Actuallly, if... Quinn = Savior and Carr = Quinn and Peterman = Carr ... then Peterman = Savior So we've come full circle. #EverettBrown
Let me ask you guys this...If we can't find a suitable trade partner for Brock Osweiler, why would we just cut him? We are the ,most QB needy team of all time, and we are paying him $16m, which we are on the hook for either way....What am I missing? Why wouldn't we bring him in to compete? All I keep hearing is that Browns will release Osweiler if unable to trade....Doesn't make sense. *SCRATCH*
It makes absolutely no sense. Why in the hell would a team (any team) trade for a player if they know up front that the player will be cut if not traded? All they would have to do is sit back and wait for him to cut. The only way it could work is if more than one team showed interest. But then why come out and say if a trade can't be made, we will just cut him? You either trade him or let him compete.
Because it's being reported that his contract has off-set language. Clearly someone will sign him and pay him something if he's released. Whatever 1st year income he receives from his next team will be money the Browns don't have to pay.
Re: Osweiler He's not worth anything now in a trade, but around training camp or preseason when a starter goes down with injury, you suddenly have a tradeable commodity. You offer to pitch in $8M in signing bonus ($8M salary), maybe he's worth a second rounder. You offer to pitch in $15M in singing bonus ($1M salary), maybe he's worth a first rounder. He'll only be released if there's no market. But yeah, he's a moody, mediocre talent with a huge cap hit.
I (like most of us) have done more than one autopsy on last year's debacle. IMO, it started when they signed RGIII. Hear me out before you tar and feather me . . . It can not be argued that RGIII came to the Browns with a unique skill set. Hell, in the right setting, he may have even been successful. The problem, as I see it, was that the minute he was signed, Hue began implementing an offensive scheme that took advantage of that skill set. I suspect that, at least 80% of every meeting and every rep in OTA's, training camp and pre-season practise was spent on honing this scheme. Then, after only one game, the scheme that they had been perfecting for all that time went right down the shitter as none of the rest of the QB's in the room were capable of playing in that scheme. Let's face it . . . RGIII and Josh McCown are about as diametrically opposed as two QB's can get and Cody Kessler didn'the even know where the shitter was! Compound that with the emmense lack of experience on the roster and then the injuries to key players as the season progressed and the end result should have been predictable. My Dad always told me, "there's no education the second time you get kicked by a mule." If I'm right, I have to believe that Hue is going to fill the QB room with clones of each other so when (not if) the starter goes down due to injury, the next guy up doesn't dictate a change in scheme. Right now, all three QB's on the roster have drop back pocket passer roots. That's why I think Hue will not draft a spread office mobile QB with a quick strike offence. I expect to see three yards and a cloud of dust, a dink and dunk passing game with just enough over the top throws to keep the opposing defense honest. If I'm close to being right, I think you can eliminate Watson, Kiser and Mahomes from the plan. Trubisky may be out simply due to his lack of starting experience. I'm thinking the Browns' draft target is someone like Davis Webb from Cal and Brock is the week one starter. Okay . . . Fire at will!
That said . . . I think it's still Garrett at #1, O.J. Howard at #12. Then Davis Webb and D'onta Foreman in round 2 (not necessarily in that order) with the remaining seven picks in rounds 3 through 6 going to Wiliams' side of the ball along with the bulk of any remaining free agent signings.
I think the problem stems from Hue Jackson and Bob Griffin. That combination helped torpedo the system. Now, had it worked out and he stayed healthy, maybe we're talking about 7-9 and Hue looks like a genius. Hue never really had "his guy" at QB. Even as a head coach in Oakland, he was dealt the hand of Jason Campbell, wanted to draft Colin Kapernick (and missed out) and ended up having to trade for veteran Carson Palmer - all tradtional drop-back passers. His other QBs have been: Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton, and Joey Harrington. Again, all drop-back guys. We don't know what happens behind the scenes, but it's documented that Hue loved Jared Goff (spread QB), personally worked out Carson Wentz (and at the very least agreed on passing him up), and fell head-over-heels with Bob after his workout. He saw the chance to get "his guy" and run "his scheme" and took it.
Here's the only thing I would disagree with... I think if Trubisky falls to #12, he's the pick. I even think there's a chance, if the price is right, that the Browns could trade up for him. Price and urgency would be the key factors in that decision. Otherwise, they'll allow the QB's to come to them in this draft. Trubisky has been linked the most to the Browns and would seem to be the best fit of both worlds - can (likely) play from the pocket but also has impressive athleticism. I foresee a waterfall effect with the QB's if they don't trade up. If Trubisky isn't there at #12 (and I don't think Howard will be, either), they'll pass. If Mahomes isn't there at #33, they'll pass. If Peterman/Webb isn't there at #52, they'll pass. And so on, so forth. If no QB gets drafted, open competition between Brock and Cody with Kessler winning in a landslide.
I don't disagree either, which is why I drafted Deshone Kizer in the second round of my mock...he is a pro style drop back passer. In 2015, he looked more refined than in 2016, but because of that film, I believe he will end up being drafted higher than most are predicting. But, I agree Lym, I think they will ultimately end up drafting a drop back passer, either Kizer at #12 or Sammie's boy, Nate Peterman, in the #52 or #65 slot, depending on what the chatter is like in their circles.
Hue's "documented love" for Jared Goff could have just as easily been meant as a smoke screen intended to drive the price of pick #2 up. And his tacit approval on passing on Wentz could have been swayed by the resulting cache of draft picks that were required to implement the Browns' long term plan.
LOL - My boy? I don't know about all that... I'm with her: Also, just a recent thought on Webb and Peterman: [twitter=https://twitter.com/nfldraftscout/status/844566186096578562][/twitter] I can see one or two QB's gone in the Top 10 and then a few more (2 - 3) that go at the bottom of that round, either through a trade-up with an early round two team, or by a franchise with an older QB looking for a developmental guy (e.g., the Chiefs).
I really want to continue this dialog but I have an appointment and some errands to run. I'll be back later in the day.
I'm with you, and her, as well...I deeply believe if this TEAM is built, Cody Kessler can run this offense..My worry though, are the two concussions. Many times athletes don't come back from that.
Then pull the Garfloppolo? - take a flyer on a mid- to late-round body who could develop over time, but who isn't going to challenge the incumbent right away. How many "trans-formative QB's" are out there, anyway? Andrew Luck was the second coming of Jesus and he's been below average because he's on a pretty crappy team (imagine what that team would look like playing in the AFC North, East, or West). I count three*: Tom Brady*, Ben Roethlisberger, and Aaron Rodgers. Cam Newton was one, but he forgot how to football in 2016 and is now having surgery on his throwing shoulder. Yikes. Derek Carr could be one... he's an incomplete as of now. Outside of those top three guys, you had nine other teams make the playoffs with a great team composed. That has to be the goal - build a great team and find the proper steward. I won't pull my hair out if they take Watson or Trubisky at #12, Peterman at #52, or Webb at #65. But if they have to pass on a better player to do so, I'm against it.
