I agree with that. Bo Jackson is a hard one. He definitely had elite ability. But the on field results were not elite. Injuries and so on. But a healthy Bo Jackson was certainly elite. The problem is we saw a healthy Bo Jackson for only very small periods.

MD Perry was really, really good. I wish the Bears would have had him instead of his lard ass brother.

Lol I love how everyone focused on the part where I said being in the hall does not make you elite and ignores where I give the perfect example of joe namath.

    Some other examples
    Dan Hampton
    Henry Carson
    Bob Griese

I won't argue whether Namath is elite but I do think he's a HOFer. He had a big impact on the gsme before injuries derailed him. He threw for 4000 yds when no one else did and it wasn't until 1979 when Fouts did it again.

I'm fine with anyone thinking he shouldn't be there but what's 60s football without Broadway Joe?

Good lord man. It's probably a good idea to stay out of the NFL Fall of Fame if you're going to try and single out individual players so you can term them "non-elite". WTH are you talking about? This only warrants a response because it's so absurd....I have no idea where you are going with this, but trying to prove your horrible example as "perfect", by listing other horrible examples is not the way. lol! I'm just sayin...

    Bob Griese
    Not elite???

    Dan Hampton

    not elite???

    Henry Carson
    not elite???

    Joe Namath

    not elite???

    Ridiculous...

I didn't ignore it.....I even used Hampton as an example myself.

I love the Danimal. Truly one of my favorite players ever.

But compared to the guys that played at the same time as he did....I have a hard time saying he was elite.

    Why, is the question?

Six times Dan Hampton was voted 1st or 2nd team All-Pro..Four times on the first team!. WTH does a guy have to do?

The guy is a starter on the ALL DECADE team. lol! Gotta say, I'm shocked by your take on this one...

I don't know...maybe I'm wrong and he is elite. But when I think back to the late 70s through the 1980s....there were so many really good defensive tackles in the game. It was a golden era of defensive line play, IMO.

Hamp did make the all 80s team. But I also think he benefited from playing on the defense he did. I don't know. I could be wrong here. Or I'm just too hard on him.

I thought that mid 80s Bears defense had two truly elite players. Mike Singletary and Richard Dent. And they had really good players in Hampton, Michael, and Marshall. And then a crop of guys like Fencik, Frazier, and Otis Wilson that were simply just good and knew their role really well.

Randy White, Joe Greene, and Alan Page all had great players around them too...

    Very true.

I could certainly be wrong on this and be wrong about Hampton. But I don't think every HOF player is automatically also an elite player. I think elite is something different.

One of my favorite defensive lineman of the 70's and 80's was Lyle Alzado...Of course, we found out later he was juicing throughout his career, but he was a mean S.O.B. on the football field...

  15. TopDawg Legend

I think you would have a very difficult time making that case...Or even finding an example. How would a player get voted into the HoF without being elite?

  16. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

Was always on my list of players I hated.

Let's first agree that a player being elite or not isn't objective.....this is a very subjective subject, complete opinion. Or do you not agree?

And then I'd ask.....how many players at a given position can be considered elite? There are 32 starting left tackles in the NFL, disregarding injuries, how many...in your opinion (Not naming names, just theoretically) could be considered elite before the word elite loses meaning?

  19. gidion72 Legend Steelers

There doesn’t have to be any elite players at a certain position at all times. But there could be a time where a certain position might be loaded with so many elite players they can’t even all be all-pro.

I think for starters, 1st and 2nd team all-pro, warrants elite status ...That's players and coaches vote.
