Without question one of the most accurate passers ever....That guy knew how to read a defense. He had to, because he was as stationary as it gets. Kosar was pretty amazing QB...

Allow me to make myself crystal clear . . .

I am NOT unhappy about Baker Mayfield being a Cleveland Brown. I simply don't think he was head and shoulders, far and away the best QB prospect in the class. They each had their pros and cons and, IMHO, each would have developed into top tier NFL QB's given the proper development.

Here's my issue in Readers Digest form. If you suck bad enough to "earn" the number 1 overall pick in the draft, why wouldn't you take the consensus best player in the draft?

Case in point: Flashback to one year ago. The Browns had the number 1 overall pick then, as well. Your boy, Sashi, took the best player in the draft even though the need for a QB was arguably even greater at that point in time as there was no Tyrod Taylor on the roster. The early returns on Garrett (even with his early ankle injury) seem to indicate that he was, in fact, the correct pick. (Sashi's fate was sealed when he passed on one of the other top QB prospects in order to squirrel away future draft assets.)

So, tell me what the difference is from last year to this year? Other than the fact that THIS year, the Browns had not one but TWO veteran QB's already on the roster - and - owned another pick only three picks later . . . What's so different? Dorsey could have and should have drafted the best player in the draft and doubled back three picks later and STILL got one of the top QB's in the draft.

Instead, virtually every off season move involved a CB. So we burn the #4 pick on yet another CB? Don't get me wrong. Ward is a very talented CB. But he will do absolutely NOTHING to improve the offense and, make no mistake, the offensive side of the ball is where this team needs to make drastic improvement just to become competitive.

Let's just go back to our opener last season. Do you remember what Antonio Brown did to us? What AJ Green has been doing to us for years? Our secondary has been a joke, and clearly John Dorsey has prioritized it. What did we watch all year long last year? WR's running free through our secondary. Getting shredded by QB's like Jacoby Brissett...The pick makes total sense to me. And did people really think that the Browns were going to just settle for what's left of the QB's at #4? I can't imagine...You'd have to love all 4 QB's to do that. Pretty unrealistic IMO.

Yes, TD. I remember our opener last year . . . Vividly. I also remember that our punt unit put us in a 7 point hole - early. Get one, repeat ONE, fucking 1st down from the offense and the score is still 0-0. I also know that Dorsey spent a lot of time trying to upgrade the secondary over the off season.

  5. Would the Browns be better w Chubb and Josh Jackson or Ward and Harold Landry? Your right Ward was probably the highest ranked DB but to say it wasn't close is kinda crazy....Alexander, Jackson and Hughes all had more production as Ward had only 2 Ints in his career

  6. They just used FA to get 3 new DBs....also the DC puts the DBs in terrible position w a crowded box and blitzing like crazy

My take on that Lym is that there are too many QB needy teams in the NFL nowadays. And there seem to be fewer quality QB's coming out of college in the last decade or so. The talents these QB's have had to run these college systems hasn't translated too well to the NFL. It's also become more of a "start the rookie QB now" league with a high percentage failing or floundering. With the rookie salary caps in place, it has made it much easier to eat a rookie contract if the new QB is a bust. Remember how ridiculous the salaries were becoming before this "fix"? With that said, there are more than enough teams that will trade up and take that risky QB if our team doesn't. It really has become a ridiculous scramble for any semblance of QB talent. Too few teams have the luxury of drafting a QB and letting him sit and learn for a few years anymore since it's a "win-now" league.

Sashi got the boot because his method was too long-scoped. The team had a big turnover and he stockpiled the picks while clearing cap space for when he made the plunge. Took more than 2 years though and the griping of what could have been if only they had drafted so and so. This may have been the year Sashi would have jumped but I think next season would have been his big splash and Haslam (and today's fan base are just too impatient). Now Dorsey gets to reap the benefits of the cap room and draft picks

Sorry this so long, but that's why I'm thinking they grabbed Mayfield instead of best player to help now. Tyrod, who would appear better than any QB they've had since the 1999 return, is only a couple of years fix and they'd be in this situation again in a couple of years, but with a slightly better record and a later draft pick and having to sell the farm to move up.

Nobody like Ward...Ya gotta go to DB-U to get that.

I hear what you're saying, Duff. But just do the math.

You have 4 top QB's in the draft and only 2 picks that separate your 1st and 2nd pick. Take the consensus best player in the draft first and you STILL have, at worst, your choice of TWO of the top rated QB's in the class.

"There is no reason to"? This board was talking about hand sizes, at one point, and there's no reason to discuss the offensive system that your number one overall pick played in? Come on, now.

He flourished in an offense that saw him running triple options and power QB draws. He won't be doing that in the NFL. He was throwing to open receivers in the flats and on crossing routes, thanks to the system. Like I said, I like a lot of things about him, but the conversations on this board never honed in on the really important, critical points. All I'm saying is, it might be time to come to grips with them.

I think he's one of three QB's in this draft that have a chance to really work out for a franchise, and I think you can see that going back beyond just this past year. I hope he does work out for the Browns. But now that he's the pick, some realistic discussions have to take place.
Speaking for myself, I won't insult you if you bring something worthy to the table. For a lot of us, that's the case. And, regardless, even if you're called a name or two, you're going to get a real football discussion, without anyone running away. The problem is, as can be the case here, most people pop on with the intent to make an attack, or display their total lack of football intelligence. In those cases... yeah, it can get ugly. But bring something legitimate to the table, and you'll be met with a real, continued discussion.

Personally, I'm in your camp with QB's being somewhat of a crapshoot. I'd have been fine with Chubb or Barkley or whoever was BPA at #1 and getting the #2 or #3 rated QB. But you have to remember the average fan these days has the attention span of a gnat. They aren't in it for the long haul, they don't remember the glory years, they don't care except for "what have you done for me lately" with a "win-now" attitude that the NFL has to mine to sell tickets and merchandise.

What you and I think the prudent approach is getting a bit too cutesie.......and similar to what got Sashi canned (AKA not quite "in the market yet" or not a franchise QB/trade down/draft other players). I can just hear Dorsey getting lambasted by the media and fans for not going with his top QB at #1 and settling for scraps. I know to long time fans that appearance doesn't count for much, but the fans won't keep buying tickets without instant results and it hurts Haslam's/the NFL's bottom line.

Basically, the world of sports has changed to this "short attention span theater" (Anybody else remember that show on the Comedy Channel?). For phuques sakes, they want baseball to get faster because it's "too boring" for today. My response is "There is no frickin' clock so phuque off! You don't like it, watch something else." But it doesn't matter what we want, it's the almighty $$$$$$ that is dictating why things are what they are now.

Sashi got the boot because his method didn't work. In a league where teams can go from less than a handful of wins to a conference championship in the span of a year, or vice versa, there's plenty of room for a team to get things right now and get back into it. Sashi treated the Browns' rebuild like that of a tanking NBA, MLB, or NHL team. You don't need to do that in the NFL.

Brown was at the helm for a team that got one win in two years. How anyone can make excuses for him baffles me.

Those teams weren't as devoid of actual talent as the Browns have been. Nor have the had the turnover in coaching and front office and both offensive and defensive systems. How many other teams have changed their moving parts out every 2-3 years for over a decade now? That's right, you can say it.....NONE!!!!

Sashi's system was similar to how John Hart turned the Indians around back in the early 90's that led to over a decade of a team consistently being one of the best in baseball. It works well when given more than the time he was given. But I suppose your short sightedness will lay all the praise at Dorsey's feet in a year or two.

    (sigh)

  15. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Teams have changed coaching staffs off the backs of <5 win seasons and gone on to success. Staff turnover isn't to blame. If you're blaming it on the talent, then what's the explanation for one win in two seasons? Presumably, Sashi drafted talent, right? Why only one win?

You tried to refute my point about the NFL being different than other leagues by using an MLB example... If Dorsey drafts real talent and puts the team in position to succeed, he should get the praise. Sashi got the team extra draft picks and one win. Unless his roster moves prove to be the reason this team wins, he should be considered an abject failure.

  16. Duff_Beer_Doug Franchise Player Browns Indians C&D Club

Sashi purged quite a bit from the roster, players that were still quite useful. Adding a few starters thru two drafts wasn't going to replace those guys and upgrade the lack of overall talent. I don't see where you keep missing that. Stop getting hung up on laying this on Sashi and the fact that "other teams have done it."

P.S. Thanks for hijacking the thread by the way. How about getting back to the 2018 draft?

  18. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

Wait, Sashi got rid of useful talent, and the team only winning one game isn't his fault?

Again, why is a 5-year, "We don't win more than one game for two years" strategy necessary in the NFL? It hasn't proven to be, anywhere else. It's an awfully convenient strategy for someone to say, "Don't get upset at me if we suck total balls, because we'll be good eventually". I wish I could say that to my boss.

Ryan Pace got rid of Brandon Marshall and Martellus Bennett, and let Alshon Jeffery walk. He has spent a lot of money and wasted a lot of draft capital trying to replace those guys. This team hasn't had capable receiving options since their departure. We shouldn't look at that and say, "Well, he got rid of aging players that cost a lot of money, and even though we sucked in the meantime, we're going to be better shortly!". We should say, "He jettisoned useful talent, and struggled to fill the team with talent, otherwise. We are worse now than we were before. That's bad". Why that's so hard to say about Sashi for Browns fans is hard to understand.
