    Vikings cut wideout Mike Wallace

Wide receiver Mike Wallace's journey from underappreciated third-round pick in Pittsburgh to highly paid free-agent experiment in Miami to silent partner in Minnesota nearly came full circle on Tuesday.

The team officially announced Wallace's release after trading a seventh-round pick for the wideout almost one year ago. Wallace finished his only season in Minnesota with 39 catches for 473 yards and two touchdowns.

Does you believe this makes WR a priority in the first 3 rounds?

  3. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

I would think so. I still think they go defense first and then they have to add a WR. Maybe they try their hand at an FA out there. They freed up $11.5M on the Wallace deal.

Vikings to add guard Alex Boone

The Minnesota Vikings added some help in front of Teddy Bridgewater.

Former San Francisco 49ers guard Alex Boone has agreed to terms to join Minnesota, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the deal.

    ESPN first reported the news.

Boone was Around The NFL's No. 2 guard on the market after Kelechi Osemele, who will sign a massive deal with the Oakland Raiders.

The Vikings sorely needed to upgrade their interior blocking. A plus pass blocker, Boone should help keep Bridgewater upright in 2016 after the quarterback was sacked 44 times and pressured on 46.9 percent of drop backs in 2015. Boone allowed five quarterback hits on 463 pass blocking snaps last season, per Pro Football Focus.

The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed sixth-year defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis.

The former New York Jets third-round pick joined the Vikings mid-way through the 2015-16 campaign, and had eight tackles and one quarterback pressure in nine games with Minnesota last season.

A native of Lake Worth, Florida, Ellis has recorded 74 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in 56 career NFL games.

Kenrick originally enrolled at South Carolina University, before transfering to Hampton following his freshman season, where he became a two-time All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honoree.

Phil Loadholt takes pay cut to stay in Minnesota until 2017

Loadholt only restructured his current contract that runs through 2016. He did not sign an extension. Under his original deal, the seven-year veteran was set to make $6 million with an additional $2 million available in incentives. The new contract saves the Vikings up to $5 million in cap space. If Loadholt suffers a season-ending injury before the 2016 regular season begins, he will make less than one million dollars.

Vikings finalize deals with LG Alex Boone, LB Emmanuel Lamur

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The Minnesota Vikings have signed left guard Alex Boone and linebacker Emmanuel Lamur, finalizing contracts they agreed to on a busy first day of free agency.

The Vikings announced Thursday that the deals with Boone and Lamur were done, after both players passed their physical exams.

Boone, who has a four-year contract with a maximum value of $26.8 million and $10 million guaranteed, moved from San Francisco practice squad member in 2009 to starter on the 49ers' Super Bowl team in 2012. Boone has started 59 games over the last four seasons.

Lamur left Cincinnati after four years there. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was his defensive coordinator with the Bengals during his first two seasons.

Vikings announce signing of safety Michael Griffin

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? The Minnesota Vikings have signed free agent safety Michael Griffin.

The Vikings made the announcement Monday after agreeing to terms with the 10-year veteran last week. Griffin comes to the Vikings from Tennessee, where he spent the first nine seasons of his career.

Griffin has made two Pro Bowls. Vikings defensive backs coach Jerry Gray coached Griffin with the Titans from 2011-13. Griffin is expected to compete with Andrew Sendejo for the starting spot opposite standout Harrison Smith.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has been looking for a veteran playmaker on the back end of his defense to allow him to free up Smith to play closer to the line of scrimmage.

Vikings bring back Ellison, Sherels, Newman, Trattou

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? The Minnesota Vikings have kept four more of their own free agents, retaining tight end Rhett Ellison, cornerback Terence Newman, defensive end Justin Trattou and cornerback Marcus Sherels on Tuesday.

Newman agreed to a one-year contract worth as much as $3 million, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced it.

Newman provided the Vikings some valuable production, experience and leadership in his first season with the team, snagging three of his 40 career interceptions and starting all 17 games, including the playoffs. The 37-year-old led the Vikings with 14 passes defended and allowed them to bring first-round draft pick Trae Waynes along slowly. Newman even started one game at safety when injuries left them thin at that position, and coach Mike Zimmer has long been appreciative of his ability and presence after supervising him with three different teams.

The Vikings confirmed the signings of Ellison and Sherels, two unheralded players who've held meaningful roles for much of this decade.

Ellison is coming off surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, an injury that kept him out of Minnesota's playoff game. The fourth-round draft pick out of USC in 2012, who has become a key run blocker and a reliable receiver on the limited opportunities he's had to catch the ball, is not quite halfway through the six-month recovery.

Ellison, who also lines up as a fullback at times, has 458 yards and three touchdowns receiving over four years. He signed a one-year contract with a maximum value of $2.25 million.

One of the NFL's best long-shot stories, Sherels will enter his seventh season in the league after sticking with the Vikings out of a tryout camp following a rather unremarkable college career at Minnesota. The Rochester native made the Vikings' practice squad in 2010 and was elevated to the active roster for the final game of his rookie year. Since then, he has played in all 81 games and compiled a franchise-record three punt returns for touchdowns. He's third in Vikings history with an average of 10.2 yards per punt return.

Sherels, who has largely been a backup cornerback, also plays on the special teams coverage units. He signed a two-year deal worth as much as $4 million, including $1.5 million guaranteed.

Trattou also agreed to a one-year contract, according to another person with direct knowledge of his deal who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced it. Trattou has been a backup since first signing with the Vikings in 2013.

The Vikings have brought back 10 of their own players who were eligible to become free agents, with remaining interest in retaining linebacker Chad Greenway and running back Matt Asiata. They've signed four free agents from other teams, including left guard Alex Boone and strong safety Michael Griffin, and have pursued right tackle Andre Smith, who visited Minnesota on Sunday and Monday before departing without a contract.
