Another good point, so what we should really be doing is taking every prospect in the draft, well, actually you should take them and determine who is YOUR #1 prospect at the position and then...compare him to the following list: Jared Goff 1 - too early to tell Carson Wentz 2 - too early to tell Jamieus Winston 1 - on his way to being successful Marcus Mariota 2 - on his way to being successful [del]Blake Bortles 3 - FAIL[/del] Andrew Luck 1 - successful as a prospect, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise [del]Robert Griffin III 2 - FAIL[/del] Ryan Tannehill 8 - too early to tell, not writing him off yet, but needs to improve Cam Newton 1 - successful [del]Jake Locker 8 - FAIL[/del] [del]Sam Bradford 1 - FAIL[/del] Matthew Stafford 1- successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise [del]Mark Sanchez 5 - FAIL[/del] Matt Ryan 3 - successful [del]JaMarcus Russell 1 - FAIL[/del] [del]Vince Young 1 - FAIL[/del] [del]Matt Leinart 10 - FAIL[/del] Jay Cutler 11 - successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise Alex Smith 1 - successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise Eli Manning 1 - successful Philip Rivers 4 - successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise Ben Roethlisberger 11 - successful Carson Palmer 1 - successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise [del]Byron Leftwich 7 - FAIL[/del] [del]David Carr 1 - FAIL[/del] [del]Joey Harrington 3 - FAIL[/del] Michael Vick 1 - successful, unsuccessful in carrying a franchise [del]Tim Couch 1 - FAIL[/del] This is a list of the 27 QBs taken since our return in the top 12 picks, since we own #1 and #12 respectively. Do any of the current prospects add up to the prospects on this list? If not, then throw that idea out the window immediately... If they do, then just realize you have a 45% chance at outright failure.... You have a 15% chance at finding a guy who takes you to championships.... Another 33% chance that you find a guy who can win at Fantasy Football, but won't help your team win on Sundays a whole bunch.... Food for thought.... I am in the corner of building a team that can win on Sundays, and then plugging in a guy who won't lose the games for you one Sundays....at least until a top notch prospect emerges that is in that compares to the 15%ers above... In other words, if they aren't in the same company as Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, Cam Newton or Ben Roethlisberger(minus the rape tendencies), then should we be spending on one of these guys early in the draft? Edited to include Tannehill, whom I somehow missed
Maybe for another thread, instead of the QB thread, but another good point...I personnaly would have given Mangini a chance to grow in this organization. I liked him as much as I now like Hue...That said, he is the only one on that list... But, imho, if Mangini were still in charge, I think we might be having different conversations right now.
It isn't about mentioning names TD, you are overly sensitive I think. After all, that's the whole point of this thread... It is about proper compensation for said names that we are debating. No one is drawing up a vote to get you banned because you are talking, lol. I love the fact we are all passionately talking!! We have gone through what 3-4 pages over the past day on a subject? I love all the input and different ideas. Now, if we are talking about trading our #65 pick overall for Jimmy Garoppolo, I don't think you would have seen nearly as many dissenting feelings on that subject what so ever....
You know? I've been trying to think of a back-up QB that went to another team and was successful. Once I got past Steve Young and Bret Favre, I stalled out. Anybody have any more? edit: Technically Steve Young wouldn't count. He was the starting QB for Tampa for two seasons before his move to the 49ers to be Montana's back-up.
I get upset when I'm misinterpreted or taken out of context...There is a difference between what I want to happen, and what I think will happen....My initial thought on Garoppolo was that I wouldn't trade more than a third round pick, but after researching, and reading many comments about him from people I respect very much, I determined in my mind that wasn't going to be enough. I mentioned that 4 teams could be involved (Cle, Chi., Hou, SF) and that would likely drive the price up...In the end, I mentioned that I'd be ok if we could get it done for one of the second rounders, but I wouldn't be shocked if we had to deal #12 to make it happen....None of that means Jimmy G is my guy. That's when frustration set in...
*SCRATCH* Another good question...Drew Brees, but that was a whole other situation, he had really proven himself already, the only question remaining was his injury. (edit Well, if you're going to edit out Steve Young, then Drew Brees DEFINITELY needs to be edited out... So, we are going with Brett Favre then? Great odds on Garoppolo coming in...and I thought his small hands were a problem...
You aren't the only one TD, happens to me all the time... However, I don't think anyone was necessarily pinning him on you until you started defending him. I just think that people have strong opinions one way or the other and were expressing them. I also caution in taking too much interest in what the talking heads are saying. One of the main ones driving this Garoppolo bus is Mary Kay-Cabot and she has ZERO credibility in doing anything but reporting what has already happened. I don't think she has ever shared breaking news concerning the Browns in all her days covering them...However, because she is the Browns Beat reporter, there are many national guys that pick it up and run with it so that the clicks get made to what ever website they work for. We have to have conversation and it's these guys jobs to manufacture that conversation. Would anyone have been talking if this is how the national guys said it: No clicks, let alone return clicks....
I understand the percentages of failure Irish...But we haven't had a QB here since the re-emerge in 99. I can't let the fact that we are the worst drafting team is sports get into the equation...Past failures are just that. Past....Yes, there is a chance that they could swing and miss again, but they can't let that stop them from trying...You go nowhere in this league without a QB... I believe the difference between winning and losing is a very thin line in this league. A true QB that everybody believes in can make all the difference in the world. The Browns are not the pathetic team that the world thinks, but they are at the QB position...I've seen lots of teams go to the playoffs with bad defenses. If the 2016 Browns had a great QB, they would have been right in the mix for division title..Hell, we should have won 5 or 6 with the minimal production we had....We were a 9 to 11 win team with Aaron Rogers....Our coach has all but shouted it to the world that we DON'T have the guy now...We must keep trying...
TD, no one is saying to quit trying to find a QB. There's no doubt in my mind that the Browns will draft one again this year. I can't speak for everyone in here, but IMHO, I do not believe that the three or four front runners in this draft are worth a 1st round pick and maybe not even worth a 2nd round pick. That's all.
Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Delhomme both guided their new teams to a SB appearance....I consider that a success..
Just for fun ]:-> If these were the only options, Which scenario would you prefer? Mitch Trubisky /Watson at pick #12 or Trade a second round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo?
If I was forced by the owner to do it?? Personally I would take the most proven of the 3, Deshaun Watson at #12...It isn't even up to debate for me. Obviously I am in the minority on this one.
My point being, don't elevate the QB out of need, that is all... If there are 5 QBs with potential and ALL 5 QBs have 64 other prospects that have a higher potential, don't take the QB in the first round, take one of the 32 prospects you have rated at the highest level.. Now, that being said, I do trust Hue and if he is adamant about one of these prospects, then I wouldn't wait until #12, I would want him to take him at #1. THEN, SAS, if you feel that strongly about Myles Garrett, make what ever deal you need to make to move up to #2 and get him as well...QB trumps pass rusher, BUT, if and only if said QB is rated as a high first round talent.
Man, you need to laugh a little...I was just yanking your chain. I simply have bad memories about the Jake Delhomme era
You would rather spend #12 on Watson, then trade #52 for Garoppolo? Wow. That surprises me....We really see everything different. Even my 2nd option would have been Trubisky at #12...lol!
