Justin Jefferson says his situation 'different' than others, extension up to Vikings Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson is almost certain to receive one of the biggest contracts ever given out to a non-quarterback at some point in the future. He just doesn't seem to be sweating when that will happen. That doesn't mean Jefferson, 24, is in the dark about his value. But as the 2023 NFL season is set to begin, Jefferson isn't taking an aggressive approach to the state of his contract negotiations. "Of course I would want a contract to be done," Jefferson told reporters on Thursday, per ESPN. "But at the end of the day, it is all up to (the Vikings) and what the ownership wants to do with that." Everything that Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has said publicly is unquestionably supportive of Jefferson and that the team intends to get a deal done with Jefferson eventually. Some players prefer not to have their contract negotiations bleed over into the regular season, viewing it as a distraction from their work. But when asked if that was an issue for him personally, Jefferson volleyed the onus back to the Vikings: "It's up to them." The fourth-year pro has gotten off to one of the greatest starts in league history at his position through a player's third season, averaging a mind-blowing 96.5 receiving yards over his first 50 career games. His 4,825 receiving yards are more than any player has ever totaled through their first three seasons in the history of the league, too. Last season, Jefferson led the NFL in receptions (128) and receiving yards (1,809) and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. "I'm in a different situation," Jefferson said on Thursday. "I've done something that no one has ever done in the history of the game. So my situation is a little bit different than everyone else's. "Of course, I'm going into my fourth year, trying to talk about contract (stuff) two years early. There's so many different parts that go in towards it. That's why I leave it up to my agent and just keep my mindset on the field." The Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill currently has the highest average salary per year at wide receiver, at $30 million per year. It's not difficult to imagine Jefferson blowing past that. The 2020 first-round pick has a guaranteed salary of just under $2.4 million this season and is set to be paid $19.7 million in 2024 under his fifth-year option, which the Vikings picked up last summer. Minnesota also potentially could franchise tag Jefferson in 2025 if a deal is not reached by then. But there could be a lot more flexibility next offseason if the Vikings allow quarterback Kirk Cousins to become a free agent. Cousins has helped Jefferson reach a high peak early in his career, but the Vikings might not be able to pay both market value. Jefferson understands the nature of the business, but he told reporters that he'd love to keep working with the only starting quarterback he's really known in the NFL. "It's a part of the business. It's kind of really hard to say," Jefferson said. "Of course I would love for Kirk to continue to be my quarterback. ... But again, I don't control that. That's up to the team and up to Kirk. But of course I would love to have Kirk and continue my journey with Kirk." The Vikings kick off their 2023 season on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. NFL.com
Justin is a good man... I just hope the Vikings brain trust doesn't take advantage of Jeffersons good will.
There going blow it this should have been done looks like there Will be unnecessary distraction going into the season,if Nick Bosa got paid 170 Million for 5yrs and a 12.5 Million dollar signing bonus if this guy got paid the mega bucks Kwesi-Adofo-Mensah better sign Justin Jefferson The mega bucks what the hell is the hang up I'm so nervous this will end with bad feelings
Alexander Mattison named NFLPA Community MVP for Week 1 Vikings running back Alexander Mattison is hoping for on-field success in his new role as the starter in Minnesota and his off-field efforts have received some recognition ahead of the season opener. The NFL Players Association announced on Friday that Mattison has been named their first Community MVP of the 2023 season. Mattison is being recognized for hosting a back-to-school event through his I AM GIFTED foundation. In conjunction with the Salvation Army, Mattison’s foundation provided more than 250 underserved kids in Minnesota with new backpacks, books, school supplies, shirts, shoes, socks, and wristbands as well as free haircuts. Mattison also held a similar event in his hometown of San Bernadino, California and spoke to the kids about how he was once in a similar situation to theirs. “I encourage mental health practices because I have personally experienced how hard life realistically is,” Mattison said. “I hope that after an I AM GIFTED experience, no matter what adversity they might face, these kids can look in the mirror and say, ‘I AM GIFTED’ and truly believe it.” The NFLPA will make a $10,000 contribution to Mattison’s foundation or the charity of his choice. He will also be eligible for the Alan Page Award at the end of the season along with all of the other weekly MVPs. PFT _________ ________________ Thats great to hear about Mattison. It means a lot to me when I hear about the well-to-do's giving back to their communities and others, especially the children.
Report: Vikings, Justin Jefferson to resume talks after season The Vikings might soon have yet another problem at receiver. And they might eventually have to trade away another great one. For the fourth time in less than 20 years. From Randy Moss to Percy Harvin to Stefon Diggs, the relationship with the team soured and the Vikings moved on. While the relationship with 2022 offensive player of the year Justin Jefferson has not yet soured, it’s far from being as sweet as it should be. Via multiple reports, the Vikings and Jefferson won’t be finalizing a contract extension before Sunday’s Week 1 game against the Buccaneers. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the plan is to revisit the negotiations after the season. As PFT has noted on several occasions, the holdup likely traces to Minnesota’s guarantee structure. The team refuses to vest full guarantees a year early (with, for example, 2025 payments becoming fully guaranteed in March 2024). An exception was made for quarterback Kirk Cousins. Jefferson reasonably believes an exception should be made for him. That’s possibly why he said this on Thursday: “I’m in a different situation. I’ve done something that no one has ever done in the history of the game. So my situation is a little bit different than everyone else’s.” Indeed it is. He has earned a contract that would pay him much more than the slotted $2.4 million he’s due to make this year. Frankly, it’s an embarrassment that he’s only getting $2.4 million for 2023, given what he has done — and given what he likely will do again. At some point, Jefferson (who currently seems to be very good natured and willing to go along with the situation) might change his mind and ask to be traded to a team that will pay him what he’s worth. It happened with three great receivers in 2022: Devante Adams, Tyreek Hill, and A.J. Brown. It could happen with Jefferson in 2024. The Vikings clearly aren’t sweating that possibility. As I’ve said before, the failure to extend Jefferson could be the first step in a scenario that entails trading him to a team holding a draft pick high enough to deliver a franchise quarterback for the Vikings. Yes, Jefferson is great. So was Moss, Harvin, and Diggs. And the Vikings got to a grand total of no Super Bowls with those other players on the team. A franchise quarterback means more to an NFL organization than a stellar receiver. And if rookie receiver Jordan Addison turns out to be a great receiver, too, the Vikings can keep him and trade Jefferson in a way that positions them to get the true, year-in-and-year-out franchise quarterback they haven’t had since they traded with the Giants to bring Fran Tarkenton back to Minnesota in the 1970s. That could be the plan. If it isn’t, it could become the reality — if/when Jefferson decides he’s had enough of his skills and abilities not being properly recognized and compensated. NBC
