What a wild 1st round that was. The lack of big trades didn't surprise me, personally I always felt that stuff was over-talked. Most other things did surprise me tho. No defensive player taken in the first 14picks is insane and smashed the record for that. The Eagles getting the top CB at 22 in today's passing league is pure batshit crazy. 3 teams id single out: - No surprise im starting here. One way or the other, that Falcons picks is gonna be talked about for years. If he pans out they'll be lauded for such a bold move, and rightly so tbh. If not it's one of the worst picks in many years. Personally I hate it. Partly cos the Falcons are close to being in legit win now mode imo and this pick does zero to help that. Also my two cents is Penix had no business being near the top10, even allowing for an environment where QB's routinely get overdrafted. If he got past the Raiders I think the Falcons actually have a legit shot at getting him the 2nd round, or at least trading up to 32 if they wanted the 5th year option. But the other reason I hate this pick is cos the whole thing has just been so under-utilized. I mean if Penix is the guy you want then that's one thing, but surely you cant believe you'll lose him by trading down a little. A con move on someone was just begging to be made and any GM worth his salt is all over that. The Vikings had already rode their luck not getting McCarthy before 8, and we know they were prepared to move up cos the did! The Falcons should've been on the phone to the Jets, Vikes & Broncos, but particularly the Vikings. I hope some post draft reveal comes out that they did try to do that, but something tells me they didn't. - Pains me to say it, but the Vikings crushed the 1st round. Any outcome that included them getting McCarthy while keeping their 23rd overall is an immediate win. That 23rd(and extra picks) turning into Dallas Turner is great outcome for them. Yes the price of 3picks was high but they've just added big talent. The NFC North as a whole made out well in that 1st round. - Did the Jags just low-key win the 1st round? I called Brian Thomas Jr to the Jags just before the combine, it just made so much sense and I could never understand zero mocks predicting this. Loved his tape, he felt over-looked in a loaded WR class. In a lot of other drafts that guy goes a lot higher. The Jags would've been fully justified in taking him at 17, so to get THREE picks inc a 3rd rounder and still get your guy as well is A+ all day long.
When one of the most senior guys in your building was once responsible for one of the worst QB decisions of all-time, it comes into focus a little more.
I'm on board with what the Falcons did, and I expect to be in a slim minority with that opinion. I posted somewhere in the general discussion thread that if Bo Nix or Penix slid to the top of the second and the Panthers had the opportunity to take a passer to hedge their bet on Young, then they should absolutely do it. I'm an advocate for a team taking a passer in situations that would be looked down on by a lot of people, because when you look at the injury rate and how many passers start each season, having quality of depth at that position is something that teams should have a much greater focus on, IMO. With an aging passer that is on what is basically a two-year deal that can last up to 4, adding a talented high upside rookie to groom behind him is a rock-solid move for a team that went through a full season of watching what happens when you don't properly invest in the position. As for the trade down aspect - Why? If he's your guy, and you have no way of knowing that the Bears won't trade out of 9 for someone looking to move up to get him, there's no reason to even flirt with the idea. It's easy for us to look at the draft board and move pieces around, thinking that there is no way player X will be drafted by team Z, so this is a safe trade out situation, but you can never know what other teams are looking to do. You mention the Vikings moving up a slot for McCarthy. What if they move up to #8 and the Falcons drop down to #11, only to have the Jets decide they are good with moving down to #13 while the Raiders make the move up for Penix? Now you've traded back thinking you were outsmarting the board, only to miss out on the player you originally coveted.
I'll throw out a couple wildcards for the Bills pick: Keon Coleman Marshawn Kneeland And I'll add the name I think gets called: Troy Franklin
Seeing all the names still available makes me very excited for the Colts picks tonight. I loved the Latu selection last night. Ton of great DBs, some very good Centers, Guards, even WRs still available.

Not sure about everyone else, but I find the derision on WR rankings after the top 3 very amusing. Also great for rookie drafts. Hopefully all other *top-10* options get drafted tonight, to keep them pushing for higher selection.
Another thought; So the new regime in Chargers town trades away their most established WR, and despite many expectations decides to go OT at 5 OVR. I understand the history of that HC and OC. But does that mean we’re guaranteed to see an RB drafted by them sometime tonight? And one more; it’s just a hunch, but I got a feeling both highly touted C prospects will go pretty early tonight. Might be some jostling to get first pick of that litter or to join the party after one goes.
They all make sense and none would upset me. I just think Mitchell is their guy assuming nothing else happens, and he'd be the top guy on the board for me too.
You signed Cousins to a pretty lucrative contract. Then you used your very first pick of the draft and took a player that will not help Cousins at all this season. You basically made Kirk Cousins the highest paid bridge QB in NFL history. I would totally understand if this was a Matt Flynn/Russell Wilson situation where you just signed a guy to a good deal but then there's this kid sitting there that you think absolutely can't miss and you're gonna draft him and play him and say screw the money we are about to waste. But I really don't see Penix as that guy. His lack of touch on basic throws is gonna hurt him. His injury history is deeply concerning. His inability to throw lobs and arc throws bugs the living hell out of me. He's a one throw guy....bullet passes into tight windows. And he can't throw from a suffocating pocket. I see way too much Carson Palmer/Jay Cutler in Penix.
Hate that they got Turner. Did not want him in the division at all. And I think of all the situations McCarthy could have been drafted into the Vikings were probably one of the top 2 or 3 best ones for him personally.
If they get a WR I don't see why they can't. The losses on D hurt a bit too but they were getting older and missing games already.
No way. McCarthy is perfect for Minnesota, IMO. He will have time to acclimate, weapons galore, solid offensive line and the scheme of playing from the pocket is there also. He wanted to play there and they wanted him, I think its a good match. Besides they are stuck with him now.
Here's a thought. Falcons may be planning on getting busted for tampering with Cousins and the penalty may be the loss of 2025's 1st round pick, so they were looking ahead?
