2017? (per NFL.com)

Vikings exec George Paton a favorite for 49ers' GM job

Packers executive Brian Gutekunst elimnated himself from the race for the 49ers' general manager job by signing a new deal to stay in Green Bay, leaving just Vikings executive George Paton and Cardinals executive Terry McDonough in the running for the position, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday.

Paton is expected to meet with the 49ers and soon-to-be head coach Kyle Shanahan next week, Rapoport reported on NFL Total Access. If the two sides find themselves to be a good fit, it's expected the Niners will offer Paton the job, Rapoport said.

Paton spent the last decade working with the Vikings, serving most recently as assistant general manager under Vikings GM Rick Spielman, who has held that title for six seasons. Spielman has built a young, relatively deep Vikings team that is anchored by a defense that was ferocious for much of the regular season. Paton's time with Spielman goes back to when the two worked together in Chicago and Miami more than a decade prior, and would offer a fresh, draft-focused take on a team in the Niners that has a few pieces but needs many, many more.

Vikings name Pat Shurmur offensive coordinator
Pat Shurmur's interim tag has been removed.

After replacing Norv Turner as the Vikings offensive coordinator when Turner resigned midseason, Minnesota has decided to keep Shurmur at the position on a permanent basis.

This is the third time that Shurmur has been an offensive coordinator for a Sam Bradford-quarterbacked team, as he had earlier stints in St. Louis and Philadelphia.

The Vikings also announced that Kennedy Polamalu is the new running backs coach while Kevin Stefanski will move to quarterbacks coach.

why can't they find some one better he didn't seem to be all that IMO,the Vikings i'm afraid they will never be an elite football team as long Tricky Ricky is the GM,why the Wilfs won't fire his azz is beyond me...i'm so pissed he just wasted AP and couldn't he see that PONDER wasn't the one and he did NOTHING I MEAN NOTHING to help the O-line this past season we need a football GM, i'm so tired

  13. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

That's the problem... as long as the Wilf's are content, the Vikings wont move Spielman.

This next season should be the ultimate test for Spielmans team... they are running out of options and Rick is skating on thin ice. Too many bad contracts, no wiggle room under the cap and what to do with AP is going to be tough for him to work with.

Cordarrelle Patterson: I could 'take my talents elsewhere'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The sudden retirement of Norv Turner and promotion of Pat Shurmur to Vikings offensive coordinator last season -- a role that Shurmur gained permanently this week -- finally had former first-round pick Cordarrelle Patterson at ease.
While he thought Turner was doing a fine job, Patterson said that Shurmur came to him personally and assured Patterson that he would see more targets. Turner left the club on Nov. 2. On Nov. 6, Patterson had a season-high eight targets. In his final nine games he had 46 targets after just 24 over the first seven.

"Pat told me 'Let's get you the ball'" Patterson told me Wednesday. "And I saw a lot of that happening for me. It was good for me. I love when I get the ball in my hands and Pat likes to get the ball to me. No matter who you are, he's trying to spread the ball around. He's not going to focus on one or two guys."

He added: "I felt like Pat was more of a player's coach, he kind of got it. He was trying to do some different things than Norv was doing."

As soon as Patterson found a groove, though, his contract expired. The former first-round pick is now a free agent and wants to make sure that whichever team signs him plans to actually use him.

"Of course, man. Two years I spent damn near on the sideline. That's never a good feeling for any player. No player wants to go through that," he said. "I need to know if I'm going to play or not. If not, I'll take my talents elsewhere."
To be clear, Patterson didn't sound like a bitter person. He talked glowingly about the people of Minnesota and how he's built a small family there -- even if there is an allure to free agency.

"It's kind of exciting," he said. "I've never been a free agent. It's just like coming out of college again. You never know what's going to happen. You never know where you're going to go. It's a lot of excitement to me. It'll feel good to lay around for a little bit and kick my feet up." (NFL.com)

Vikings' Spielman: We must address the offensive line

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday from the Senior Bowl, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman bluntly stated his offseason focus.

"Well, I think obviously, we have to address the offensive line," Spielman said. "But I think we have a lot of young pieces in place. We built a very strong nucleus and they are all right now at the prime of their career, we just have to address some of the needs, like every other team does."

Spielman tried to solve that problem last season, bringing in tackle Andre Smith and guard Alex Boone. He swung and missed.
"We had planned going into the season with Matt Kalil, Alex Boone, Joe Berger at center, and Mike Harris -- who didn't play for us (this year due to injury) -- at right guard and Andre Smith," he said. "We thought we were going to have a pretty good offensive line. No excuses but we lost a lot of those guys and we lost them very early in the season. So, it's difficult to plug offensive linemen in, especially when you are getting down into your third and fourth offensive linemen. But we have to do a better job making sure that we have the quality depth not only at that position but every position."

None of the five offensive linemen Spielman mentioned above played 16 games in 2016. Harris went on NFI in July and did not?play a down. Kalil went on IR with a hip injury after Week 2. Andre Smith appeared in four games. Berger and Boone each missed two games at points throughout the season.

With a cap situation?in the bottom 20 percent in the NFL, fixing the offensive line through free agency would be tricky. The lack of a first-round pick exacerbates the predicament.

Minnesota's money problems are why despite Spielman again insisting he wants Adrian Peterson to remain a Viking, it won't be for $18 million, if at all. Kalil is set to be a free agent, and after several terrible, injury-riddled seasons both sides might be ready for the former first-round pick to move on.

It's clear the offensive line will be Spielman's priority in the coming months. Stating the obvious and fixing the problem are two very different tasks. (NFL.com)

Mark Wilf: We have ?tough analysis? to do on Adrian?Peterson

Peterson?s future in Minnesota is going to come down to whether or not he and the team can agree on a revised salary. General Manager Rick Spielman will be the team?s point man in those talks, but ownership will also have a voice in the process.

Speaking from the Super Bowl in Houston, Vikings co-owner and team president Mark Wilf called Peterson ?such an important part of our organization? and said that it will be a ?tough analysis? to figure out?if it makes sense for him to remain in the orgainzation.
?It?s a combination of a business decision and a football decision, and we?re going to work through that here in the next few weeks,? Wilf said, via the Pioneer Press. ?It?s his 11th season coming up. Just to be around that kind of a great player has been a wonderful thing for us.?

The analysis might be a little easier for the Vikings if Peterson hadn?t missed 13 games with injuries and provided lackluster results in the three games he did play, but both team and player will have to play the hands they?ve been dealt as they try to sort things out over the next month.
