Not necessarily. I obviously have him ahead right now, based on ignorance of the other candidates, but that could change with film if I have time to get to it. I love the fact that he is a very mobile QB, but is a pure passer who rarely runs. His career is based on his ability to be accurate down field. He is a threat to run on every play, yet it is very rare that he does. Young is similar, but the physical characteristics arrow leans toward Stroud. It would come down to film to determine who makes the better reads pre-snap. Who adjusts more accurately at the line and who has better footwork in their drop back. At this point I have no idea. All I know is they both have great releases. And yes… it will be one of these two. The others are not on their level.
None of you slackers posted this yet? Its official, Ryans is the Texans new HC. Not the move i would've made but good luck to him. Trying to decide what this could mean in relation to the Texans trade up potential for the draft. Indeterminate. @Campbell wot do you think.
lol... I posted it in the GM's, Coaches, Carousel thread right after it went public. I didnt want to be redundant.
Texans request permission to interview Bobby Slowik The Texans have requested to interview 49ers passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik for their vacant offensive coordinator job under new head coach DeMeco Ryans, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. Slowik joined the 49ers in 2017 as a defense quality control coach, a position he held two seasons. He became an offensive assistant in 2019. In 2021, Slowik earned a promotion to San Francisco’s offensive passing game specialist before taking his current title before last season. Slowik has also worked in the NFL with Washington as a defensive assistant (2011-13) and video assistant (2010). PFT
Ryans Is defensively inclined, but if he and the Texans land the right OC, it might work out. Lovie Smith didnt set the bar to high recently and the Texans defense was a siv last season.
My quick thought would be that the Texans just became the front runner in the search for a veteran passer. I’ll have more time to gather some opinion on it later this morning.
Putting a little more thought into it - The combination of Ryans being a defensive minded coach and the Texans having been through the Deshaun Watson saga, I circled right back to my original thinking. Going after a veteran passer while continuing to build out the roster may be the preferred option.
Captain Obvious here with an obvious question. Who would be those said Veterans at the moment based on your opinion... maybe you got 3 possibles in mind?
Personally im not sure Watson should come into it much. Things turned horribly sour, but looking at that objectively, what turned out re Watson was a freak event, i find it v hard to see how there's any legislating for that or that it should be an influencer in the future. I never heard a single thing about such stuff re Watson pre draft, pretty sure cos it didnt exist. As far as im aware, it could literally have been Mahomes, it could've been Trubisky. Unless someone knows more about it than me which is possible. Actually, if one wanted to go the positive route, in football terms there's no doubt they nailed that pick. The GM is different, how about the scouting staff?... The defensive HC tho, that could shift things for sure. If thats an offensive minded HC its just natural that there may be more immediate interest in the QB position. Ryans may well take a more rounded view on a roster build. It would hardly be a surprise if his initial interest was the D. Hell, look at the Bears. They already invested a ton in the QB position by the time Eberflus arrived. But rather than give 2 shits about putting actual NFL talent at OL & WR whats the FIRST fucking thing they did?! Announce a change in scheme on D to a 4-3 requiring many new players. New HC focusing on his side of the ball first. I dont consider it a given, there's always the old argument of will they be drafting this high next offseason? If they really believe in Ryans(they must) then surely they dont expect to be a bottom 2 team in 2023. But it certainly feels the odds they will NOT trade up to #1 for a QB have risen.
@EvertonBears To clarify - I was viewing the potential for Watson to have an influence on ownership’s mindset through the lens of what went on prior to Watson and the massage accusations. It’s easy to forget everything that went on prior to Watson’s scandal.
Ahh i see. So you mean wanting to be traded etc. I get it. It really is easy to forget all that stuff, as i just proved!
I think it all depends on which passers become available via trade. Brady announcing his retirement yesterday changes things a bit. His potential to go to Las Vegas would have put Carr into motion quicker, which may have freed up other options. Without that domino falling it will slow things up just a touch. If Rodgers were to get sent to Nashville, then Tannehill becomes a new option. Jimmy G would sit at the top of the list, unless something unseen would put Lamar into the market.
Yeah, I think it’s easy to forget he had already refused to play before they suspended him from the team.
Some of the recent scuttlebutt has Rodgers to the Raiders. Its all a lot of guess work at the moment, especially when dealing with old dogs like Rodgers and that contract, I guess.
Getting a vet QB wouldn't be the problem for the Texans. Getting a good vet QB would be the problem. Which legit good vet is gonna want to go to that dumpster fire organization? It would have to be all about the money, cos deep playoffs/SB aint happening inside of 3years. Thats time many of these vets dont have. What they do have is money, lots of it, cos QB is the most overpaid position in the league. So how much of a lure is more money really in this scenario? Play out the string of your career taking many L's, a probable beating since its a bad team but you get more money that wont dramatically alter your life cos you're rich already? That the pitch? This is the Texans so i def wouldn't pass them bringing in a Jacoby Brissett level guy and flipping the bird to the fanbase. But an actual near-top10 guy? Hard to see. Everybody likes Demeco Ryans but that would be a hell of a leap of faith. Maybe they sign Jimmy G. Jimmy G is gonna look bang average the second he leaves San Fran anywhere but maybe the Jets and even then...
This is exactly the issue with getting a high name passer to Houston, but there are some unknown factors that we are going to have to wait and see how they play out. First, the musical chairs for offseason passers may leave someone without a seat. That would probably be the best case scenario for the Texans to lure someone in that may have no real want to go thereat the start of the offseason. We can probably assume Lamar Jackson is going to get franchised tagged. We can also probably assume that Derek Carr won't be landing on the Texans roster. I think Daniel Jones is going to get some kind of deal, or perhaps the transition tag. It's an easily justifiable move for the Giants. "We would like to have one more year with Daniel working with Daboll before making a decision on whether or not he is the franchise quarterback that we have been looking for." I think Jimmy Garoppolo is not going to be a lock to the Jets like some think. There may be an outside chance he ends up in Miami (the Dolphins may not be comfortable with going into 2023 with Tua (health)), the Raiders may look to land him if a deal for Rodgers doesn't evolve, Ron Rivera will likely covet another veteran passer and the Panthers could look to land Jimmy while seeing what they have in Matt Corral, once he returns. I think we can probably throw Seattle into the mix of people that will be interested in him, the Giants may not want to continue with Jones, the Saints could come calling, as may Tampa, and the Colts may decide to kick the tires as well. The market for Garappolo is going to be a lot warmer than what some may think, and I will circle back your thoughts on him in a moment. Geno Smith will likely try and sign a deal to remain the starter in Seattle, even taking some seriously short money to do so. That brings us to the remainder of the list: Sam Darnold Baker Mayfield Jacoby Brissett Andy Dalton Gardner Minshew Cooper Rush Mason Rudolph Teddy Bridgewater Mike White Drew Lock Taylor Heinicke Case Keenum Blaine Gabbert Nick Mullens C.J. Beathard Joe Flacco Kyle Allen Chad Henne Chase Daniel Brandon Allen Josh Johnson Tim Boyle Joshua Dobbs Nathan Peterman Nate Sudfeld Jeff Driskel Trace McSorley David Blough Easton Stick I agree with you on how the approach may end up being a guy like Jacoby, but it may be because there are simply no other passers left to try and woo. If that's the case, then the Texans have to make a decision on whether or not any of the top 3 passers in this class are the kind of player that you can rebuild an entire franchise around. That's no small order, because it is going to take a lot more than arm talent. The gray matter is going to need to be iron strong in an environment that will become quickly unforgiving, especially since there will be a built in narrative from the media. It's the same narrative that you alluded to - Dumpster Fire Organization. What about those passers? Are any of them the caliber of an Eli Manning, where everything can be put on their shoulders from not only an on-field point of view, but within the locker room and with the media? Yeah, that's right, I used Eli fucking Manning as a prime example of a guy that handled all of the ups, downs and complete horse shit that came with being the franchise quarterback of the New York Giants. There was a lot about Eli's play that would leave me scratching my head, but it cannot be denied that he was a total professional for that organization, and they brought home the hardware with no small help of his steady stewardship. That's where signing a player like Jacoby is not such a bad idea, considering how well he navigated all of the bullshit that went on in Cleveland this season. The Texans could definitely do worse than having Jacoby in uniform behind center on game days. So, if the Texans brass is not comfortable with any of the top tier passers on the board this season, then punting on the position until 2024 may not be off the board. If they are sold on just one of the three, then they fucked themselves royally and will need to give up much needed draft capital just to move up after that player. Now, let's circle back to Jimmy G... You're in somewhat of a majority when it comes to thinking that Garappolo is destined to be a mediocre passer, once he leaves San Fran. Now, I don't claim to have a crystal ball that says your wrong, but I think there is enough on his resume to suggest that he could come in and be more than a placeholder for maybe the next 5 years while the Texans work on rebuilding the roster. We are talking about a player that knew, for a fact, that the coaching staff in San Francisco wanted him gone and he still came off the bench (without any real offseason prep) and led the 49ers into a position where they were able to challenge for the NFC Championship. This past season, he had a 7-3 record, 16 TDs to 4 INTs, and a QB rating of 103. Not bad for a guy that they were ready to run out of town on a rail. People point towards Purdy and say "well if he was doing it as the last pick of a draft, what does that say about Jimmy?". The fact is, we don't know what that says about Garappolo this season because of how big of an impact Christian McCaffrey had for the offense. What we do know - This isn't the first time Jimmy has had success within that 49ers' system, so we have to see him in another environment before we know whether or not he can be successful without Shanahan. He was the top-rated passer on my board the year he came out, he has outplayed just about every pundit's expectation of him going into that draft, and I wouldn't be surprised if he were successful in another uniform. My bigger concern - The injury history.
The only QB off your long shit list of retreads and backups that could surprise anyone is Mason Rudolph. He has never had a chance outside of the second season in Pittsburgh. I still think he can be a serviceable starter in the league. If Tomlin had started the season with him the Steelers would have made the playoffs.
To me its very interesting with the Texans as they have 1 QB on the roster, so they basically are forced to draft one. Of all the QB's mentioned , Jimmy G makes the most sense, except for one thing, which is changeable, he wants a winner or at least the potential, so it boils down to, imo, money talks , bull shit walks. If they give him a likeable contract ($$$), he may bite. My best bet is they draft somebody, like Stroud or Young, even Levis and throw him into the fire... I hope not, but stranger shit has happened, ie, Fields in Chicago. One thing certain is, Ryans has his hands full, not only at QB, but every position on both sides of the ball. This is going to be fun to watch.
So, here's my thing: Ryans got a six year contract. They're also drafting second overall with the first as a tradeable get, with several potentially desirable QB's in the class. Presumably, they don't want to be in this position again. If they've got a first round grade on a passer, they should take him. Ryans isn't a retread coach like they've had the last few years - hopefully a young coach with a long contract means they know they've gotta invest in the future, and they take a QB and give their new HC / QB duo patience. I'm not saying they can't also sign a veteran, but I'd consider it a failing if they don't use this year to give themselves some kind of hope at the most important position on the field.
