The delay is a headscratcher. The delay is possibly being caused by the uncertainty of Cousins getting resigned or hitting Free Agency, so I have gleaned from various reports. Jefferson has made it clear he wants Cousins to come back, but he also said it doesnt really matter who throws the ball up, but he certainly, and has stated, he loves Cousins, so maybe during/after the combine, Cousins and the Vikings brass will have made up their SLOW-PROCEESING minds and get Jefferson his deserving deal written on paper based on what happens to Kirk.

I still agree with you tho, the delay is extremely hard to tolerate and the longer it takes I believe Jefferson and company will decide there will be no more patients or Mr. Nice Guy. Jefferson and his agent have been very reasonable and patient, some say this is a normal process, but the Vikings are still blowing this by milking the preverbal cow.

Vikings gain $13.4 million in salary cap space

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the salary cap is going up $30 million to $255.4 million, an increase of nearly 14%. Rapoport states that it is due to money deferred by the players during the COVID pandemic and the massive increase in media rights deals.

Where does that leave the Minnesota Vikings? Well, it’s quite simple. They now gain about $13.4 million in salary cap space from what Over The Cap had projected, which was $242 million. As of now, they will be projected to have around $37,868,132 in cap space. That number could fluctuate a little bit here or there, but it makes thing significantly easier to maneuver in free agency.

Looking and examining the Vikings roster left me shaking my head. The have a ton of Free Agents to consider. Besides the obvious Cousins, the defense needs real work. Hunter, Hicks and Wonnum all UFA's. If they dont get these signings done, basically the core of the Vikings is ripped out.

Iven Pace Jr is a blessing right now and Asamoah rotating in is real promising, but if the 3 I mentioned walk, the Vikings are in trouble.

    Its always something.

Vikings 'believe' Kirk Cousins wants to stay in Minnesota; trading Justin Jefferson never 'crossed' team's mind

The Vikings want to keep Cousins in Minnesota and lock down star receiver Justin Jefferson for the long haul. Adofo-Mensa noted that the sides were close to a contract last offseason for the wideout.

"We had a lot of great dialogue last offseason," he said. "I think people forget, deals rarely happen after three years, and there is a reason for that. Two years left. There is uncertainty that somebody's got to hold -- either the club's got to hold, or the player's got to hold. There's new money, old money. How do you look at contracts? Those are very hard conversations to have. So a lot of them don't get done. We got unbelievably close."

Jefferson is in line to leapfrog Tyreek Hill's $30 million per year contract and could surpass Nick Bosa's $34 million per year as the highest-paid non-QB. The Vikings have no qualms about admitting Jefferson is worth a shipload of cash.

"We've said it, and we'll continue to say it: We think he's the best wide receiver in the league and should be compensated as such," Adofo-Mensa said. "We think he's one of the best non-quarterbacks in the league and should be compensated as such. We'll continue to have those dialogues and those conversations."

Adofo-Mensa dismissed the idea that the Vikings could do what the club did with Stefon Diggs and trade Jefferson rather than pay his hefty price tag.

"That's not something that's once crossed my mind," the GM said on Tuesday. "You got a blue(chip) player, a blue(chip) person. You try to keep as many of those as you can."

The Vikings want to keep Jefferson and Cousins together for as long as possible.

Adofo-Mensa said the club keeps Jefferson apprised of their talks with Cousins.

"I think any great player, especially a great wide receiver, should want to have a quarterback, accurate, who is going to throw him the football when he's open -- and he gets open better than anyone in the league," he said. "So that is something that's important. When I first met Justin, he said, 'Kwes, I just want to put wins on the board.' At some point, though, it's got to be a trust in how we're building this going forward to set us up in a sustained window to win for a long time. We've got to earn their trust, of course, but that's a conversation you've got to have. You've got to treat players like partners; you've got to bring them in and have those conversations with them. And that's something we do with Justin."

The GM's comments on Jefferson trusting the organization are important to any conversation about Cousins' future. It indicates that while the team wants to keep Cousins in Minnesota, there is a line they won't cross that could compromise the club's long-term vision.

In the coming weeks, we'll find out whether Cousins will remain in Minnesota or whether Jefferson will have to trust the front office to find a suitable replacement.

Vikings hire Josh McCown as quarterbacks coach

The Vikings don’t know if Kirk Cousins will be back as their starting quarterback for the 2024 season, but they do know who their starter’s position coach will be.

Josh McCown has been hired as the new quarterbacks coach in Minnesota. The Vikings also announced that Chris O’Hara has been hired as their pass game specialist.

McCown opened last season as the Panthers’ quarterbacks coach, but was fired along with head coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start to the season. That was McCown’s first NFL coaching job, although he interviewed for the Texans head coaching job on multiple occasions before landing the role on Reich’s staff.

O’Hara was the Vikings’ quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons. He joined head coach Kevin O’Connell and offensive coordinator Wes Phillips in making the move from the Rams to Minnesota before the 2022 season.

New Vikings quarterback coach Josh McCown was Maye's high school coach in the Charlotte area just five years ago. Maybe the hiring of McCown is because the Vikings are going to trade up and snag Maye in the Draft... Id like that to happen.

    Mattison is getting the axe.

After one season leading the Vikings' rushing attack, Alexander Mattison will be moving on from Minnesota.

The Vikings have informed Mattison that they are releasing him, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

Having held the second-string role for the first four years of his career, Mattison had the opportunity to take on his first consistent starting role in 2023 after the release of Dalvin Cook. He re-signed with Minnesota on a two-year deal at the time, but will be hitting the open market again one year later after finding himself unable to capitalize on the starting opportunity.

Mattison finished with 700 rushing yards on 180 carries, averaging just 3.9 yards per attempt and recording zero touchdowns on the year, putting him among the least productive of the starting RBs on the year.

He did not record 100-plus rushing yards in any game and, in fact, had under 45 yards in 11 of his 16 appearances, including in the final three games of the season, by which point he had lost the starting role.

With Mattison's struggles to kickstart the run game, the Vikings ranked No. 29 in the league in rushing offense, accumulating just 1,553 yards and a league-low seven rushing TDs (three by QB Joshua Dobbs), putting a strain on the passing game with its revolving door of QBs.

With Mattison on his way out, that leaves Ty Chandler as the only returning back who had any significant yardage last year, recording 102 carries and 461 yards in 17 games, starting the final four contests in place of Mattison. Every other remaining back on the roster had a combined 20 rushing yards.

Out of 187 games played he had 136 sacks, 171 tackles for a loss, while forcing 32 fumbles and 228 QB hits... yep he's a slacker, lol. He'll get in, hopefully before passing away.

Im not in a hurry to get rid of Cousins IF they can keep Hunter and sign a mega-contract for Jefferson and IF they target the future QB in the draft. In a perfect world thats cool in my opinion. If Cousins bails Monday or so, I am already having nightmares on whom they might sign as a bridge while they work on the future. Minnesota has to be very sly this draft and nail it or purple purgatory continues... and Im getting too old for this shit years ago.
