Justin Jeffersons accomplishes 1,000 yard season in less than 10 games

Against the Detroit Lions, Justin Jefferson surpassed 1,000 yards receiving in just his 10th game of the season, becoming just the third receiver to do. Wes Chandler and Jim Burton were the only two others to accomplish the feat.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that Jefferson has been that successful. He’s the best receiver in the National Football League. It also shouldn’t be much of a surprise that he’s doing this with backup quarterbacks. Nick Mullens has been firing the ball to him down the field and trusting that he can make the play.

Surpassing 1,000 yards means that Jefferson will have broken 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons.

Justin Jefferson: Everything with contract will happen the way it needs to happen

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson came into the 2023 season with hopes of reaching 2,000 receiving yards, but he cut that goal in half after missing seven games with a hamstring injury.

Jefferson reached the revised goal with 12 catches for 192 yards in Sunday’s season-ending loss to the Vikings. He shrugged off the accomplishment by asking “what does it matter if I’m getting my individual stats if we’re not winning” while talking to reporters about the close to a “tough” year.

This offseason will be focused on Jefferson’s future in Minnesota because he did not sign an extension before the season and is now heading into the final year of his rookie deal. He called that “a conversation for the front office to really speak about” while saying he thinks things will fall into place.

“For me, I’ll just continue to play my ball and do everything that I can for us to get the win,” Jefferson said, via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. “I feel like with my play and all of that, everything is going to happen the way it needs to happen. I will just continue to be myself and go out on that field and give it my all.”

Jefferson is currently set to make $19.7 million in 2024 under the terms of the fifth-year option that the Vikings picked up last year.

Kirk Cousins plans to “relinquish” to his upcoming free agency

The 2023 season has ended. The contract between the Vikings and quarterback Kirk Cousins will be expiring. And there’s nothing the Vikings can do to keep Cousins from becoming an unrestricted free agent — other than re-signing him before he does.

In an end-of-season press conference with reporters, Cousins talked about his decidedly undecided future. He was asked to identify “the most important thing” going forward.

“What a great question,” Cousins said. “What a great question. I think it ultimately is about winning football games. And so that will be the most important thing, winning football games. With that, no one thing is in a vacuum. Usually, you win football games because there are some other factors that are really important to me that are going to have to be there to be able to win football games. So it ultimately all ties together. The factors work together. But I certainly believe we can do that here.”

Beyond those “factors” is the contract. He’ll hit the open market, barring a new deal. He has made a ton of money. How much more will he want? What’s the balance between getting paid and having enough cash and cap space left to put a good team around him?

Cousins said he’ll defer to the decisions the team makes about the situation, and he’ll rely on his agent.

“God has blessed me financially beyond my wildest dreams, so at this stage of my career, the dollars are really not what it’s about,” Cousins said.

He nevertheless recalled something a coach told him eight or nine years ago: “It’s not about the dollars, but it is about what the dollars represent.”

In other words, the money conveys a level of respect and status within the team. If the starting quarterback isn’t paid at a certain level, it becomes harder for him to lead the team the way he needs to lead the team.

Cousins said he plans to “relinquish” to the circumstances, as he did after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon. And he doesn’t plan to chase other teams.

“I’m not gonna try to sell myself, if you will,” Cousins said. “I kind of like to let people make their own decisions, because I do think that the league needs quarterbacks. And if you’re trying to talk yourself out of a quarterback, I can’t help you much.”

He can help plenty of teams. He has shown this year how he can help the Vikings, and how the Vikings — with Kevin O’Connell as head coach — can help him.

Six days before Cousins suffered his injury, he had perhaps the finest game of his career. If he had stayed healthy, the Vikings would be getting ready for a playoff game. They possibly would be preparing to make a deep run into the postseason.

Could that happen for Cousins and the Vikings next year? Could it happen if Cousins jumps to a new team? Those are decisions that need to be made, and they’ll be made within the next couple of months.

Kwesi-Adofo-Mensah the hard choices are coming all of this depends on you and Capt Kirk will he take a team friendly deal so the Vikings can draft for Offensive line help and Defensive line help are a must or will he go for the big bucks he can get from the Vikings so they can continue to be so so you know mediocre

I've been listening to different podcast of the Vikings this is starting look like real shit show you got going on Kwesi-Adofo-Mensah your drafts have sucked IMO Lewis Cine looks like a bust when the Vikings could have gotten Jamson Williamson but you seemed more interested XFL Players, KOC how come you never gave DeWayne McBride a shot to see what he has cause the run game was painful to watch

I find it strange and yet quite funny how Brian Flores hasnt had a contract offer from any one. Maybe he should stick to football and not run his mouth. Law suits against the NFL kinda made a rough place for him. Anyone that goes against Goodell at this time is a work in futility, he runs the damn show. I personally think Flores is a nut job... but if he continues to get the Vikings D playing well, ill look away.

    Had a rant. Excuse me.

That’s a good reason not to hire Flores as a HC. The league would probably have the refs hit his team hard with enforcing the rules because he went against them.

Im all for it. Fields is mobile and has workable potentials that are still un-tapped in my opinion. He'd have a decent o-line and a couple real decent WR's with a few TE's that proved last season they can catch and be a threat out of the backfield.

Im still not convinced he's going to get dealt from Chicago unless they can get an overpayment for him, but I am a Fields fan, always have been.

    Interesting idea, Baddman.
