George Paton will not be the next Cleveland Browns general manager.

Paton has pulled himself out of the running for the Browns gig, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Friday, per a source informed of the decision.

Paton had a second interview in Cleveland earlier this week.

The Vikings assistant GM has been a hot candidate for several seasons but was reticent to leave Minnesota. Given the connection with new Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, the Vikings former offensive coordinator, Paton was considered a front-runner for the gig. In the end, Paton will stay put.

With Paton pulling out of the running, that leaves Eagles executive Andrew Berry as the front-runner for the Cleveland GM gig. Berry previously served as the Browns' vice president of player personnel from 2016-2018 before moving to Philadelphia.

Vikings name Andre Patterson, Adam Zimmer co-Defensive Coordinators

On Monday afternoon, the Minnesota Vikings finalized all of their coaching changes for the offseason, and the defensive side of the ball is going to have a bit of a different look with the departure of George Edwards.

The team has announced that defensive line coach Andre Patterson and linebackers coach Adam Zimmer will serve as co-Defensive Coordinators for the team in 2020. This means that they will both continue to work with their respective position groups as well.

Patterson has long been lauded for his work with Minnesota’s defensive linemen since joining Zimmer in Minnesota in 2014. This is actually his second stint with the Vikings, as he also coached defensive linemen in Minnesota in 1998 and 1999. When the word came out that George Edwards would not be returning, I think Patterson was the first name that came to mind for a lot of people, and now he’ll be getting a chance as a defensive coordinator for the first time at the NFL level. He’s held that title for several college teams, most recently for Texas-El Paso from 2010 to 2012.

Like his father, Adam Zimmer also came to the Vikings in 2014. Previously, he had three different NFL stops as a defensive backs coach, but he’s been the linebackers coach since becoming a member of the Minnesota staff. He also got a bit of a unique experience in 2018 when he was named one of the head coaches for the annual collegiate East-West Shrine Game. This will be his first experience as a defensive coordinator.

It hasn’t really been clarified how the two coaches will split game-day duties, but hopefully there will be some clarification coming in the days and weeks to come.

Some of the other coaching changes the Vikings announced on Monday:

    • Assistant offensive line coach Andrew Janocko is moving to coaching wide receivers, replacing Drew Petzing, who has joined Kevin Stefanski in Cleveland.
    • Former Bengals and Dolphins coach Daronte Jones has been hired as the defensive backs coach, replacing Jerry Gray.
    • Former Redskins and Broncos coach Phil Rauscher has been hired as an assistant offensive line coach.
So, the Vikings’ coaching staff for the upcoming season is set, folks. What are your thoughts on the Defensive Coordinator arrangement and the other moves that have been made?

Hall of Fame defensive lineman Chris Doleman died Tuesday night after a two-year battle with brain cancer. He was 58.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Doleman’s passing in a press release.

“The entire Pro Football Hall of Fame family mourns the passing of Chris Doleman after a prolonged and courageous battle against cancer,” David Baker, the president and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, said in a news release. “I had the honor of getting to know him not only as a great football player but an outstanding human being. One of the honors of my life was witnessing Chris get baptized in the Jordan River during a Hall of Fame trip to Israel. The legacy of Chris Doleman will live forever in Canton, Ohio, for generations to learn from how he lived a life of courage and character.”

The Vikings, who selected Doleman with the fourth overall choice in 1985, also confirmed the bad news.

“The Minnesota Vikings express our deepest sympathies to Chris Doleman’s family and friends upon his passing,” the team said in a statement. “Chris was a great example for players past and present as he embodied all the best characteristics of a Viking — resilience, toughness and a competitive spirit. Chris always carried himself with dignity and class. Vikings fans worldwide will greatly miss him.”

In his fifth season, Doleman led the league with 21 sacks. He made 150.5 sacks in his 15-year career that included three years with the 49ers and two with the Falcons.

Doleman earned first-team All-Pro in 1987, ’89 and ’92 and was an eight-time Pro Bowler. He also was second-team all-decade for the 1990s.

He earned induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Doleman, diagnosed with glioblastoma, underwent surgery on Jan. 25, 2018, to remove a cancerous tumor in his brain. Two other tumors were treated with radiation and chemotherapy.

Three days ago, Doleman tweeted: “Today is my 2 year anniversary of being a brain cancer survivor! Huge!”

Glioblastomas are basically a walking death sentence as we are dealing with that with my wife's father. They are supposed to be pretty rare, but Neil Peart also just died from one. 2-3 years post diagnosis is pretty good in these cases which is what sucks.

  18. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

There has been rumors and I don't know why, except cap space issues.

  19. Badd_Man1 M.V.P. Vikings

Sounds like Diggs might fall victim because of this cap space sh*t,the one thing i don't get is Thielen untouchable???
