I thought that too at first, but evidently it's not that simple. From what I've heard, the 6 games are considered a "given" and DW will not be suiting up for any of them. Apparently, the only way that could have happened that we got DW in week 1, is if the NFLPA would have also appealed the original 6 game sentence. Since they didn't, and the deadline has passed, Watson is out at least the first 6 and obviously that number is likely to go up significantly.
Peter C. Harvey named as Disciplinary Officer for Watson's appeal by the NFL. Peter C. Harvey was the first African American to serve as New Jersey Attorney General. Harvey was appointed by New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey as acting attorney general on February 15, 2003, and was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate as attorney general on June 16, 2003
Maybe it was you constantly telling people they're not real Browns fans because they use their brain and / or conscience even a little bit. But hey, just a guess based on literally multiple times you've been told that directly in just the last few weeks.
Is he being paid by the NFL / Goodell? If so, then please refer to your previous call……”The Browns are phuqued”
Well they've already appointed and then over-ruled one disciplinary officer, so what does this really mean? Anything short of a year long ban, and Mr. Harvey gets tossed aside as well? Might as well just call it a year long suspension. What is with the charade?
SI reported that, over the weekend before Sue Robinson's ruling, Watson was offered a deal that would have amounted to a 12 game suspension and $10M fine. Obviously it was rejected, and here we are.
Was reported on cbs as well. Could end up biting Watson in the ass as rhe league will now be going for a full year.
My thoughts exactly. He'd probably take that deal if they offered it today. I guess I'm holding out a sliver of hope that they can still reach an agreement of this sort some how, but not feeling very optimistic. What a shitty roller coaster this has been. Started out with high hopes after the most controversial trade in Browns history. Then talk of a year long suspension dashed those hopes. Along came Judge Robinson and suddenly the vibe changed once again, giving hope after leaks of a 6 game suspension began to emerge. And then it happened. Six games was the punishment, giving Browns tremendous boost knowing they'll have the QB savior for the final 11 games! But that excitement lasted for a day and a half, as naturally the NFL appealed the decision, demanding a year long indefinite suspension, thus dropping the hammer once again on Brownstown.....All this happening as Andrew Berry has constructed the most talented roster this team has had in the modern era. Just one piece missing, and we have no idea when that piece will be available, if ever. Powerless as they are in all of this fiasco, this is what the Browns signed up for. So now the fate of their star QB lies in the hands of good ol Pete Harvey, one of the decision makers that helped to determine the punishment for Ezekiel Elliott, for his personal conduct violations. Allthough there is still the possibility, however slim it may be, that the league and the players union could come to an agreement, it doesn't seem likely. And this ugly story will continue to make headlines for the forseeable future. I wonder if knowing what they know now, Andrew Berry and company would still pull the trigger on that deal? Or even join the pursuit to begin with?
There are two main reasons why we most likely won't see Watson at all this season. The main thing in Sue Robinson's 16 page report is that she believed a sexual assault took place. Whether it was violent or not, is kind of irrelevant. That, along with Watson's steadfast denial that he ever did anything wrong, lead me to believe that Peter Harvey will throw the works at Watson and give the NFL everything they are seeking in terms of punishment. Get Jimmy G on the horn, AB...
You don't really want to pay Jimmy G 24 million do you? This isn't monopoly money. Cap space means nothing if you aren't willing to spend and this is an owner that has consistently spent less than he was able to: 2018 Rollover 56.5M 2019 Rollover 30.5M 2020 Rollover 30.4M 2021 Rollover 10.6M I don't believe they'd pay Jimmy 24M anyway but if they do that's 24M less in the bank to pay future players. I think that's a bad investment.
Agree 100% I know, I know, I know . . . At one point in time I posted that the Browns should get Jimmy G. in Berea TOMORROW. Then I went and looked at his contract. I WAS WRONG !
Not to mention . . . Jimmy G. is NOT a free agent. It would also take current assets to offer up in a trade. We burned through most of our assets to get D. Watson. They're no longer available. Which means the Browns would need to build a trade offer with PLAYERS. Shipping players off to get Jimmy G. weakens the supporting cast.
If he can provide us with a deep run into the playoffs, which he has done more than once, that would be relatively cheap by starting QB standards. What I don't want is for this team to consider this a wasted season if DW can't go. Too much talent around. By no means do I want to give up the farm for Jimmy G., nor do I think we'd have to. SF doesn't want to pay $24M for their back-up QB, so it would seem that something reasonable could be worked out. If not, then so be it. I'm going on the assumption that they want out of that contract.
If you are content going all season with Jacoby and the Josh's, I guess so... Personally, I think you were right with your original take. We have more cap space available than any team in the league. If a reasonable deal can be worked out for compensation with SF, the Browns absolutely should be working to obtain JG. I'd think the Niners would be aware by now that no team is going to give up the farm for him.
He has no guaranteed money left. If they want out of the contract all they have to do is cut him. This isn't similar to the Baker deal. They owe him nothing.
They may be waiting for an injury to occur and then deal him. The other team that needs a qb os seattle and I dont see the 49ers sending him there unless they offer a deal that cant be passed up but then again I didnt see baker eating part of his salary so he could be traded.
Shanahan has already said he's not going to be on the roster. They won't even allow him to practice. They are absolutely kicking him to the curb unless a playoff contender loses a starting QB to injury at some point in the next two weeks. Even then, facilitating a trade would require Jimmy G to manipulate his contract.
It doesn't matter what I'm personally content with. But I'm beginning to look at the realities of the situation. I'll elaborate more in a separate post later. Per OvertheCap.com Right now, the Browns have $48.7M in cap space. That space will decrease somewhat over the course of the season. Let's just assume (for the moment) the Browns have to spend $8M to cover player losses during the season. That happens every year to every team. That leaves them with $40.8M cap space that they could rollover to the 2023 season. Fast forward to the 2023 season. At this moment, the Browns are projected to be $32.9M OVER THE CAP. Assuming they rollover 100% of the $40.8M cap space at the end of the 2022 season, that leaves them with $7.9M in cap space at the start of the 2023 season. So, let's say you do, in fact, go sign Jimmy G for the 2022 season. -and- you get him for "only" $20M on a one-year rental. Now your cap space at the end of the 2022 season drops to $20.8M and they rollover 100% of that into the 2023 season. You are now still over the cap by $12.1M -and- you only have one QB on your roster (maybe).
Based on recent reports, It shouldn't shock anyone that Watson won't play in the NFL in 2022. It's my guess that Peter C. Harvey will hand down an indefinite suspension of at least one year. after that one year, Watson will need to re-apply to join the league. At that point, Roger Goodell will check "public opinion" and deny Watson's request. It's possible that Watson will never again play in the NFL.
