2017 NFL Draft | Quarterbacks

Like I said in the offseason board...

Hue's showing us one of two things (neither is good).

    1. He has seen enough in a short sample period to determine that our current QB's do not have the ability to ascend beyond their current ceilings. However, he was the instrumental force in acquiring them, meaning his evaluation ability is bad.

    2. He has seen enough in a short sample period to determine that he cannot develop our current QB's beyond where they are today (this would seem more likely, as he only worked with high draft picks previously). However, this means his development ability isn't very good.

    3. Technically, it could be a little bit of both.

So now, in a draft class rich with defensive talent, we're debating letting someone who either doesn't measure up as an evaluator of QB talent or a developer of it make the decision on the direction of the position - perhaps at the expense of an All Pro defensive talent.

The true value of a "Franchise QB" is the stability it brings to the organization - not too many Tom Brady's are available, so even the media darling Garoppolo isn't taking us from 1-15 to 12-4 next season. That said, without a good nucleus to develop with, a young QB is going to wear our much faster.

Cleveland, in my opinion, is not ready to take that step. But they are in a position to build an elite defense and structure an offensive attack around the running game. You don't get to the playoffs consistently this way, but you win enough games to develop your talent and (just maybe) identify if the third round pick you had a ton of confidence in last season and who wasn't even supposed to see the field can either: (A) continue to develop, or (B) act as a bridge until you find that QB to take over.

Kizer is like the other prospects in that they all have their warts and bruises. I think there's a high upside to him, but a team that takes him is going to need him to sit for two years and basically use what should have been the development league time at Notre Dame as his development before throwing him into an NFL lineup.

Kansas City would be the perfect (and reasonable) destination for him.

Kizer's footwork was so bad on those dropbacks, and his accuracy was atrocious... How the hell can he be Mike Mayock's #1 QB?? Whatever team he goes to, has a project on their hands. I was wondering what was wrong with him, ya almost got the impression he wasn't taking the drills seriously. Like he wasn't into it... It was that bad...I'm glad he's bright, because he looked like he's got a long way to go...

Pats want too much for JG. If they would do it for #12, Cleveland will move for him...If not, Trubisky will be our pick....They should stay patient at #12....Chicago is out, they want Glennon....SF is about to trade for Cousins, so I guess the question is, what would Washington do at #2? I think Watson goes right there...And I'm starting to think there is a chance Trubisky gets to #12...

The picture will get clearer soon enough...

I hate to say it, but the way college careers went, I see a lot of similarities between Kizer and Christian Hackenberg....both took steps back their last season of college, and both have the prototypical QB build....

Stole this from Scout.com. Someone put together an "All 22" for Kessler's completion (including interceptions) from last season.

Dabo Swinney stands by calling Deshaun Watson ?Michael Jordan?

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney raised eyebrows when he warned the Browns last month that if they pass on quarterback Deshaun Watson, they?re passing on Michael Jordan. But Swinney isn?t backing down from that lofty comparison.

Swinney said at Clemson?s Pro Day that he sees no reason he shouldn?t compare Watson to Jordan because he thinks they?re both special athletes.

?Some of the media folks got mad at me because I said if you pass on him you?re passing on Michael Jordan. But I don?t know how to articulate the type of greatness that?s inside of him. And for me that?s what Michael Jordan represents because that?s what I grew up with,? Swinney said, via the Charlotte Observer. ?I?m sure when Michael Jordan was coming out of North Carolina his 3-pointer wasn?t very good. And he probably had some flaws, whatever, when you start poking holes on him,? Swinney added. ?But it?s who he was, that will, that drive. You can?t coach that and that?s what I want to make sure I articulate. This guy is brilliant between the ears and he?s special in his heart.?

Comparing a football player to Michael Jordan is suggesting that he?s poised to become the greatest player in NFL history, and it might be slightly premature to say that about Watson before he has ever played in an NFL game. But the coach who knows Watson best sounds awfully confident that he?s going to be a great one.

    - Dabo Swinney on... Tajh Boyd

I'm pretty sure that Jimbo Fisher had nothing but glowing words for Cam Erving as well.

    Just sayin'

    Yeah well...

Just to update that 11 win, never been done before....

They now have back to back 14 win seasons, which also had never been done before...

I could give two shits about Tajh Boyd, he was NEVER considered to be a top 150 player..

However, this time last year, Deshaun Watson was being touted as a top 10 pick overall(the only other QB close to him was Deshone Kizer)...now he is being called a 2nd-4th round grade? That is a little ridiculous. I still believe if he is available at #33, the Browns need to take him. Kizer went backwards, Watson went forward and still is being chastised.

We will agree to disagree at this point...I don't think anything is going to change any of our minds on the QBs..We will have to actually wait and see what their careers bring over the next 10 years.

I personally think the careers will be in this order from best to worst:
    Deshaun Watson
    Deshone Kizer
    Mitch Trubisky

All others...someone might show up, like others have, but I don't see anyone else that jumps out as having started 32 games in their first 5 years in the league...As always, I could be wrong, but for my money, I think Watson is the best in this class.

Ken Dorsey was a pretty special college player with a weak arm, too.

For starters... I don't recall anyone outside of South Bend talking about Deshone Kizer. I do agree, though, that he's a third-round prospect.

    ;)

I agree that everyone is probably killing Watson unfairly and he's going to be a better pro than people are trying to say.

I also love his football intelligence and character. He's exactly the kind of guy I want in the locker room. But he's not the guy I want in Cleveland throwing into the wind in December. I already have that guy (Kessler).

I think Watson can be a great player in the right system... I don't think Cleveland is that system.

Kind of tough to predict until we know where they go. Browns trade #12 for Garoppolo, Belichick takes Trubisky, Brady gets injured and Belichick gives him the Drew Bledsoe treatment and he could win a Super Bowl year one. Absurd, I realize, but just saying we don't know what will happen until they land somewhere.

There could be a guy who pulls a Derek Carr (cough, Peterman, cough) who isn't highly-thought of, who goes in the second round, and who ends up being the best of the bunch (at least through three seasons).

I give the edge to Trubisky for (A) wanting to be in Cleveland and (B) having a better arm and pocket awareness. I would rather have, in no particular order, the following players before either of them:

    O.J. Howard
    Solomon Thomas
    Malik Hooker
    Jamal Adams
    Marshon Lattimore
    Reuben Foster
    Leonard Fournette
    Corey Davis

So in a worst-case scenario and all those guys are off the board, I would have to lean towards Trubisky over Watson. But honestly, I'd rather trade down.

Trubisky also has his warts (limited tape, leadership abilities) and I wouldn't want to bank either as the "future" guy and I don't know that either get you appreciably more wins than Cody Kessler on this Browns team in 2017.

So he's a lower guy on my board, but Kizer looks pretty sharp in his whiteboard with Mooch. These things are a little gimmicky, but they do give a small look into how the player carries himself.

Any concern with Hue and Sashi missing all these Pro Days?

Last year, Hue's down there running them with the QB's. This year, they're not even in attendance.

Smoke screen? Disinterest in the QB prospects? Satisfied with the current roster? Already know who they're going to take?

Could be (5) All of the above.

Imperative to get ahead of the Jets....hmmm, where have I heard that before?

  17. TopDawg Legend

Of all the theories we have batted around for a while now, this is the one that makes the most sense to me. Take Garrett at #1 and don't mess around. Then use your assets to get ahead of the jets, and get Trubisky....I don't doubt the truth in those rumors.

No ill will intended because the greatest minds in football regularly whiff when it comes to evaluating QBs but as I listen to Bruce Allen and Brady Quinn on NFL radio I had to chuckle at this comparison.

Maybe Peterman excels and becomes an NFL star but if you believe in patterns he's in trouble with the SAS endorsement:

    "Brady Quinn = Browns savior"

    After Quinn busted...

    "Derek Carr = Brady Quinn"

    After Carr excels...

    "Nate Peterman = Derek Carr"
