Report: Vikings hiring Wes Phillips as offensive coordinator

We already knew the Vikings were hiring Rams passing game coordinator Wes Phillips. The only question was whether the job was for offensive coordinator or passing game coordinator.

Now comes word that Phillips will join Kevin O’Connell’s first staff as offensive coordinator, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.


Chargers receivers coach Chris Beatty and Rams running backs coach Thomas Brown were other candidates for the job.

Phillips joined the Rams as their tight ends coach in 2019 and added the passing game coordinator title in 2021. He spent the previous five seasons coaching tight ends with Washington and worked for the Cowboys from 2007-13. His father, Wade Phillips, was the head coach of the Cowboys from 2007 until his firing eight games into the 2010 season.

He just doesnt want a massive pay cut, so he's lobbying high to try and provide the leverage to get an extension and still make somewhere in the $40M area. Its a killer business, but i dont see a better QB option out there without a rebuild.

Kirk would probably be a fit somewhere, somehow if the Vikings ate some cash, but who could come in to Minnesota and possibly be better?

 

My problem with him is the lack of leadership I just don't think he can get the job done even with a much improved O-line which is a must for Capt Kirk he has no fire he just seems so Milk Toast to me!

 

But he threw 33 TD's with just 7 INT last season, lol. Kirk seems to be a love him, or hate him kinda guy. He is 36 now, i believe and that contract does more for people to hate him than his play on the field, in my opinion.

If he's traded, Im just afraid its rebuild time and i dont want to sit through that.

 

It's a messed up situation dammed if you do dammed if you don't what a mess Mike Zimmer left the Vikings in this is sad

 

Time to coach up Kellen Mond to see if he can cut it in the NFL as a back-up I'm just tired ready for a change want to see some exciting style of football

 

Report: Kirk Cousins had a hand in Kevin O’Connell hiring

Kirk Cousins was reportedly a busy man behind the scenes when Kevin O’Connell’s name came up as a potential head coaching hire for the Minnesota Vikings.

KFAN’s Paul Allen is reporting Cousins spent a great deal of time lobbying to the front office to hire his former quarterbacks coach from his time with the Washington Commanders. Allen used that tidbit of information as the basis for the argument that all of the supposed trade talks surrounding the Vikings 33-year-old quarterback are “fruitless.”

“Kirk put a lot of time into getting Kevin O’Connell hired and put a lot of time behind the scenes with those who hire,” said Allen, during an episode of Friday Feast! “Ok, so now there’s that. And O’Connell is glowing, to a certain extent, along with the new offensive coordinator [Wes Phillips], of Kirk. So, you lay those things out, right there.

“It would be a metaphorical 2×4 up your butt if they were to just trade him out of nowhere. ‘What’d you say here, what’d you mean here? What about that 25-minute conversation with the team president to get the guy hired?’ I mean, all of that plays into this, and that’s why I think [the trade talks] are fruitless.”

The one piece that seems to be missing in all of this is newly-hired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who will obviously have his say in what happens as well.

But Allen does have a solid point.

If Cousins had a hand in O’Connell’s hiring, it would signal the team pairing their quarterback with the best head coaching fit. You don’t do that for a player you’re looking to kick out the door. But then again, Cousins’ contract is expected to count $45 million against the salary cap next season, which is the third-highest cap hit at the quarterback position.

It could cause problems if he comes to the negotiating table unwilling to take a team-friendly deal. He’s a savvy businessman that clearly knows he’d have some serious value on the open free agent market. There’s nothing in his past negotiations that would suggest he’d be willing to take a pay cut.

But people do change, right?

Kevin O’Connell’s first coaching staff in Minnesota has been set.

The Vikings announced six additions to the first-year head coach’s staff on Tuesday. Those announcements include confirmation that they’ve hired Greg Manusky as their inside linebackers coach.


Manusky spent three seasons as a player for the Vikings and has been a defensive coordinator in Washington and with the 49ers, Chargers, and Colts. He was most recently a defensive quality control coach at Kentucky.

The Vikings also announced the hiring of assistant wide receivers coach/offensive quality control coach Tony Sorrentino, assistant defensive line coach A’Lique Terry, defensive quality control coach Steve Donatell, offensive quality control coach Derron Montgomery, and pass game specialist/game management coordinator Ryan Cordell. Donatell is the son of Vikings defensive coordinator Ed Donatell.

Assistant defensive backs coach Roy Anderson, wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell, and assistant linebackers coach Sam Siefkes will remain with the team after being part of Mike Zimmer’s final staff.

Kirk Cousin is like plain yogurt it just made me laugh

 

As much as it pains me to admit Capt Kirk just might be the Vikings best option another quarterback screw job by Tricky Ricky he NEVER could get that right,it will be interesting to see Kellen Mond there not Shaun Mannion and how he handles that

 

DAMN you Tricky Ricky for the Kirk Cousin nightmare they better not give give him an extension they can not afford him, if they do keep him I'm afraid it will be another so so season to me it just amazing the choke hold he has on the Vikings

 

And have you noticed Kevin O'Connell has said very little if anything about Capt Kirk leadership?

 

Kevin O’Connell touts the natural accuracy of Kirk Cousins

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has proven that he’s a very shrewd businessman. He’s also a pretty good passer, at least when a play is unfolding as designed.

Visiting with PFT Live at the Scouting Combine, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the positive attributes of Cousins.


“I really do believe having attempted to play quarterback in this league myself and not ultimately achieving that goal because of the fact I wasn’t accurate enough as a quarterback,” O’Connell said. “I think the number one for me now that I look at veteran quarterbacks, rookie quarterbacks, I evaluate them throughout any process is they need to be naturally accurate. Kirk is that. Kirk is one of the naturally accurate passers in this league. He does not need to think about throwing the football, being accurate, where he wants to place the ball. He naturally does it in the rhythm and timing of any offense he’s ever been in. That’s really been one of his traits that’s allowed him to have a lot of success.”

O’Connell sees other positives about Cousins.

“I think he’s tough,” O’Connell said. “I think he’s durable. I think he leads in his own way that he’s really become comfortable with throughout his career as he’s gained more experience and stepped into a lot of different huddles with a lot of teammates in multiple spots. Watching him here with this group and when you really start to turn on the tape and watch the level of quarterback at which he’s played it’s about continuing to refine and have him continue to grow within the system we’re going to build for him and the rest of our offensive players, both up front, the skill players. There’s a really good group to work with here. The sky’s the limit as far as how you want to play offense with the type of talent we have on that side of the ball. Kirk’s going to be a huge part of it. He’s our quarterback. I feel really good about his fit in building something and being a part of building something that we want to be as an offense here in Minnesota.”

It’s good that O’Connell believes so strongly in Cousins. And O’Connell’s assessment isn’t necessarily off the mark. But there’s a ceiling on Cousins. One year after another, that ceiling becomes more firm and solidified. At a certain point, it’s not about what a guy can become. He has become who he is.

That doesn’t mean Cousins can’t win. But he, unlike the true, short-list franchise quarterbacks, need more around him. A crippling defense, which he doesn’t currently have. Solid receivers and running backs, which he does have. An offensive line that allows him to run the play that’s called, which he desperately needs.

He is who he is an accurate passer even if he had an outstanding defense and outstanding o-line could he get the job done, and the only playoff game the talking heads talk about is the Saints game I believe he has reached his celling he is who he is

The defense was the Achilles' heel in 2021 and still has significant questions this offseason, with Anthony Barr, Everson Griffen, Sheldon Richardson, Patrick Peterson and others slated to hit free agency. Adding a corner or two in free agency is a priority for the system of new defensive coordinator Ed Donatell (who comes from the Vic Fangio tree). However, with little cap space, the Vikings might have to chase veterans coming off down years with experience in the system (i.e., Kyle Fuller types) to fill the gaps. Kirk Cousins' situation looms over the entire offseason, and while I don't see the Vikes moving on this offseason, the future of the QB job in Minnesota remains up in the air. Does the new staff see more in Kellen Mond than Mike Zimmer did?

Still a lot of moves and action going to happen with Minnesota under the new coaching staff. Most people keep bringing up the Cousins situation and that is looming, but plenty of signings or FA moves to be made on the defensive side of the ball.

Speaking of Cousins - he's not the Mr. Nice Guy, i thought he was. He kinda has the Vikings by the 45M dollar balls. In my opinion, he must restructure, but indications from him say he wont and he's certainly not going to take a pay-cut, so the QB situation is clearly a big mess. Im not sold on either backup, including Mond, so hopefully the Vikings score big in the Draft or make a splash in FA to find something/someone who can fill the QB spot till the Vikings figure out the future, because its not going to be Kirk Cousins and I dont know who out there is the answer either... its a bloody mess at the moment.
