Report: “Real possibility” Vikings move on from Adam Thielen in coming days A month ago, Adam Thielen acknowledged that the Vikings might be moving on from him entering 2023 given his large cap hit. As the new league year approaches, that’s looking a little more likely. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports on Thursday that there’s a “real possibility” the Vikings will “part ways” with Thielen in the coming days. Minnesota restructured Thielen’s contract last year. He’s under contract for two more seasons, but he’s set to count nearly $20 million against the cap in 2023. If the Vikings were to cut Thielen, it’s they could use a post-June 1 designation to spread out the cap hit over the next few seasons. If they do, they’d save $13.4 million against the cap in 2023 with $6.6 million in dead money. If they don’t use a post-June 1 designation, Minnesota would save $6.4 million against the cap with $13.6 million in dead money. By making it known that they’re willing to move on from Thielen now, the Vikings could also find a trade partner before the new league year begins. Thielen turns 33 in August. He caught 70 passes for 716 yards with six touchdowns in 2022. Thielen entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2013 and became an offensive contributor in 2014 but he didn’t break out until 2016 with a 69-catch, 967-yard season. He’s No. 4 on the franchise’s all-time list with 6,682 receiving yards, No. 3 with 534 receptions, and No. 3 with 55 touchdown receptions. PFT
Report: Za’Darius Smith asks Vikings for release Edge rusher Za'Darius Smith signed a three-year deal with the Vikings last year, but he’s reportedly hoping to move on after just one season in Minnesota. Smith tweeted a thank you message “to Skol Nation for an amazing season & experience” in 2022, which looked like it might be a response to the Vikings releasing him in order to clear cap space. Releasing Smith would free up over $12.1 million. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, however, Smith’s release is just wishful thinking at this point. Rapoport reports that Smith told the team he wants to be released and that the Vikings have rebuffed that request for the time being. Smith initially agreed to a deal with the Ravens last year, but wound up signing with the Vikings after backing out of that agreement. He had 44 tackles, 10 sacks, 24 quarterback hits, and a forced fumble in 16 starts. The Vikings have already released linebacker Eric Kendricks, wide receiver Adam Thielen could be headed out the door, and other veterans could be on their way out, so things will look different in Minnesota whether the Vikings give Smith what they want or not. Looks like the bloody axe is out who's next? it's a matter of days before Thielen gets his walking papers I think this teàm will look completely different
Vikings to release Adam Thielen on Friday The Vikings are moving on from longtime receiver Adam Thielen. Thielen will be released on Friday, according to multiple reports. There was some thought that Thielen could restructure his deal to remain with Minnesota in 2023. He was slated to carry a $20 million cap hit. But instead, Thielen will have a clean break and become a free agent. Because he’s being released, Thielen will be eligible to sign with any team immediately instead of when the new league year begins next week. Thielen ends his time with the Vikings No. 4 on the franchise’s all-time list with 6,682 receiving yards, No. 3 with 534 receptions, and No. 3 with 55 touchdown receptions. If the Vikings release Thielen with a post-June 1 designation to spread out the cap hit, they’d save $13.4 million against the cap in 2023 with $6.6 million in dead money. PFT
The Vikings have elected to part ways with another player on Friday. Minnesota announced the club has waived cornerback Cameron Dantzler. A third-round pick in the 2020 draft, Dantzler appeared in 10 games with nine starts in 2022. He recorded 50 tackles with three for loss, five passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Dantzler missed the practice week of Minnesota’s postseason game due to a personal matter and was inactive for the loss to the Giants. By letting Dantzler go, the Vikings will save $2.7 million against the salary cap. In three seasons, Dantzler has appeared in 35 games with 26 starts. He has three career interceptions for 17 passes defensed. YAHOO
Looks like the DC is changing things KOC is starting to shape the Vikings Offense very exciting can't wait to see the new look let's hope they strive to be elite GO VIKINGS
Well, as far as Safety goes, they have this group left if Smith is let go... Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson and Camryn Bynum. Not too deep, so they will need to address this. Im not sure who is on the practice squad.
Vikings make first move, agree to terms with TE Josh Oliver The Minnesota Vikings have made their first addition of free agency. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo, the Vikings have agreed to terms with tight end Josh Oliver on a three-year, $21 million deal with $10.75 millino guaranteed. Mostly used as a blocking tight end in Baltimore, Oliver doesn’t have a lot of production as a pass receiver. Last season for the Ravens was his best, with 14 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. In his four year career, Oliver has 26 receptions for 230 yards and two touchdowns. PFF graded him highly across the board. In 2022, Oliver had a grade of 72.3 overall with a run blocking grade of 73.9 and a pass blocking grade of 63.1. This move signals that the Vikings could be moving to more of a 12 personnel base and fullback C.J. Ham could be on the way out. If we really want to read the tea leaves, it could mean they are a ways away from an extension with T.J. Hockenson. Time will tell with both potential moves, but it certainly raises a lot of questions. VIKINKSWIRE
I sure hope this is NOT a TJ Hockenson remedy if there may be a problem signing TJ. It would be great to have the option of both TE's.
Report: Vikings restructure contract of LB Jordan Hicks The Minnesota Vikings entered Monday morning with around $7 million in cap space to clear. Per NFL insider Adam Caplan, the Vikings have restructured LB Jordan Hicks to keep him around for the final year of his contract. Terms of the restructure were not disclosed. With Hicks set to have a cap hit of $6.5 million on the final year of his deal, the restructure is likely to mean a pay cut instead of a true restructure where the Vikings would push money back. They have been unwilling to move money to 2024 with that being their priority. With a really deep linebacker class, it’s probably smart for Hicks to stay. He would get lost and likely make less than what the Vikings were going to give him. VIKINGSWIRE
I don't understand the Hicks restructure but they cut Eric Kendricks? and Patrick Peterson is gone to the Steelers nice pick up I think Mike Tomlin will get the best out of him.....Brian Flores and coaching staff must have something in mind or is this a complete rebuilding of the defense
Vikings signing former Saints DE Marcus Davenport to 1-year, $13M deal The Minnesota Vikings are landing one of the premium pass rushers on the open market. Minnesota is signing former New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport to a one-year deal worth $13 million, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported Monday. The No. 14 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Davenport is a mercurial talent who was slotted as the No. 17 free agent in Gregg Rosenthal's top 101 list. Davenport played a career-high 15 games last season for the Saints, but tallied just half a sack after racking up a career-high nine the season prior. Having made the majority of their offseason news by releasing mainstays such as wide receiver Adam Thielen and linebacker Eric Kendricks, the Vikings are adding some fresh talent into the mix. Nonetheless, Davenport's addition could spell a Vikings divorce with Za'Darius Smith, who's made it known he'd like to move on from the squad. A strong presence on the edge with the ability to be a game-breaker, Davenport will look to make a splash in Minnesota and potentially land a longer and more lucrative deal next season. NFL.com
Davenport was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, who traded up in the draft to acquire his services. He’s shown flashes in his time in New Orleans, including a nine-sack season in 2021, but recorded only half a sack last season after missing some time with a shoulder injury that placed him on injured reserve. Injuries have been a big part of Davenport’s career to this point, as he’s missed at least two games in all five of his NFL seasons to this point. He’s a very athletic player that could make an impact as an edge defender in Brian Flores’ defense. . .if he can stay healthy. We still don’t know for sure whether or not this means that the Vikings will grant Za’Darius Smith’s request or, for that matter, which other moves the Vikings are going to make to get under the salary cap by 3:00 PM Central time on Wednesday. But they’re taking a swing on a guy that’s never really fulfilled his potential in the hopes that they can unlock him in Minnesota. Welcome to Minnesota, Marcus Davenport! DAILYNORSEMAN
