We don't have to play these stupid hypotheticals... Go away now, or add something to an actual football conversation.

Even though I am a Republican, I rarely agree with a President Trump statement, but this is "Fake News"

How about some Good News......... a week has passed and there are no stories about a Browns player, being pulled over for speeding, holding a weapon, accused of possession or even intoxication, no one had a crazy social media pic floating in a pool with a rubber duckie, or flashing cash surrounded by showgirls.

It may seem like a small thing, but when's the last time we weren't playing that some stupid story didn't appear out of no where. Even the national sports press has backed off the "so Browns" take on the coaching changes made, seeming to reccognize that H&H show was a chit show.

Now the question is: can Williams get back the energy and focus to tame the Kittens in their litter box?

They could hire a 5-year old... just win, baby!

Also, low key, I'd jump ship sooner if they hired Jim Schwartz, Jeff Fisher, or some other ex-NFL re-tread.

Got it. So the rules against hitting QBs count unless:
    • You're an air-raid quarterback from Texas (Mahomes, Mayfield)

    • You're Cam Newton

If you're a strong leader, I don't think it should matter. A head coach should be a CEO. They should have coordinators and coaches in place under them to make the right decisions. I don't think its a fair assumption to say that Rice knows nothing about football but it is fair to point out her lack of FOOTBALL coaching.

If it wasn't football nobody would blink at this. Also if it wasn't an African American woman, nobody would blink at this.

It's actually a great leadership tactic to bring in people with different backgrounds. Leaders can lead no matter what it is. Real leaders know people, know how to motivate people.

Now would it necessarily work? I don't think so, I think a FO position would be more suited for her. But, hell, Sashi Brown was around the NFL for a decade and responsible for helping with key football decisions yet people acted as if he never saw a football before he was named GM and was just a bean counter...

GMs don’t have to know how to teach a player technique, coaches need a firm hold on all aspects of the game. I have no problem with a woman coach, because I know it will happen. Aren’t there woman owners in the league? I’m sure one of them will push this envelope some day soon.

    The "problem" isn't that she's a woman...

The "PROBLEM" is, she has no experience in the league, therefore she has no network to put a staff together. Whether she has the knowledge to "help" the coordinators with the X's and O's is irrelevant at this point. You need someone that will demand respect of the rooms, both coaches and players. Someone with absolutely no prior dealing with a staff on any level of football will not work as a NFL HC...imho

Still looking for Oprah. Great points on the requisite experience, background and skill set. A Head Coach is after all a "Coach". It helps to have been in the industry, know a few people, and to know what you are coaching.

Your points on leadership are actually more applicable to the president than to a Head Coach. Presidents can come from business, academia, military, medicine, etc.... provided they can lead, they can be president.

Not so much a Head Coach, IMO.

Not necessarily in this case, but we can't just assume that because someone isn't in the business that they don't know what theyre coaching. Coaching requires 80+ hour weeks. Missing out on family events, kids growing up, etc. That's not for everyone. You can be a fan and know the game, there may be a learning curve because you haven't played, then worked your way through the ranks as a player development asst, quality control, assistant position coach, position coach, coordinator, etc, it just doesn't necessarily mean you don't know the game.

Let's jump to another avenue...In this coaching search, should we interview Joe Thomas? He has been around the game during the majority of his life. He has played at a Hall of Fame level. He knows the ins and outs of a locker room, has the respect of the players and coaches. SHOULD he be elevated to a NFL Head Coaching job at this point of his career?

    Not a HC, IMHO, yet..........

I believe he would still need to cut his teeth at various coaching positions until he gets some experience and has a better grasp of the "whole picture" that a HC needs to control. I grant that he is probably more than qualified and able but I think he would need just a little polish.

    Exactly!!

Which is why condi Rice is immediately eliminated from HC talk...Experience IN the coaching realm...or lack there of

So this actually brings up an interesting point, specific to the Browns: what's the org. structure look like?

Hue Jackson said in his outgoing comments (so take it for what it was) that he "wasn't able" to take back playcalling from Haley at all because of "the way the organization was setup". Which would imply that Todd Haley reported directly to Jimmy Haslam.

We already know that the head coach in Cleveland doesn't report to the GM, that both persons report directly to the owner. If this is also true, that a coordinator could also be given that direct line, then the experience or lack thereof of the head coach really isn't an issue.

By all accounts, Haslam has setup his structure to mimic a business where his executive leadership team is composed of the GM, the analytics guys (Andrew Berry, Paul DePodesta - can't forget them!), the head coach, and possibly coordinators. In such a structure, the head coach would be responsible for essentially the 53-man roster, the 46-man active, and "rallying the troops". Dorsey would be responsible for drafting, singing, trading, and other player transactions. Analytics would do their thing. The coordinators would be mostly autonomous and therefore, would be the more crucial hires.

I'm not saying this is right, or I agree with the approach, but Haslam has not shown an inclination to change.

    In that world?

HC: Condi Rice (why the hell not)
    OC: John DeFilippo
    DC: Gregg Williams

I love Joe Thomas, but he himself has indicated he wasn't interested in coaching "at this time", and I think he truly wants some time to himself and his family. I just don't think he's ready to commit the intense time, energy and focus yet. He may come to want that in a year or so, but for now I think he'd be better off to take the time to sort out where his next chapter leads.

We all know he'd like a media position, and that may be where he goes next, though I don't think national media is likely, he certainly could get work in the Cleveland market, to see if it suits him. He's a very likeable guy, and will never have to buy a drink again in Brown town, so I expect he will stay local, and always be a part of the Browns in the hearts and minds of the fans.

You are all missing the point, I wasn't asking if we should talk Joe Thomas into being a candidate, I was showing that, even if he were, HE is not yet qualified to be a HC in this league...which is why Condi is not a real candidate for the job. The national media made something nonsensical into a talking piece of reported reality... By Adam Schefter no less...
