Neither Kaepernick or Gabbert are very good quarterbacks. I have to believe Kelly will target "his guy" in the draft and could very well jump ahead of Cleveland if they feel strongly enough. I'd say if he had more say in personnel, he'd move to No. 1 and take Jared Goff no questions asked. Either way, neither of the 49ers' cast-offs are guys I would want on the Browns. They also don't seem like Hue Jackson-style quarterbacks. He's had: Carson Palmer, Jason Campbell, and Andy Dalton. Those are pocket guys with good arm strength and functional mobility (looking at you, Cardale Jones).
This has an interesting slant to it. Hue wanted to draft Kaep and rated him higher than Cam Newton so there is potential there for Jackson to show interest. http://www.silverandblackpride.com/...ms-colin-kaepernick-was-the-one-that-got-away I agree with Kelly going after a quarterback to groom. If Chip can get a decent return on moving Colin than I can see Carson Wentz being selected with the 7th pick in the draft.
Interesting read, I hadn't heard that. Although I didn't see in the piece where they said he was higher-rated than Cam. Kinda brings Hue's decision making into question regarding quarterbacks. I know he didn't pick Dalton and that Jay Gruden had to really argue for the Bengals to pick him up. Kaepernick really isn't a very good quarterback. Even his numbers are fairly pedestrian. Really hope he doesn't find his way onto our roster...
The All-Ohio State Draft. (This is only partially joking.) 1-2: Joey Bosa, DE 2-32: Eli Apple, CB 3-65: Cardale Jones, QB 4-96: Braxton Miller, WR How wild to have three ex-OSU quarterbacks on the roster at one time?
The article I linked mentions Kaep being the top quarterback on their board but I had read prior that this included Cam, Dalton, Ponder, Locker and Gabbert. I'll see if I can dig it up. Colin has struggled since the departure of Harbaugh while Alex Smith has continued to quietly go about the business of being one of the most under-appreciated signal callers in the league. At this point it is safe to say that San Francisco downgraded at the position.
Here's a link with Kaep over Cam - http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...son-eyed-colin-kaepernick-for-oakland-raiders
Now we just gotta figure a way to get Deron Lee, Taylor Decker and EZ.E., in there.....lol! Time to re-load at Ohio State...Whew! It's good to be a Buckeye....Hopefully a few of these guys are on the Browns' radar....I was reading a first Rd mock yesterday and it had 5 Buckeyes going in the first round. Bosa was #1 and joining him in the first were Apple, Decker, Elliott and Lee......It might have been Kiper's draft, I'm not sure, but it speaks volumes about the quality brand of football they play in Columbus.....
Really? We haven't even had the week 1 coin flip to see who kicks and who receives and we're questioning our new coaches decision making? Really?
You're absolutely right, Sam. TODAY, Cam Newton is a far superior quarterback than Colin Kaepernick. No argument what so ever. However, hindsight is always 20/20 and leading up to the draft in 2011, there were off-field and/or character concerns swirling around Newton. So, from where I'm sitting . . . it doesn't surprise me that some had Colin Kaepernick rated higher. But what do I know. I'm just a racist.
In spite of Lyman's inability to understand that I was just making a point about how football has evolved, and not calling him a racist, I agree with him here...You only have to go back two years and you would find tons of "experts" that had Kaepernick rated higher than Newton.... Lyman, I'm not the best writer obviously, not by a long shot, but I'm pretty sure you understood the point I was making about how the QB position has evolved....You are acting foolish and you need to get over it. Nobody thought I was calling you a racist.... You say the read option type QB can't succeed in the NFL, and I tried to show how foolish that is by giving a little history lesson. To me it seemed to be pertinent to the conversation to mention that for the vast majority of this league's existence, they didn't let these guys even have a shot at playing QB. They had to switch positions or forget an NFL career....This is all stuff that you know. I Certainly wasn't calling you or any other poster a racist. If it came off like that, then I apologize. I went back and re-read several times and still don't see where you are coming from at all, but whatever.....Can we move on or what? Obviously the league has come a long way....
C'mon... even at the time, Cam Newton was clearly the superior prospect. I was the guy's biggest detractor during his run at Auburn, but the success he had and his talent was undeniable. "Off-field stuff", which was allegedly getting paid to play, was not the same as some other off-field concerns that might drop players down some boards. Cam won two Championships, was 6'5" 250 pounds, ran a 4.4, and had a cannon arm. [x]Doubt. You're talking about a draft where: Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, and Andy Dalton were all taken (so obviously higher-rated) ahead of Kaepernick.
Wrong. I did. You quote a post of mine and then go directly into a mini-rant about black quarterbacks not getting a fair shake. You could have done that without quoting me. For the vast majority of the NFL's existence, the read-option offense didn't even exist. Be glad to.
You're missing the point here, Sam. We're not talking about if YOU had Kaepernick rated higher than Newton, I was saying that it was perfectly logical for some folks in the NFL to have him rated higher. Just because their option differed from yours doesn't mean they have a screw loose. I stand by my comment that it is way too premature to question the decision making ability of a Head Coach that's been on the job for (now) a whopping 4 days.
For the record, there was no "rant"....C'mon my friend....."Rants" are full of bold print and caps and explanation points....There was none of that. Sorry I cropped your quote to begin with....my bad.
Here we go.... QBs always seem to rise up mock draft boards leading up to the draft... Well, this one happened earlier than I thought... The NFL Network Mock draft 1.0 Has: 1. Joey Bosa 2. Jared Goff 3. Laremy Tunsil and the Cowboys at #4 overall Carson Wentz Then the 3rd QB in the first round, Paxton Lynch to the Rams at #15 Another note, the first WR is Coleman at #22 then Treadwell at #23
I assume we're at No. 2? Coleman sounds right at 22, but there's no way Treadwell falls to 23... that's just right out. There's always a need for a QB, so you could have guys like Conner Cook pushed into R1, too. Would make sense for a team like Arizona that has very few needs, but should plan for the QB position once Palmer is gone. No, I think Cleveland needs to decide if they want to draft a guy early and start him right away, or if they want to pick a guy in the middle rounds and try to develop him. And that's still assuming they don't try to trade for an existing signal caller like Matt Stafford.
There is a 3rd option, Sam. Draft a QB at #2 and NOT start him right away. Not sexy but perhaps prudent.
I don't disagree with your thought, Lyman, it just doesn't seem to happen any more. Quarterbacks taken that early have a lot of pressure to step into the spot right away. Even teams that draft guys and say they want to shelve them (Jacksonville, Bortles) end up starting them either out of necessity or injury. I have zero problems with letting Josh McCown run the show for as long as he'll stay healthy. My concern is how long that will be for and then having a guy who can step in once/if that happens. Often times, there's a lot less pressure on a third or fourth round pick to step up in that time of need because the perception is they're not ready.
