I mean, he couldn't pass a physical as of just a few weeks ago, so maybe temper that enthusiasm. Hopefully he's healthy for the season.

So, after @dlinebass5 made a good point yesterday about not assuming guilty/not guilty based on a settlement in a civil case, I started thinking, what would it take for me personally to welcome Deshaun Watson to the team?

It obviously starts with either outright clearing your name or making amends that are acceptable by the victims. Well, 20 of the 24 have apparently found what they need to move on. We still have to go through the other 4(+?), but it is a good start. So, then I can't help it, but I feel like bending in the civil cases, he must have finally felt some responsibility for his actions, so this is what I would feel appropriate from a fan point of view that would make me feel better about rooting for him on Sundays.

Let's start with his compensation from the Browns.

    He received a $230,000,000 contract:
It is pretty gray in the area of sports agent compensation, other than the NFL caps SALARY at 3%. The average compensation for a sports agent is 4-10%, so I am going to assume here that the agent will get 10% of the bonus money.
Starting with the signing bonus it breaks down like this:
    $44,965,000
    10% 4,496,500 goes to agent
    Deshaun gets $40,468,500

    Salary break down:
    $185,0356,000
    3% $5,551,050 goes to agent
    Deshaun gets 179,483,950

    Total to Deshaun pre-tax, $219,952,450
Total tax rate or 27.5% (total Federal), 4.7% Ohio and 2.5% Cleveland city = 34.7% or $76,323,500

Take home pay for Deshaun Watson over the next 5 years is $143,628,950, assuming no one will touch him for endorsements. or $28,725,790.00 average per year.

That is where I would start... Take 10.1% for reparations to the league and make something good out of a very bad situation that he helped create, that would be a great start. The league has expenses related to investigation/image reparation, etc..

$14,500,000 fine which will be split up for $4.5M to the league and $10M to go to a donation from the league to the Me Too Movement foundation, if they are split up by region, 50% to the Houston area and 50% to the Cleveland area.

This is obviously on top of the individual settlements with the victims.

Then 5 speaking engagements to the largest youth camps in the united states, where ever they might be. Not to speak about his experience, but rather speak out against sexual abuse in general. Make these young minds start to think about respecting others at a young age.

If THAT happened, I would move on completely.

Actually it was 3 months ago, not weeks. It was related to the foot surgery he had after his injury in the playoffs. 3 months of recovery goes a long way towards passing a stringent NFL physical. The Bears probably lost out on a good signing due to the timing of the physical. He had surgery the last week of January, the Bears gave him a physical the 2nd week of March... Less than 2 months of recovery, compared to 5 months of recovery for the Steelers signing.

Reach an injury settlement with release with the team after T.J. Watt takes his head off on an edge rush?

You're making my point. Clearly he was still a player in demand, so why wasn't he signed until now? There's no way he could've passed a physical prior to team camps, or else he would've been signed by then, at the very least to get him in the building and working with the team (even if he's not running). IE. he couldn't pass a physical as of a few weeks ago. And his health will be in question until he proves otherwise.

  7. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

I'm glad that this works for you, but I want to put in context what you just proposed:

Giving his money to the NFL and a charitable organization. Then, having gone through no rehabilitation whatsoever, give educational / awareness talks to children specific to the punishment for his actions (getting paid $100+ million to not work for a year, and give a little bit of to charity).

Yeah, I'm not on board with that. I really hope that's not what happens.

  8. gidion72 Legend Steelers

I don’t see how the NFL can sugar coat this. Ray Carruth and Aaron Hernandez are the only players to do something that can be considered worse than what Watson has been accused of. Let’s put this in true perspective for once. How can the league justify it?

  9. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

You are welcome to feel the way you do, but you're missing the point that I took. The VICTIMS, which are the most important piece to this, have agreed to compensation. Deshaun Watson didn't do this to me, you or any other NFL fan. If THEY are satisfied with the outcome, then who am I to judge that? At that point, it isn't about the acts against the victims, it's the damage he did to the shield and the Browns fans feelings about the organization. To me, that needs some kind of reconciliation.

    A) He is already getting rehabilitation/therapy, it started the week he came to the Browns.
    B) Do you really think the athletes come up with the speeches they give at youth camps? It would be performed off a script that the women's movement has prepared for events like this. Even in today's society, I wouldn't be surprised if 100% of the participants knew who Deshaun Watson was, but 85% of them either had no idea that he had been in trouble, or known why he was in trouble. At that age, they just know he is a professional baller, thus an influencer whether you like it or not. These women's groups do not have a strong influential voice in the crowd for this type of event for free. If they wanted a speaker of his magnitude, it would cost them $5,000.00+ per event. This isn't a, "he sexually abused women, let's put him at an event with kids". It obviously would be after an amount of time had past AFTER ALL of his legal issues are settled and what ever punishment is handed down by the league, etc.. Time would have passed and obviously he would be vetted, as all attendees are, for an event for children. Do I really need to explain every detail of something in every post I write?
    C) The punishment handed down by the league, won't allow for him to get paid to not work for a year, unless you are talking about last year with the Texans? His suspension will be unpaid, loss of wages. A little but to charity goes a long way. In most cases, none of it goes to charity. I highly doubt that the "Me Too Movement" has received many $10M donations. It also wouldn't be prudent to have another athlete that gets into the same predicament to pay more than that if they are making $4M/year on a 3 year deal... You need to scope the big picture.

So, please elaborate on what you really hope would happen, rather than taking excerpts of another post and making it sound ridiculous.

  10. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Clearly it was because of the injury, but the Bears had the opportunity to go through with the signing despite the physical, make an amendment that he retake a physical at a later date, etc. They were also signing a 3 year deal. That might have been his stipulation in the beginning.. which has been amended at this point to a 1 year deal with the Steelers. After the initial signing period, his value automatically drops, along with every other athlete that didn't sign. You are never more valuable than in the first week of free agency. Some veterans would rather bypass all off season workouts and get as much as they can on a one year deal, it happens a lot actually.

YOUR case was being made that merely a few weeks ago he couldn't pass a physical... That was very inaccurate unless you consider 14 weeks a few... I personally do not, but to each their own. There is no other documented physical to relate this to.

He had surgery January 20th, the Bears signed him and gave him a physical on March 13th 8 weeks after surgery that takes 3-4 months for recovery.

The guy had 16 QB hits, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks to go with 49 total tackles.. The Bears could have had him for $26M guaranteed over three years... MOST LIKELY recovering from foot surgery in this day and age. Instead the Steelers get him for 1 year, most likely prove it deal once again.

I think you are more upset that the Bears lost another potential help, rather than a Steelers fan being excited they signed one..

Hell, I was upset when the Browns didn't re-sign him and he had more production on the Bengals than he ever had with the Browns. If he's healthy, he's a baller.. Foot surgery recovery is typically 3-4 months, trainging camp starts almost 6 months to the day after his surgery.

My money would have went with him being ready for training camp, rather than expecting him to pass a physical 2 months into a 3-4 month recovery period. The Bears are the losers in this deal...

  11. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Citation needed. I see no mention of it using either of those keywords. If he is getting behavioral / corrective therapy, what is he getting it for? His most recent comments were that he didn't do anything wrong, and that he's sorry if his "statements were triggering for people". Hard to get corrective therapy for "doing nothing wrong", and if he IS in the midst of it, it clearly hasn't helped him yet.

Incorrect. If he is suspended for the 2022 season, he wouldn't get paid his 2022 salary of... $1 million. The $40 million signing bonus doesn't get touched. If you think that constitutes him not getting paid for the year in practical terms, you are probably in good company with his awful team of lawyers.

When it's this fucking stupid, you absolutely do. Though after reading all that nonsense, we might be better off without it.

SMH. Definitely one of your worst takes ever gid.

How about Henry Ruggs? Wow, that took some in depth research. I had to go back a whole year to find an NFL player that killed someone while he was drunk and stupid.

Is killing somebody worse than what Watson is accused of? I think so.

I'll just throw a few more names out off the top of my head...Robert Rozier, Jovan Belcher, Leonard Little, Dwayne Goodrich, Nate Webster.

We don't even want to get started on ex-NFL'rs that went bad....

He’s mentioned it in interviews.. go watch them yourself, he’s only spoke a few times.
He signed the contract that was given to him by his agent. There isn’t anything you or I can do about that. What they can do is give him a fine to go along with that suspension, which is what I suggested… try to keep up.

You’re the moron that can’t comprehend simple sentences, so you try to rearrange meaning to give yourself some reason to argue. People tell me all the time, why give him the time of day? Well, it’s fun making you look like an ass. It’s really that simple.

You missed the point to argue schematics. The point was that Watson’s actions were only topped by players who murdered someone. The league has destroyed some players careers over marijuana but a sexual predator is ok. I wasn’t trying to make a list of every NFL player that killed somebody, just point out that they are the only ones that committed an infraction worse than what Watson is accused of.

  15. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

He's said he didn't do anything wrong. You don't believe him. So why in the fuck do you believe anything else he's said? Seriously, you have to understand how stupid this logic is.

First of all, "ask", not "tell". It's okay, my son only figured out the difference in first grade, it takes time.

Second of all, I'm literally taking your direct words. Nothing rearranged, nothing out of context... I'm taking your words for exactly what they are.

You said, "The punishment handed down by the league, won't allow for him to get paid to not work for a year" - your suggestion was that they fine him $14 million. You know that's less than 40, right? Again, first grade, so you might need time, I get it.

This is only the second intelligent thing you have said in months. Congratulations, you got me on grammar. Ask your psyche ward nurse for a lollipop.

I know your an asshole, but I didn’t think you were that ignorant. They can’t touch the signing bonus. It is what it is, put it on the side table and forget it’s there. How much explaining does it take for you to understand?

If he is suspended, he does not get paid his SALARY dipshit.

Do you have a master plan on how to get his signing bonus that no one else has ever figured out?

Im all for hearing another option, but you can’t come up with any theories or thoughts of your own. Your ONLY play is to try to make someone else sound stupid, but it just keeps blowing up in your face. This is getting boring, I’m done with you until you can come up with something interesting to discuss.

If they fined him $14.5M, it would be historical. The largest fine ever imposed was $1M to Ed Debartolo. The only larger fines were to teams, the largest of that category $10M to Washington.

So, I think my calculations are probably rather large, not too small like you would elude to.

There are Steelers fans that are actually upset we signed Ogunjobi because of that play. A push. Have they never played a sport before? I fought my best friends playing sports. It's called competition. So dumb.

A lot to unwrap here. Couple questions and comments...

    1) I've read some places that if the NFL put him on indefinite suspension to buy some time it would be paid.

    2) If not, doesn't he have a 1M base salary? Where is the 10M figure coming from?

    3) I don't see a scenario where Deshaun Watson would be welcome at any speaking event. Maybe several, several years down the road IF he acknowledges he did something wrong. What would he have to offer now? He's denying everything.

EDIT: I see you mentioned a fine in subsequent posts but pretty sure fines are collectively bargained. They can't just pick an arbitrary number. I could be wrong.
