Also, good read on the Garoppolo thing. Amazing this writer can see through the bullsh*t whereas our local media seems to think he's the next Tom Brady coming to save our franchise: Cleveland Browns: Why Are Patriots So Eager To Deal Jimmy Garoppolo? EDIT:
Not a problem, Sammy. If anything . . . That article eased my mind a bit. 1. It's ESPN. The click bait monger kings. 2. If you read the rest of their "predictions ", it obvious the entire article isn'the intended to be taken seriously.
lol! Hyperbole at it's finest. "betting their future on him"..C'mon..Everything I've read about Garoppolo says he is a true pro that prepares every week like he's the starter. At the end of the day, he's still just a prospect at this point. One that has worked side by side with the G.O.A.T. for the last three years, and under the greatest coach of all time, no less... I don't think any NFL team is looking at Garoppolo as a proven commodity. The Browns have a ton of draft picks. Trading one of them away for Garoppolo wouldn't be gambling away our future. All that matters is improving the football team. This writer is missing the obvious. Nobody has ever taken care of himself like Tom Brady, and he's not slowing down. The Patriots know they have value in JG, and see an opportunity to improve their team by trading a guy that won't start as long as Brady is there. JG is coming up on his second contract. It's a business... It's a unique situation that doesn't come along often, but none of this would even be discussed if the Pats weren't content with the QB they selected last year,( Jacoby Brissett) at back up, which they obviously are...
Patrick Mahomes II 6'3" 230 pounds Junior Pros: It starts with prototypical size, where he's listed at 6'3" and 230 pounds. He has an NFL-arm... one that scouts fall in love with. I would expect him to rank among the highest velocity throwers at both this year's combine, and overall, as you might expect from the son of a former MLB pitcher. Functional mobility, but not a run threat. He offers the same kind of arm strength to push the ball downfield that Hue Jackson fell in love with in Robert Griffin (and sought after in Colin Kaepernick). Not afraid to use that arm strength underneath to fit passes into tight windows either, but this leads to a bit of that "gunslinger" mentality and causes too many turnovers. Cons: Definitely a project. His footwork is crap and he comes from a very simple offensive system where he isn't asked to read defenses. Plays exclusively from the shotgun and most of the time is only processing one or two reads. When he's on, he's fantastic but when he's off, his accuracy suffers and he turns the ball over. Mobile, but not a great run threat like a Deshaun Watson. Looks to pass when routes and protection break down but is too easily captured by faster defenders (see his 2015 game against LSU). Isn't likely to break any QB rushing records. Despite being listed at 230, he doesn't have a very well-defined physique that looks almost like it's still got baby-fat on it (he'll only be 21 to start the season). Bottom Line: He made the right decision unlike a couple other juniors in this class to declare because the Red Raiders simply do not produce successful NFL QB's. The faster he can get out and into the hands of a competent coaching staff, the better. Still, there has to be some concern about the program's history. I see this as one of those players Hue falls in love with. He's got all the tools physically to succeed, it's just the question of is he coachable and can it be fixed? He'll fail if he's asked to start early because he'll fall back into those old habits and ruin him quickly. If he's able to sit for a year or more and learn to refine his techniques, I think he can be special. Comparison: Johnny Manziel Final Thought: Beyond sharing the same hometown, Mahomes displays a lot of the same traits as No. 2. He's not nearly as mobile or elusive with the football, but he offers a much stronger arm and best of all, head on his shoulders. Will the Browns have the patience to take a guy somewhat early (he'll likely need to be a second round pick) and bury him on the depth chart? They were forced to start Kessler as a rookie due to injuries, so this move only makes sense if there is a bridge guy brought in (Tyrod Taylor, Colin Kaepernick) to "keep the seat warm". Pretty. He doesn't even get his feet set for this throw but makes it look effortless.
Re: Mahomes... A better comp might be a "mobile Matt Stafford". This guy has the same kind of arm talent I saw in Stafford his final year at Georgia. Definitely not as refined a passer, but can make any throw effortlessly.
I think they mean spots in the QB room. I feel bad for Cody Kessler. He's Colt McCoy 2.0. PS: Nice title.
I agree, quite honestly..It is more because I don't believe in any of the QBs available than it is that I think Kessler is a QB of the future. I think Hue gave Kessler a mission to get more throws downfield, and he failed miserably. He thrived in many other aspects, but he was unwilling to throw it down field further so that Hue could get a good read on his arm. So, that may be the end of the line for Kessler, possible Browns future starter and the beginning of Kessler, 2017 2nd string/2018 3rd string. I think what is going to happen is this..Aaron Goldhammer, whom I can't stand talked about something on ESPNCleveland this morning that could actually be pretty close to reality... The Bills are not going to guarantee Tyrod Taylor's contract. They have asked him to restructure in order to give up the guaranteed money in order to stay with the Bills. He would still be able to earn that money back, but the following are being taken into account: 2017 Option: $15.5M Option Bonus & $12M base salary & $3.25M of his 2018 salary fully guarantee on 3/11/2017 Remaining $9.75M of 2018 salary becomes fully guaranteed on the 3rd league day of 2018 They want him to write off those guarantees that go into effect on March 11...He and his agent are refusing. So the expectancy is that the Bills will cut Taylor before March 11. It is being reported that the Browns really like Deshaun Watson, who is a very similar to Tyrod Taylor, but at a higher level in college. So, the conversation went that bringing in Taylor who is considered a healthy alternative to RGIII, would allow Hue Jackson to run the type of offense he planned for RGIII, still draft Watson and they could develop an offense built around two similar QBs. I'm not in love with this idea, as I think both QBs have their limitations..but honestly, it wouldn't bother me too much if they did, because I think it would give the Browns a singular focus on what this offense should look like. Something, neither Josh McCown or even Cody Kessler have the tools to run. I do believe Kessler would still be a valuable backup into the immediate future. The one downside to this idea...I don't believe Watson will be available at the #12 pick...and I really DON'T want to use the #1 pick on him either, so this could backfire in their faces if they bring Taylor in. That said, I think Sam's boy Pat Mahomes could end up being better at this perceived offense than Watson...however, once again, I don't think he will be available at #33...so... This damn QB issue is a royal pain in the ass...not gonna sugar coat it
Hmmm...I read that quote Sam. You seem to have left out the rest of the article. You know, where he heaps praise on Jimmy Garoppolo...In fact, I think the header says it all; McCown Says Jimmy Garoppolo Has Potential To Carry Franchise"...Here's more from McCown; Josh McCown was sad to be released by the Browns Wednesday because he loved it here. But he says if reports are true that the Browns will try to trade for Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo, their future at quarterback is very bright. "I've seen him on tape because we had a common opponent in Miami,'' McCown told cleveland.com Thursday. "He made some high level throws and did some things that would get you excited about his ability to maybe carry a franchise. That's definitely on the tape.'' "I saw some things in Derek Carr early on in the 2014 draft that reminded me of Aaron Rodgers and I thought 'this guy is going to be pretty good,''' McCown said. "I see the same things when I watch Jimmy: quick release, strong arm, athletic. I'm not saying he's Aaron Rodgers, but he's got some traits in the same mold, and he's got tremendous upside.'' "He's gained a wealth of experience from playing with a guy like Tom Brady, so I do think there's a lot of potential there and a chance to be a very special player,'' said McCown. "I certainly see why people would give him an opportunity to come in and be a franchise guy. You can certainly see that and he's making these throws at a high level against NFL talent, so that would get me excited about him for sure.'' McCown said Garoppolo's situation can't be compared to that of former Patriots backup Matt Cassel, because Garoppolo has the superior skill. "When you turn on the tape, one has an elite skillset and one doesn't," he said. "I like Matt and he's a pro quarterback, but Jimmy has a chance to be elite.''
Aaron Rodgers' hand size - 10 1/8" Derek Carr's hand size - 9 1/8" Jimmy Garoppolo's hand size - 9 1/4" Now, neither of these guys are Rodgers, let's say that first and foremost... I do like what Carr has done so far in his young career, but let's remember, after 3 starting seasons, he has a career 61% completion percentage...Cody Kessler(10 7/8"hands) had a 65.6% completion percentage as a rookie...(edit BTW Rodgers career completion is 65% Take it further, his worst games have come in late season 2014, first 4 games 63.1%~last 3 games 49% completion(last 4, 56.7%) 2015, first 4 games 61.7%~last 4 games 54.6% completion 2016, first 4 games 67.5%~last 4 games 56.7% completion Have we seen what Carr does in cold weather yet? I haven't personally, but maybe some of you have some examples of the cold not effecting him at all...
What fortuitous circumstance! I was about to roll out... "Browns Solve the QB Question" Mock Draft 1. Tennessee Titans (f/Cleveland Browns): Myles Garrett, DE Texas A&M The trade-down-focused F/O begins by sacrificing an elite prospect to add more ammunition to a packed draft... with an eye for a QB. 2. San Francisco 49ers: Mitch Trubisky, QB North Carolina 3. Chicago Bears: Jamal Adams, SS Louisiana State 4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jonathan Allen, DT Alabama 5. Cleveland Browns (f/Tennessee Titans, via Los Angeles Rams): Deshaun Watson, QB Clemson Opinions among the NFL are mixed on Watson. Not so among the Browns, where Hue Jackson is reportedly "enamored" with him. Watson is a high risk, high reward kind of guy. Bucky Brooks (NFL Analyst) actually recently compared him to Marcus Mariota and then said he'd be selected between #25 - #40. Really? Mariota has been wildly successful and at #5, I'll take that risk with Watson. Enough arm, mobile in and out of the pocket, accurate, and - most importantly - a leader. 6. New York Jets: Leonard Fournette, RB Louisiana State 7. Los Angeles Chargers: Malik Hooker, FS Ohio State 8. Carolina Panthers: Dalvin Cook, RB Florida State 9. Cincinnati Bengals: Reuben Foster, ILB Alabama 10. Buffalo Bills: Mike Williams, WR Clemson 11. New Orleans Saints: Solomon Thomas, DE Stanford 12. Cleveland Browns (f/Philadelphia Eagles): Marshon Lattimore, CB Ohio State The best "true cornerback" in the class, Lattimore would be a huge boost to any secondary, but especially one like Cleveland's where new DC Williams will ask a lot of his corners in coverage. With Joe Haden's poor performances and Tramon Williams' departure, there's no better chance for a talented rookie to step right into the lineup Day 1 and be a dominant cornerback. 13. Arizona Cardinals: Corey Davis, WR Western Michigan 14. Indianapolis Colts: Cam Robinson, OT Alabama 15. Philadelphia Eagles (f/Minnesota Vikings): Teez Tabor, CB Florida 16. Baltimore Ravens: Jabrill Peppers, S/LB Michigan 17. Washington Redskins: Derek Barnett, DE Tennessee 18. Cleveland Browns (f/Tennessee Titans): O.J. Howard, TE Alabama Unbelievably, none of the teams between #12 and #17 have a major need at the TE spot - will he last this long? I had him at #12 to Cleveland in the previous mock, but if he can make it to #18 in this one, wow. Freakish athlete with great hands, outstanding leaping ability, and a willing blocker. 33. Cleveland Browns: Budda Baker, FS Washington Ball-hawking free safety with the range to take away half a backfield. Incredible as a blitzing safety, recording 9.5 TFLs and 3.0 sacks last season. 51. Cleveland Browns (f/Tennessee Titans): Demarcus Walker, DE Florida State Exploded the last two seasons at FSU recording 33.5 TFLs and 25.0 sacks. There's a lot of upside, but he does wear down in games which leads to taking plays off. His measurements at the Combine will be interesting, he's listed at 6'4" and 280 pounds but looks shorter, stouter, and with smaller arms. Cleveland has to take a chance an edge rusher as they cannot stand pat (especially having passed up Garrett). 65. Cleveland Browns: Pat Elflein, C Ohio State A tough, intelligent, throw-back center. Elflein could be the linchpin this offensive line is/was missing and with a few smaller tweaks (or signing Kevin Zeitler in free agency), this line could rally to become a top unit in relatively little time. Bonus for the (proven) ability to play all the interior line spots. 104. Cleveland Browns: Kareem Hunt, RB Toledo A talented, multi-dimensional running back who keeps shooting up draft boards. Hunt can - and does - do it all. The only question mark in his game is how much beating does he have left? After seeing his absurd fumble rate (one every 856.0 touches), he might be the safest bet at the position in years. 140. Cleveland Browns (supplemental): Daeshon Hall, DE Texas A&M Well, the Browns get an Aggie edge rusher, just not the one everybody suspected. Has to be some concerns why he couldn't produce more than 27.5 TFLs and 10.5 sacks in the past two seasons with offenses keying on his counterpart Garrett. Nevertheless, he's a long, athletic DE who could be developed in Williams' system. 144. Cleveland Browns (supplemental): Josh Dobbs, QB Tennessee Yes, the Browns jockeyed around the board to get Deshaun Watson. Yes, maybe the Browns sign Tyrod Taylor or Colin Kaepernick in free agency. No, that doesn't mean they're set. Josh McCown said it himself: they need to take as many shots as they can. Dobbs is a major project, but has the smarts and work ethic to be developed. He's a dual-threat player who fits the mold of what Hue is evidently looking for. 148. Cleveland Browns: Nazair Jones, DT North Carolina A big, three-technique DT that's suspiciously absent from the current Browns' roster. 181. Cleveland Browns (supplemental): Ejuan Price, OLB Pittsburgh A six-year senior due to two full seasons of injury, Price is a low-risk, high-reward pick. He tallied 42.5 TFLs and 24.5 sacks in his pas two seasons (no missed games), so he bounced back from injury well. Jamie Collins should return to his natural position of ILB in the 4-3, so the OLB spot needs an upgrade from Cam Johnson. 185. Cleveland Browns: Josh Harvey-Clemons, S/LB Louisville Former five-star recruit for Georgia who was dismissed for marijuana violations. A very tall safety (6'4") and a slightly undersized linebacker (228 pounds), so the natural fit at the next level is the hybrid role. Had a down season after a strong 2015 campaign but has at least stayed clean off the field.
I think there's a decent chance that Buffalo lets S. Gilmore walk and not franchise/extend him. Especially if they think Lattimore will still be there at #10, they'll upgrade the position and save money at the same time. The Bills love to draft OSU DB's. I doubt he'll be available at #12.
Not sure why no one is looking at this guy closer so I'll throw his name in the ring... Yup Nathan Peterman. At 6-2 225lbs with 9 7/8" Hands this guy is near the prototypical build for a QB. SEASON CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT RAW QBR ADJ QBR 2016 185 306 2855 60.5 9.33 79 27 7 10 163.4 77.1 82.8 While these numbers wont wow anyone. He was successful running a pro-style offense and I believe would fit well with what Hue is trying to do with the Browns. Despite his pedestrian performance against Northwestern in the bowl game. I keep going back to the Clemson tape and am impressed at the potential I think he has. He has a decent arm. Hangs in the pocket to deliver throws. Can scramble when needed. When the Browns are on the board in the 4th round I wouldn't mind them taking this guy. While I'm not here to say that he is going to be "the guy" to lead the Browns to their first super bowl title, I do think that in the long run he can be a durable starter that Hue can build around. P.S. This is a pretty good write up. I really don't' want to sound like I'm regurgitating what others have to say. http://www.steelersdepot.com/2017/02/2017-nfl-draft-player-profiles-pittsburgh-qb-nathan-peterman/ P.P.S GO ahead and rip on me as you will *KISSING* Just remember I DID NOT want anything to do with JM
I threw up on draft day when they picked the no class talentless little weasel .. the Pitt QB has looked good Crex . Roll with Kessler this season . get others pieces in place to help him out & the defense . we can with Kessler IMHO . BUT .. If Mahomes is still around in the third I might be tempted to pick him . Just stop this train wreck .I am not getting any younger or healthier here . Just one before we all die !
Chalk up former GM Charley Casserly as another "expert" that thinks the Browns should and will trade the #12 pick to New England for Jimmy G....He's not impressed with any of the rookies and he's convinced that JG is the route Cleveland should go. . He even went so far as to compare Garoppolo to Aaron Rogers. Says he has the same type of "moxie", quiet confidence, work ethic, positive influence in the QB room and athleticism as Rogers. Also, for whatever it's worth, Mike Mayock thinks Cleveland should go after the Patriot back-up QB, though he thinks we could get it done for a pair of second rounders. Maybe one this year and one in 2018...Mayock rated the rookies in this order; 1 Kizer, 2 Watson, 3 Trubisky, 4 Mahomes, 5 Webb......For the record, he had Carr as his 4th rated QB a couple years ago, and he was high on Bortles and Manziel... Not surprisingly, Garoppolo to Cleveland is a popular notion with the talking heads, and the ex NFL GM's, that are now talking heads...No word on what Ray Farmer thinks.
