Well, Darnold and McCarthy were pretty solid for their first game action... plenty of work to be done though. McCarthy showed up nicely in my opinion, I was pleasantly surprised by some of his passes, especially the touch he could put on the ball. He played smart in the pocket when it collapsed also. He, of coursed rushed a few things under pressure, but hell, thats what rookies do... I would have shit my pants, but he looked pretty poised for the most part. McCarthy was able to convert some key 3rd n longs, but he also floundered a bit in the redzone early on.

Didnt see a whole lot from Dallas Turner, but I did see a real good outside move from him to hit O'Connell from behind and drop him for the sack. Good speed and quick moves on his part. The secondary per usual needs to get it right.

Nailor and Jackson looked real good receiving the ball, especially Nailor early on. Nailor was targeted early and often and made some plays. Jackso had the ability to get himself wide open several times and did very well after the catch. Jackson had 100 receiving yards and I believe Nailor had 60+ or something.

In the backfield, Chandler struggled early but popped a couple doozies later and Nwangwu was very impressive returning kicks and running from the backfield, so it looks to me Aaron Jones will have 2 solid backups behind him, but im judging from just 1 game in.

Will Reichard was the end of the game hero with a FG. Hopefully the Vikings get consistent kicks from him as you well know, you never know what the hell can happen when the Vikings kick.

A cool thing I noticed was an increase in team speed on both sides of the ball, but their achilleas-heel is still the defensive secondary. Maybe if they sign Stephon Gilmore, the experience will help if nothing else it adds depth.

Thats about all I got for now. I wasnt glued to the game like a regular season game, but it was a cool way to start. I was actually a bit surprised as to how well a lot of the Vikings played, especially the 2nd/3rd stringers and UDFA's on defense. The offensive line must have did ok because I didnt cuss too much when the were in pass protection.

Vikings HC discusses letting J.J. McCarthy develop as a backup

ESPN's Kevin Seifert noted that the Minnesota Vikings approached their preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders this past Saturday as if veteran quarterback Sam Darnold "is their likely Week 1 starter" ahead of rookie J.J. McCarthy.

Before McCarthy tossed touchdown passes of 45 and 33 yards in the 24-23 win over the Raiders, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell sounded comfortable with letting the first-year pro develop as Darnold's backup through the entire 2024 season if such a scenario played out.

"There is no one way," O’Connell recently told NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "The process and the development plan need to be applied with detail and great urgency to individualize an approach. You have to be willing to evaluate step by step, day by day, while also preaching and building a plan where guys never say to themselves, 'I didn’t get a little better today. I didn’t get more comfortable today.' How that’s going is, both Sam and J.J. are further along than I probably thought they would be at this point."

Seifert mentioned as recently as last week that any "external rush to get McCarthy into the starting role has simply not been felt" by individuals within the Vikings such as O’Connell.

That take was offered before pockets of Minnesota fans understandably became excited about what could be to come for the organization after the 10th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft completed 11-of-17 passes for 188 yards with two scores and an interception against the Raiders. McCarthy also rushed for 18 yards on two attempts in his preseason debut.

"That’s purely the comfort of making sure that 10 other guys in that huddle can break the huddle and run the play and be held accountable for the details of their job because I can do the baseline of mine long before you have a ball leave your hands or make a check or an audible," O’Connell said about starting either Darnold or McCarthy for the Week 1 game at the New York Giants on Sept. 8. "That’s where I’ve seen the growth and development with J.J. He is getting better at that. Sam’s comfort of the system is growing on a minute-to-minute basis."

As of Monday morning, neither DraftKings Sportsbook nor FanDuel Sportsbook had the Vikings' situation listed regarding Week 1 starting quarterback odds. That suggested those outlets assume Darnold already has the job locked up.

"Being a game manager is a pretty powerful thing if you’re as talented as these guys are," O’Connell added about Darnold and McCarthy.

That's all well and good, but some Vikings supporters will want more than a so-called game manager in the lineup if Darnold posts a record of 2-3 or worse ahead of Minnesota's Week 6 bye.

Then again, perhaps McCarthy could play well enough in this coming Saturday's exhibition matchup at the Cleveland Browns to change O’Connell's mind about a quarterback competition that seems to be over before the halfway point of August arrives.

Now I hear Jordan Addison in practice against the Browns went down and to be carted off later they said it was just an ankle or was it a high ankle injury yeah right,if you went down had to be carted off first thing that comes to my mind is that hated ACL looks like injury bug has found a home in Minnesota, but the injury bug has been running wild in NFL camps

To replace McCarthy on the roster, the Vikings have signed former Panthers third-round pick Matt Corral.

The Ole Miss product entered the league in 2022 but never played in a regular-season game. Carolina waived him in late August of last year and the Patriots claimed him — but Corral was then placed on the exempt/left squad list in early September. He was waived and was set to sign with New England’s practice squad, but never ended up returning to the team.

Corral then went to the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions and appeared in four games with three starts for the club. He recorded a 3-0 record as a starter, completing 58 percent of his total throws for 494 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Ìf true it would give the Vikings mature leadership at QB something they haven't had in a while, there's a difference between Tom Brady ( winner ) and Capt Kirk ( not so much )...but his stats are amazing
