2018 Free Agent Bids

Special Exemption decided by the commissioners:
Drew Brees negotiates an extension with the Saints before his contract voids.
$23.5M cap hit in 2018 with a $60M dead cap. The current $6M dead cap is factored in as negotiated into the entire contract.

We feel this is more than fair and that the estimate may even be on the high side. We could not have Brees become a FA due to our rules preventing extensions, resulting in an $18M dead cap hit on the Saints.

 

This is a great idea.

However, can I ask whether bids are still allowed on RFAs? Its unlikely that many of them would get a bid over $6m, but the deadline for signing them to an offer sheet is something like the 20th/21st. Isn't there a risk that the deadline for signing their tender hits before they have the chance to be bidded on?

 

We'll allow them soon don't worry. Not for the first few days though.

There's no way to properly reflect this in our exercise.

 

$23.5m for Brees does seem a bit low, especially when he's already been paid $18m of it from a signing bonus on his previous deal. Wouldn't that mean that for that cap hit, he'd only get paid $5.5m this year (or, this being the Saints, he probably gets paid $4.5m base salary and $1m of signing bonus. However, that signing bonus is the prorated portion of $25m on a 25 year deal, which will actually void after 2, because they have the most creative ways to mess up their future cap).

Beees can't be tagged by rule. By letting Brees go to FA the Saints lose 18M of cap and their QB. It is certainly not bogus when it is certainly not happening and going to leave him completely out to dry.

Also it the new figure isn't 18M plus salary. It is only 6M and salary plus that 6M would likely be reduced. So we didn't guess the salary but the likely cap hit for 2018. The dead cap would be very high though. That's why we have that set at 60M.
