Oakland has decided to change direction. We rescind the $19m offer to Trent Brown... Previous bid of $17m for Trent Brown by the NY Jets is back in play...
About the right value for him too...I had him pegged around the $13.5M per year value, no where near the $17M per year that he got.
Since the current CBA was signed, I feel like we’ve seen this kind of thing escalate a bit every year. It’s really kind of expanded the gap between teams willing to spend and those who prefer to be shrewd. At least that’s how it seems to me. Those that spend throw all the rookie savings at veterans. The irony is in the end they still suffer from dead cap issues. Just now it’s created from a different source. Also, it’s starting to feel like no one is untouchable. It’s a player movement buffet every offseason.
The current CBA has created a bunch of problems -- the biggest of which is it actually has affected the quality of the games. Less practice time means less time to work on fundamentals like tackling technique and offensive line play. But it also created this crazy situation where the NFL "middle class" is repaidly disappearing. All those extra cap dollars are going to the few names that sign big contracts on the first day or two of free agency. It isn't actually bringing up the salaries of everyone -- just inflating the top end numbers completely out of control. The Giants (before making all their moves this offseason) were a rediculous example of it. They had like 5 players whose cap number was greater than 10% of the teams cap! How do you build the rest of the roster when like 60% of your cap goes to 5 guys -- and one of them is a 38 year old QB who you won't cut because it would be awkward some day when he gets inducted into the ring of honor...
Well the 60% to five guys thing is interesting. You see it moreso on the teams whose GM is afraid to play chicken with star players. The top players DO get more. And each teams stars sell tickets to the fans. That’s where the politics come in. And a GMs fear of losing a guy who goes on to be great elsewhere. Take the championship Seahawks; they had a great team on rookie deals. Then when the cheap deals were up they had to pick the “core” guys to keep. Wilson, Wagner, Sherman, Thomas, and Kam all got paid. Eventually they had to move one, two guys to field a team. Unless you’re batting 90% in every draft, which being honest no one can on a regular basis. That’s why the middle class disappears. So I think we both agree here Xinik. In the Giants case, it was probably half keeping core guys, and half politics/ticket sales (OBJ). Didn’t help that your drafts were hitting 50% at best and bad coaches were brought in.
