I'll do better than that . . . Using the numbers on the Google Spreadsheet that Tim put out when the rosters were locked, it shows a cap number of $4,750,000 with a dead cap of $2,225,000. That would give TD a bigger cap saving than he orginally claimed. ($300,000 more)
Yay, more money... I'm trying guys. My problem is always the same. I'm just awful at navigating these sites, and not good on computers in general. OTC has me confused on how to do anything, and spreadsheets are even worse. It seriously took me forever to learn the Sportrac site last year. As far as I can see, that Ellis deal has been the only discrepancy...FWIW, I still don't know how to do half the things I need to. For instance, I don't know how to remove Trent Brown and Tyrell Williams from my roster right now without giving me a huge expense. I just zero out their contracts and kick em to the bottom of the roster as if they are nobody.... If anything, Sportrac is the one site where I think I can at least have some chance at this exercise....
Hopefully I’m helping. But if I cut say Trent Brown, all I’m doing is 1)taking the number that is my overall cap space, use a calculator if you have to to add whatever savings you’ve gained by cutting him to that number. The dead cap will still be built in. 2)delete entire row in your spreadsheet with his name. Just that easy. 3) for bonus points you can add his dead cap to a total for dead cap if you’ve built a spot for that. Or add cutting him to any area where you’re writing down transactions
Raiders release Denzelle Good Save- $1,175,000 dead- $500,000 Kieth Smith Save $1,500,000 dead 0 Nathan Peterman save - $675,000 dead- 0
I'm sure there's a reason why the Raiders carry two Punters on the roster, but I just can't find it.... Raiders release Punter Drew Kaser Save $720,000 dead 0
If in doubt, don't be afraid to ask. RT and Joe and I can usually help figure out the messy ones. The confusion on the Ellis deal certainly wasn't your fault. That mess was because the numbers changed while we were starting this exercise. That kind of thing happens - Joe had something similar on one of his potential restructures. The general concept is that when you cut a guy, you save his base salary and any roster bonuses that haven't been paid yet. You don't save anything that is guaranteed. (That's the situation with Carr this year - his salary is fully guaranteed, so even if the team wanted to cut him, they're stuck paying him anyway.) The "dead money" thing is that anything prorated for this year from signing bonuses still has to count against the cap, and anything prorated to future years will have to be counted this year. (side note - there's a "post June 1" exception, but we generally don't use it because it usually doesn't help us enough for our purposes.) The shortcut to figuring out the potential savings is to look at this year's base salary and workout/roster bonuses. Add those up. Then look at any prorated bonus amounts for future years and subtract those from the number you have. If there's nothing else that makes things messy, that will be the net savings. The messy stuff comes from incentive clauses and roster bonuses that have already been paid. That's where the Ellis numbers got really messy - one of the web sites had the number AFTER the bonus was paid and the other had the number before it was paid. (The secret there is that once it's paid, you take the hit. If you cut the guy first, you save the money. If you cut the guy after paying it, too late - you take the hit for it.) Does any of that make sense? I can go through some examples if needed.
Much appreciated Torgo. Thanks. ..Everyone is always helpful. I'm still lost in the world of Google Spreadsheets as far as what all the different functions are. Sometimes I'll make a mistake and have no idea how I did it, and what's worse is, no idea how to fix it. lol! Just little annoying things, but I usually figure it out eventually.
