I would add, I still view Goff as the choice the Browns will make on draft day. I, personally, would still start McCown but I don't know that the Browns will take that route.

That is my thought exactly Sam...

What is the better, or I guess worse situation?

Having a rookie come into training camp and get every possible snap to learn the offense, or name McCown the starter with the intention to let the rookie sit, then have McCown go down week 1 or 2 and that rookie have to enter the game cold and not having the snaps that could have made him more comfortable?

If the plan is to have a rookie QB start next fall, then Hue and Depodesta NEED to convince Mack to stay and get Schwartz resigned yesterday. I would feel much more comfortable with a rookie under center knowing that the O-line does not have any glaring holes in it.

    Agreed.

I would go so far as to say if the Browns do indeed lose 2/3 or more of their offensive line, they really can't afford to go QB at No. 2. Why would you invest a high pick in a franchise guy only to have him work behind a patchwork offensive line?

    Personally I wouldn't *INLOVE*

Although if that does happen. I'll have flashbacks... *HELP* *HELP*

Poor Timmy Couch. Still the best QB we've had since the return.

A wise man once posted that you can't not do something for fear of injury.

Care to guess who that was?

(Hint #1: It wasn't Sir Cheeks)

(Hint #2: He thinks he's more of a prophet)

Man, I wish we saw more from Cardale while he was in school...

Watching Cam Newton play football this year...It seems like Cardale is a lot like Cam..except that I don't see the passion in Jones that Newton has. He has made professional football fun for his teammates. He is the undisputed leader of that football team...Then you bring in the same type of leader on defense in Jared Allen, which is contagious for Luke Kuechly.

Cardale has all of the attributes that Newton has...every one of them, except I think he can actually throw the ball better than Cam could when he entered the league. Cam has become a true passing QB though, that can run at anytime.

I just haven't seen enough of Jones to see if he has the ability to read defenses, which is a catalyst to success.

The way that Panthers offense is dominating this year though...man I REALLY REALLY want Cardale Jones...

The more I watch film on all of these QBs, the more I think I want Carson Wentz at #2 (I absolutely think he will be a top 5 pick) and still take Cardale in the 3rd...If he is still available.

I'm not suggesting the Browns change their draft plans based on the injury history of Josh McCown, although we'd all be remiss in thinking that it wasn't part of the discussion.

I was merely saying that if you take a guy at No. 2 overall, you have to have the expectation that he could start at some point and the recent history of the League has shown that point to be immediately.

I've said multiple times that I'm okay with starting McCown until the rookie is ready. If it's Jared Goff, I'd say that's about three weeks. If it's Cardale Jones, I'd say that's about two seasons.

    Aww... I miss that guy.

    Fixed it for you!

    Exact. Same. Wavelength, friend.

    Ugh. You lost me.

I think Wentz can be a Top 5 pick, too... if Dallas takes him and makes him the successor to Tony Romo. I don't think we have the team structure in place to make Wentz successful in Cleveland.

I also don't think Wentz is going to be half the quarterback Jared Goff will be. As we established at the onset of this thread, Goff is my guy and I will be more than okay with the Browns drafting him at No. 2 overall, so you know we'll disagree on this. I just don't know that I could stomach taking Wentz.

Although Myles Jack is tempting there, too.

I have this struggle with deciding which one would be a better choice. Jared Goff, or Myles Jack?

I like to call this conundrum: Jack/Goff.

Not my quote, but I thought I'd share it...

Including the FCS Championship Wentz technically has 612 throws, but still the point stands. Goff has 1,568 attempts to be judged on... two and a half times more of a sample size.

Sorry... but I'm officially putting Wentz in the JaMarcus Russell bucket. Intriguing prospect in terms of size, but currently enjoying a meteoric rise due to his last college game and off-season hype versus two or three previous years of game tape and exposure.

Well, after this post, I decided to take another look Sam...

I've spent half of my home office day re-watching every game available on Goff and Wentz..AND Cardale Jones.

My mind not only hasn't changed, it was strengthened.

To be honest, knowing we are taking a QB over some other players that I personally think are stud players...I am being a bit...I guess short minded. Trying to see the best out of best available.

I still see TWO QBs that are low first round talent vs. the rest of the draft class AND the third has sparks of brilliant sprinkled in a mine field of insecurities and bad decisions...but by God, this team is taking a QB #2 overall, so might as well evaluate the best [del]two[/del] three (imho).

Honestly, watching all the tape...I would rather put every last resource into honing the brilliance in Cardale. He has (and it isn't really close) the most upside of this draft class. But, he also has the longest road ahead of him. In the NFL, that long road more times than not end up a career with the title "bust" attached to it.

So with that said...I can't care about the defenses the kid played against. I have to find a way to look past that and simply look at the mechanics each display. From my eyes, Wentz has better footwork, a better release and seems to scan the field a little better. Goff has better presence in the pocket and a longer career against better defenses, albeit the Pac-12, so even that isn't overly impressive.

Taking everything into account, I will have a positive attitude towards either of these QBs..as long as it is one of these two and not any of the other posers that will be drafted between these two and Cardale...

  14. If the Browns go QB at #2 then it will be Geoff. After watching Stanford I really liked that Hogan kid. Granite he had what I think is the Best player in college football McCafferey to throw to.But If we select Bosa,Tunsil or Treadwell with that pick then as of right now I would take a hard look at Hogan.

With the way this team has drafted I don't want them to say its to early to take this player or that player. As usual I want starters except for QB. No more Gilberts, Ervings and Richardsons.

  15. I'm a huge Buckeye nut but unless you draft Jones in the 4th rd or lower its a wasted pick. He can't read defenses. At OSU he had a very good team around him. He's a project. I wish him the best of luck but let someone else worry about it.

  16. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

At the time they were drafted, they were considered starters...and the best at their individual positions in the draft to boot...

The draft is a crap shoot...Bosa, Tunsil AND Treadwell could easily ALL bust, while Cardale Jones could be forced to start due to injury or any other situation, on what ever team he ends up on and end up lighting up the NFL...

No one knows how anyone will react to the NFL, that is what makes this exciting.

  17. Jones wasn't even as good as TJ Barrett. With the same team he couldn't put points on the board. Even Meyer yanked him in the red zone, lol. Once teams shut down the long pass he couldn't throw short. Not a top QB, he is a project.

Speaking of the Buckeyes. How did you guys like the Carolina Buckeyes? The Browns should take a note of that, lol

  18. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Yes, Jones is definitely a project...so is every other player in this draft, if you don't believe that you are a fool...

Some are presumably more ready than others, but the reality is, no one will know just how ready or coachable they are until that first pro game.

  19. Cardale is so far from being a NFL QB its not even funny....he probably came from the 2 worst programs where u can fit into a NFL system in Glenville and Ohio St....these plays were go down the field and b the better athlete and win....he has no clue how 2 read a college defense let alone the complexity of NFL defenses....he culdnt even start at Ohio St over another QB that probably wont get drafted in Barrett

  20. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

    I agree 100%

But you can't deny the skill set..His strengths are PERFECT for the pro game, he has never been in a system to help those skills blossom. Now he does..He could easily become the best QB in this draft class...Yes, he could also fail miserably based on the fact he has never done it...but watch the film guys, his footwork and that arm are remarkable. The question becomes, can he learn all the nuances needed to be successful at this level...He was successful enough to win a spot on The Ohio State Buckeyes AND win a National Championship in a system that doesn't play to his strengths. He will finally have a team of coaches there specifically to hone his pro style skills.

As for Barrett, he doesn't play a game condusive to the pro game...They basically play two different positions due to their skill set...Barrett's skill set plays perfectly into the system that Meyer has put into place, so obviously Barrett is the perfect QB to run it AND succeed at the college level, which is a totally different game than the pro level. It isn't like baseball where you pitch, hit and field...the many different systems produce MANY different types of players...you know that, I'm not telling you anything new...To compare Barrett and Jones is like comparing chocolate to an onion. Chocolate is great in deserts, but have you ever tried to garnish an italian style pizza with it? Onions are great fried, but would you chop one up and throw it on ice cream?
