Well Porcello didn’t have much to do with it but this went well. Getting to 3-1 before they had to see Verlander again was huge.
https://www.cbssports.com/live/should-jose-altuve-been-called-out-due-to-fan-interference/1332758/ wow you guys didn't comment on this. should Alltuve be out for fan interference ? this is huge... the outfieler has a piece of it, but the fan's hand touches his glove and the ball. i don't know the exact rules on this. surprised they called him out.
I'm leaning toward the call being right because I think by the backside angle that the guy in the blue shirt touched Mookie before his glove was over the fence, but I concede it's not a perfectly conclusive angle. The guy in the orange shirt was definitely reaching over at one point, not sure whether he still was when he touched Betts' glove. I would agree there's no conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the field. If it had been called a HR on the field, the Sox would've appealed and it would've remained a HR, because it would've been just as inconclusive whether he was touched before his glove was over the fence or not. There was unquestionably all kinds of contact after his glove was over the fence, which would not be interference...the only doubt is whether there was any contact before he went over. Admittedly I'm biased, but I think there was. edit - and the funny thing is West talked after the game about the contact that closed Betts' glove being on the play side of the fence, but I think that was pretty clearly after he went over, but I still think Country Joe may have somewhat inadvertently gotten it right lol.
to me - a question is when can a fan get involved? the ball height is clearly above the wall and over the HR line marker aka the top of the fence. the 2 fans didn't reach downward to catch it. they went for it as the ball was nearing them in the stands. i understand Betts has a right to the ball too, but you got 3 people going for 1 ball that is clearly above the wall. when do fans have a right to the ball? only when it's above and clearly out of the playing field? tough call regardless. i would argue Betts' glove is leaning over the wall and towards the fans as his momentum carried him that far, so to me the ball is out of the field of play. if Betts was a shorter player, they probably wouldn't even reach it that high and the fans get it easily. he makes an incredible play to jump that high for it and almost gets it if not for the fans hitting the ball and his glove.
From the official rules: "Spectator interference occurs when a spectator reaches out of the stands, or goes on the playing field, and (1) touches a live ball or (2) touches a player and hinders an attempt to make a play on a live ball" Once a player reaches over a barrier, all bets are supposed to be off per the rules. So the only question should be whether any of those fans touched Betts before his glove went over the fence. The guy in the collared shirt on the right is clearly reaching over, but never touches Betts or the ball. The guy in the red shirt on the left is clearly not reaching over. Blue shirt guy and orange shirt guy between them both touched Betts and orange shirt guy also touched the ball and are somewhere in between those two...where the touching occurs in relation to the fence is what's up for debate (I think orange shirt touching the ball is pretty clearly over the fence, but did he contact Betts on the play side? Not sure. He unquestionably was reaching over the fence at one point before Betts got there).
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...-says-its-about-the-worst-call-hes-ever-seen/ the guy in the orange shirt speaks. to me he is right, he doesn't tough the glove of Betts. however the guy in the dark grey shirt clearly touches his glove. but again, his glove is well over the yellow line and leaning towards the fans as his momentum carried him that far. when can a fan go for it? they didn't reach below the yellow line or the wall. the ball was clearly above both the wall and the yellow line ???
u dog when u say "reach over," i assume you mean the wall ? i think they aren't doing that. they are trying to catch it as it is coming towards them and almost hits the guy in the chest. if you fictitiously took out those 3 fans and betts the ball would land in row 1 or probably row 2 or 3 cleanly. that's why i don't think they are leaning over the wall like Jeffery Maier did in the O's-Yankees playoff game 20 or so years ago. Maier clearly reached over. these fans are waiting to catch it and Betts' glove goes into the stands and their hands hit Betts' glove in a collusion. i would hate to be a Astros fan and not get that call and lose 8-6. now they must win 3 in a row to advance. bummer.
But did they reach forward of the yellow line? Looks to me like they did, which puts them in the field of play. If they touched Betts before his glove went on to the fan side, it's interference. Did they? Not sure, but I think they might have.
there is a side camera which shows them not doing that and Betts's arm and glove going over the line and bending towards the fans. that's the best angle CBS showed. to me Betts' glove is above the yellow line and wall when he collided with the fans. the fans never reached below the wall or yellow line. they didn't have to as the ball was coming right towards them as they were standing. if Betts' glove isn't there it hits the 1 fan in the hands or the other one in the stomach.
This is a screen grab I paused this at the point blue shirt guy's arm makes contact with Mookie's glove...the ball's not even in the frame yet...can you tell me with certainty where everyone's hands are in relation to the fence? Remember the top of the fence is in play so the fans have to be completely behind it.
u dog i stopped this seconds from your clip. the ball is at the right ear of the guy in the white shirt. that's the point of impact with the fans. to me betts' glove is even with the wall if he went continuously towards the sky. the fan in the blue shirt may have his fingers over the wall if it was straight up but it's very very close. i think the tips of his hands, both hands are over the wall if he went straight up. it's not as bad at it first looked. i thought Betts' went further into the crowd. i was mistaken.
