I'm missing where it matters who is on the field when the point is that he was wide open. If it were "Coleman dropped the heavily contested pass in man coverage with a safety coming downhill", then I would see the point.
I think Gid was emphasizing how worthless Coleman is... he was spooked by subs. In the game of football, it really doesn’t matter who’s on the field, but I think Gid was attempting to help prove the FO’s point (former 1st for a 7th).
First round receivers drafted 2012 - 2017: 2012: Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd, Kendall Wright, A.J. Jenkins 2013: Tavon Austin, DeAndre Hopkins, Cordarrelle Patterson 2014: Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Odell Beckham, Kelvin Benjamin 2015: Amari Cooper, Kevin White, DeVante Parker, Nelson Agholor, Breshad Perriman, Philip Dorsett 2016: Corey Coleman, Will Fuller, Josh Doctson, Laquon Treadwell 2017: Corey Davis, Mike Williams, John Ross Methinks it's time to stop drafting wide receivers in the first round. Toss out 2014 - the exception to the rule - and you get 20 players, 20 combined years played, 769 games played and they produced: 3.0 catches per game, 38.2 yards per game, and 0.2 touchdowns per game total. Or 407.4 yards per season per receiver. Only DeAndre Hopkins (Top 5 receiver) and Amari Cooper have turned into anything - averaging 1,173.0 yards per season and 7.0 TDs (Hopkins) and 967.7 yards per season and 6.0 TDs.
Some: "Hahahaha... the Browns won ZERO games last season... what makes you think they can win NINE now?!" Me: Also... as hard as it might be to believe, I think Coleman's in a worse QB situation now in Buffalo. Ouch.
I know management denies it, but I feel like they are counting on Josh playing this season. Also wonder why Coleman was so worthless as chip. There has to be more to this than, he just wasn't improving enough. When Jarvis Landry came aboard, I was thrilled. I thought, now we have a veteran, top level guy to show the youngsters how to become NFL recievers, and impress on them the opportunity they have in front of them. I was hoping both Josh and Calloway would man up and put the immaturity and weakness behind them. Maybe it's too much to ask of a guy, but that's what I was hoping for. I gotta admit that the disappearance of Gordon, and he Calloway idiocy, have severely dampened my excitement for the upcoming season. Visions of a scary offensive line up, have rapidly diminished. Still hopeful, but feeling like the cracks in the dike are already forming. Let's hope Tyrod, Landry, Chubb, and Duke can make it work. Those guys, I trust. Njoku has me worried, WR in general is MIA, and we've tinkered with the O line in ways the staff clearly wanted to avoid. Not a recipe for a juggernaut. Some one talk me off the ledge.
Here goes: Until he fails a drug test, Josh Gordon is a guy who can suit up and dramatically improve our receiving corp. It may not be wise to rely on him for a full 16 games, but he's mercurial talent who's easily one of our Top 3 talents. I remain optimistic that he's going to play when the games count. Callaway, certainly an idiot, is still penciled in as a starter and we'll see him in live action against another team (NYG) tomorrow. Talent helps put up with headaches. If he's a first round talent, as he's been billed, it will be apparent and, again, while it's tough to rely on him for a full 16 if this becomes a habit, it's worth riding the ups and downs for now. Tyrod to Jarvis looks special. We have three capable starters at running back and should be able to rotate them through the lineup with an effective coordinator (Haley) who won't abandon the run at the first sign of panic. Njoku needs time on the Juggs machine. However, with potential targets: Landry, Gordon, Callaway, Hyde/Johnson/Chubb, DeValve, Higgins... there are only a finite amount of balls Tyrod can throw per game. He'll get there. Just my two cents.
So, you have to ask yourself, is he playing for a contract and used this as an opportunity to skip chances of injury leading up to the preseason? If so, when will he be up to speed enough that he isn't a detriment to the team? He will already miss the first preseason game, and I have some major doubts whether he will be ready for Buffalo either. He will be up to speed right around the usual dress rehearsal 3rd preseason game. No matter, I look forward to him coming back as long as his health is in good shape. At the end of the day, this is just a game and I wouldn't wish anyone to play a game that hurts their personal health, whether it be physical or mental.
Im not too concerned. The main guys play about 2 total games worth of pre-season snaps. People miss camp for injuries all the time too. He played last year and was learning the playbook. He spent the off season continuing to learn and build chemistry with other offensive players, and he is training now. IF he gets in during the next 10 days I think he is fine. As long as he doesn't come back and they just force feed him the ball then it will be alright. This team has much more skill than the last time he came back. Worst case : Flash has a little bit of rust and takes a few games to get into "game shape". The good news is Rusty Flash > half the league.
Dez leaves me torn. I "think" he can help, but I also think he could hurt. That's a BIG personality, to bring into a team, and I don't want a guy who's going to pressure our QBs for more targets. I really like Landry as a professional leader, but without Gordon to draw the deep cover, can he be effective? Probaly, but how much more effective with Gordon on the field? Calloway impressed last night, but the foolishness he demonstrated with the idiotic 3AM driving without a liscense, while "holding", worries me a lot. I realize the new league rules will give him enough rope, to stay in uniform, if he wises up, but his "story/excuse" - the dog ate my homework, c'mon man. The question marks on Gordon and Calloway, make Dez's potential downside feel acceptable, but I'm
It wasn’t the driving without a license and weed that got him in trouble, it was running a stop sign. He would have been fine if he just observed the traffic laws. If you know that your license is suspended why drive in a way that will get you pulled over? He belongs on the dumb ass of the day thread.
Nothing good happens 3 o'clock in the morning. Especially in the middle of your first NFL training after dropping 3 rounds in the draft because of being an idiot.
@SAS I have a task for you. I'm too lazy and you like to track the stats. I'd like to see a rolling stat track of former Browns QB's and the top drafted rookie QB's during this preseason. And should you choose to take this on, thank you in advance. And if you don't, I'm extremely disappointed in you.
