lol! I do the same thing with the "Buckeye glasses" SAS....And I think your assessment of Cardale is spot on. I never really thought of him as a first rd prospect because of the same concerns you already mentioned.. I was gettin a little carried away with that. Obviously he has the physical tools to be a first rd QB, but he needs to mature.. Leadership is one of the most important things and I think that's where people will question Cardale..He's got to prove he loves this game and is willing to work hard.. In the draft, who knows? I can see him going anywhere from 2nd rd to 6th rd....But 4th is probably about right....He's got to show them something in the interviews.....
On Cardale..I saw a few clips from his pro-day, and completion or not, it looked like when the passes left his hand they were coming out at around a 35* angle with the ball close to parallel to the ground, and when they were coming down the ball was damn near vertical. I don't recall seeing that in games, has he always spun it so good and had that great "turn-over" on the ball? Or was it just a byproduct of underwear Olympics?
I think that pretty ball is what got everyone drooling after the 2014 season. Problem is, he came into 2015 and was asked to do more with the offense and he struggled. As the confidence level went down, so did his accuracy and touch. With this scenario where everything is scripted, his confidence is at an all time high making it very easy to see the tools that made us all think he would be a future first round pick....With Cardale, it will take a team willing to give him the time he needs to learn a system to the point his confidence level is high. In today's NFL, time is not something that players have. If they aren't starter level within 3 years, they are generally discarded. I hate to utter these words, but as for Cardale's career is concerned, the best team he could land on is the Steelers imo. I believe they would carry 3 QBs, making Cardale the 3rd, where even if/when Ben got injured, there would be a buffer until Cardale had to go in. He would be able to sit behind Ben his entire rookie contract, then sign a reasonable one in his transition stage from Ben to Cardale. I would HATE to see this happen, but I think that would give him the highest probability of success.
Okay SAS, I hope you don't mind me posting this here..I wouldn't mind hearing what Browns fans thought of this...., Here's how my Browns mock turned out in the collaborative effort...Thought I'd share it here because we have similar likes, but admittedly, you sold me on Myles Jack. I was real happy to snag him where I did...We started this draft on the day after the Kaepernick to Cleveland rumor started flying, so I orchestrated a slight trade down in the first rd that I think worked out well...I made a couple other small trades down to add picks and one slight trade up to bottom of the 2nd, but I thought all in all, I would be pleased with this haul...,(and yes, i did take a little heat for being a Buckeye homer, but I don't care....I am what I am ..) 1.2 Trade to SF for 1.7, 3.5 and Colin Kaepernick 1.7 Myles Jack LB U.C.L.A. 2.3 Adolphus Washington DE Ohio State 2.31 Braxton Miller WR Ohio State 3.14 Keanu Neal S Florida 4.1 Cardale Jones QB Ohio State 4.3 Pharoh Cooper WR South Carolina 4C Hassan Ridgeway DL Texas 5.14 Rees Odhiambo OG Boise State 5C Harlan Miller CB SE Louisianna 5C KeiVarae Russell CB Notre Dame 6.1 David Onyemata DE Manitoba 6.13 Tyvis Powell S Ohio State 7.2 Caleb Benenoch OT U.C.L.A. I liked the safety you recommended from William and Mary and targeted him for late 5th, but he got taken about 10 picks before I got on the clock....Though I don't think Powell in the 6th is a bad consolation at all....
It's hard to tell what to believe, but now it looks like the Browns might be more interested in RG3...I like that plan better, because we wouldn't be stuck in a bad contract and we wouldn't have to give up any picks to acquire him...Either way, it seems clear they want another veteran QB...If they do sign RG3, they should make him apologize for the comments he made the year he was drafted, when he was telling the media shortly after the Redskins made their big move to get him, "I'm so glad it wasn't Cleveland that traded up".....just sayin....I haven't forgot that.
I was trying to find this, as I don't remember the comments..I have selective amnesia when it comes to Browns negativity, lol... I had to share this...not sure if this is the right thread for this, but anyway... The Browns had a part in the #2 in this top three, albeit on the negative side, I won't bore you with the rest of the article that you can find in full here: http://www.cleveland.com/mock-draft/index.ssf/2013/04/top_three_nfl_draft_trades_in.html THIS was the point of view across ALL OF SPORTS, following RGIII's awesome rookie season...then the floor fell out and we are all debating the good and bad of adding RGIII as a backup/challenge to be starter. That was 3 short years ago through a very bad situation in Washington. He very well could become a nice starter in this league given the right coach and offense...Enter Hue Jackson...
Oh yeah, RG3 took a couple completely unnecessary swipes at the Browns when the Redskins "won" the sweepstakes for his services....It wasn't anything major, just basically sucking up to the Washington fans at Cleveland's expense....but I remember. Funny how things come full circle so quickly.....It was a lightening fast rise and fall for RG3 in DC....Hopefully he's a better man for it. If he signs here, it will bring some excitement....Maybe Hue can get him back on the right track...
Not bad TD. While I?m not a fan of Kapernick I could see this as a decent insurance policy for McCown, and give McCown time to help groom the future QB. 1.7 Myles Jack LB U.C.L.A. Consensus top ten pick everywhere I look. His knee still concerns me though. I?m not sold at #2 here until I see that he is able to run, cut, and complete the agility drills that demonstrate he?s healed and ready to go. 5C Harlan Miller CB SE Louisianna 5C KeiVarae Russell CB Notre Dame Instead of back to back CB?s here. I would have given more consideration to Beau Sandland TE Montana State. Athletic frame with good mass and room for more. Exceptional arm length and hand size for the position. Capable seam worker. Long strides in vertical routes can overtake squatting safeties. Able to separate out of breaks. Competitive, able runner after catch. Run blocking was a requirement. Has lateral footwork to become workable inline blocker for zone runs and has the experience and hand strength to get early block security. I think he?d be good value here and become a contributor sooner rather than later.
Only two drafts like this one and we'll be in business. We really ought to start spam emailing some of our suggestions to Berea. Only concern here is the value placed on Kapernick in this trade (855, or roughly the #20 overall pick). That's a bit high for a reclamation project. #love I assume DT will be the "slide" position this year where plenty of R1 talent drops into the first several picks of R2. Washington can be disruptive and is a good pickup. #love This is probably close to where he'll be selected, honestly. Good pick. Maybe a stretch at 4.1, but hey... we're homers, right? Definitely looks like a strong rebuilding draft here, top dawg. The only knock would be outside of Jack and Washington, there wouldn't be too many Day 1 starters in there. Not that there need to be as we're obviously going to back to the studs to build this thing.
I appreciate it fellas...Funny you mention Sandland, Crex. I was looking at the TE's in that area. Thought about him, but I was leaning more toward Jake McGee ,whom I later took for Jacksonville, or possibly Ben Braunecker from Harvard. Now I could definitely see our "Crimson crew" coming away with him.. SAS, I agree about the immediate starters, though in our secondary, I could see Neal contributing fairly early. And I lloved landing Powell in the sixth. He just has a knack for making big plays on the ball....Sort of reminds me of Tashaun Gipson. I really tried hard to trade down from 1.7 to somewhere in the mid first round. I would have loved to have added another impact pick or two for this draft or maybe a future...I love Myles Jack but if I could have come away with a Darron Lee or Noah Spence or Shaq Lawson, AND added a 2nd rd pick, I would have done it....
Hate to sound like a homer, but I think Nick Vannett is the TE to draft this year. He looks to be the most complete TE to me. My second choice is Bryce Williams out of East Carolina. It's like watching another Gary Barnidge seeing him play. Third choice is the guy I took in this mock, Henry Krieger-Coble. It's true, a starter could conceivably come from anywhere. We've got major concerns (in my mind) in the back field due to Whinter and Poyer as the current starters.
Update 2.0: The Robert Griffin III Impact Mock Note: For this Mock Draft, I compiled four sources of prospect rankings (Draft Scout, Scouts Inc., Pro Football Focus, and Matt Miller) and have a composite score for each player that helps inform their draft spot. 1-2: Jared Goff, QB California (6'4" 215 pounds) Signing RG3 and placing Josh McCown on the trade block telegraphs this move. The Browns will have their choice of QB's for the first time since Tim Couch and won't be able to pass up the opportunity. Goff is the best QB prospect this year, and it's not as close as the media wants to make it. He's the top-rated passer analytically, set PAC-10 records, surpassing last year's No. 2 overall pick (Mariota), and has a command of the offense that several current NFL starters don't have. Goff has a composite draft ranking of 5.0 (highest among QBs) and is ranked by PFF.com as the #1 passer in college last season, including #1 in pressure/blitz situation, #1 in accuracy, and #2 in long-pass accuracy (behind only Matt Johnson, BGSU). 2-32: Michael Thomas, WR Ohio State (6'3" 212 pounds) Recently reported that Thomas was the top wide receiver on by the Browns and Bengal's board. Prototypically-sized with NFL bloodlines and a classic "boom-or-bust" prospect. Will need a lot of development, but could be a legitimate playmaker with seasoning. Hand-timed 4.43 in the 40-yard dash makes the clock-timed 4.57 at the Combine a little easier to swallow. Another aspect of his game working in his favor as a "developmental" player is terrific hands (credited with just five drops his entire career). Thomas is a natural pass-catcher, which is atypical for the "big-bodied, boom-or-bust" type of WR. An aspect working against Thomas is the rumor he struggled to learn the very basic playbook Urban Meyer used. Composite 30.3 overall ranking. 3-65: Braxton Miller, WR Ohio State (6'1" 201 pounds) Get used to Miller at #65. If he makes it here, pull the trigger 10/10. To build upon the previous mock, Miller has elite athleticism and can contribute immediately in a number of roles (punt returner, h-back, emergency QB) while he learns the nuances of the WR position. The back-to-back moves at wide receiver mirror 2012 when the Bengals took Marvin Jones (Thomas) and Mohamed Sanu (Miller) in the same draft. Our wide receiver group is one of the weakest areas of the team and we immediately upgrade guys like Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel, Brian Hartline, and Terrelle Pryor. Composite 73.8 overall ranking. 4-99: Cyrus Jones, CB Alabama (5'10" 197 pounds) With questions swirling around Joe Haden's availability, Justin Gilbert's ability, and Tramon Williams' foibles, we could be looking at a starting tandem of Pierre Desir and K'Waun Williams to begin the season. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was passed over due to concerns about being able to play the game again, so he cannot be counted on at this point, either. Cyrus Jones offers starter-ability to start Day 3 of the draft. Some character concerns will exist (dismissed domestic violence charge) which will likely keep him on the board until this spot. Very good in press and man coverage who needs to improve his ability in zone. Offers nice upside as a punt returner (four touchdowns in 42 attempts last season). Composite 100.3 overall ranking. 4-138*: Javon Hargrave, DT South Carolina State (6'1" 309 pounds) Penetrating DT at the FCS-level who posted 16.0 sacks and 23.5 TFL last season. Has the size and athleticism to play the DE spot in our 3-4 and offers some disruptive pass-rush ability, potentially being able to slide inside to DT during passing downs. Composite 135.5 overall ranking. 5-141: C.J. Prosise, RB Notre Dame (6'0" 220 pounds) Despite a well-regarded and generally highly-touted offensive line, the Browns chipped in just 1,147 yards on 310 attempts from their running backs in 2015 (3.7 YPA). Prosise offers every-down size with unexpected ability as a receiver. Still fairly raw, which has him as a Day 3 selection and needs to improve in pass protection. Should work into the rotation nicely and could steal carries from Isaiah Crowell (who's lazy work ethic will likely rub Hue Jackson the wrong way) by season's end. Composite 140.5 overall ranking. 5-172*: Henry Krieger-Coble, TE Iowa (6'4" 250 pounds) Very lackluster group behind Barnidge who will need to prove he can repeat a 2015 campaign that was very atypical for his career. No change from the prior mock where Krieger-Coble offers flexibility as an in-line or receiving tight end and who can develop into a nice starter down the road. Composite 175.5 overall ranking. 5-173*: Victor Ochi, DE Stony Brook (6'1" 246 pounds) Edge defender who would play as a stand-up outside linebacker for Ray Horton's defense. Ochi dominated lesser competition in the FCS, finishing with 13 sacks and 16.5 TFL's last season. Should replace Armonty Bryant in the defense after his numerous transgressions. Composite 179.5 overall ranking. 6-176: Avery Young, OT Auburn (6'6" 328 pounds) Large, mauling right tackle prospect in the mold of Andre Smith (Cincinnati). Austin Pasztor and Michael Bowie should start the competition for the open RT spot but Young offers intriguing developmental opportunity. Composite 186.0 overall ranking. 7-223: Matt Johnson, QB Bowling Green (5'11" 215 pounds) Homer pick! Although Pro Football Focus considers him the "best developmental player" at the position, he will be a late seventh or undrafted free agent given his size (5'11.5"), college playbook, and level of competition. Johnson had incredible success at the college level (almost 5,000 yards, 46 TD, 8 INT, 67.1% completion in 2015). Where Johnson excels is at attacking a defense vertically. He graded out analytically as the No. 2 overall passer last year, behind our No. 2 overall pick, Jared Goff, who was rated No. 1 No composite score. Not rated in the top 250.
Nice draft....I like the first scenario where you go D at the top of the draft better, though I think this draft seems more realistic somehow ...Would have liked a safety in there somewhere but I love the Cyrus Jones pick in the 4th. He'd be a great pick there.....I also liked the Victor Ochi pick and the BG QB is a solid choice in rd 7.....Would rather see Doctson at #32, but Michael Thomas may prove me wrong on that. He didn't get as many opportunities at Ohio State to showcase his skills...All in all, looks solid. We have so many holes that ya just can't address everything....
Agreed. While I love Jared Goff, it seems we may be a ways off from competing for an AFC North title, let alone a playoff spot. I'd rather spend the picks on BPA, which happens to be defensive in this draft. That said, I tried to tailor this mock to more what I thought the Browns would do, rather than what I would do. If you wanted me drafting, we'd have guys like Julio Jones, Kam Chancellor, Russell Wilson, and Tyrann Mathieu on the team... err... bad examples, I guess. O Looking at the roster, we've got: FS: Raheim Moore, Jordan Poyer, Don Jones SS: Donte Whitner, Ibraheim Campbell, Barkevious Mingo Obviously projecting Mingo in there, but I don't know that there's a rookie who can unseat those guys to start the season. I think Campbell is an in-the-box safety like Whitner and could overtake the vet this season. Moore and Poyer are about the same player. While we need upgrades, they need to come from the FS spot and the only one I'd spend a pick on who could start would be Houston-Carson and I've got him with a composite of 88.0. We'd either need to move up from 99 overall or back from 65 overall. Moving back, being the more likely choice. I think he ought to be available around there (more likely than Hargrave) and definitely could add some rotational pass rush ability early on. There's some debate about where his ceiling is, however. Love Matt Johnson. He almost beat Paxton Lynch's upstart Memphis Tigers. Had BGSU pulled that one out, we probably wouldn't be hearing Paxton Lynch's name at all this offseason. Agreed. Again, I've read where Thomas is the top WR on the board for us now and that's from a guy who's citing only sources he trusts not to be draft-season smoke screens. Somehow, that seems like a Browns thing to do. Thomas could mature into a good WR with time, but I see him very limited as a rookie, honestly. That said, our WR corp is one of the weakest groups on the roster and Thomas is probably a Day 1 starter. I would have liked more starters out of this draft, but with a re-build, it may be that they need to acclimate the rookies into the systems before throwing them to the wolves. Goff and Miller would get a chance to sit. Thomas would probably start, as would Jones (at least in nickel situations). I think Hargrave -- if we could snatch him up there -- becomes a starter but I'm admitted very down on Xavier Cooper. I think we will likely spend most of the time drafting on the offensive side while we let the big dollars on the defense sort themselves out under a legitimate defensive coordinator in Horton. We've spent too much money there to load up on draft picks and have them start, in my mind.
re: Michael Thomas Here's a link to a Matt Miller article (whom I love) where he's addressing Thomas. He's Miller's #1 WR prospect this year and he compares him to DeAndre Hopkins. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...holy-grail-qb-prospect-updated-big-board-more
Urgh... I want to put Jordan Howard in that mock draft so badly. https://www.profootballfocus.com/bl...draft-prospects-by-position-from-the-big-ten/ Definitely prefer him to Prosise, but we'll need to land him in the Top 75 picks.
OK, so after much thought...and the understanding this is in no way what I expect to happen...This is what I would personally like to see during the 2016 NFL Draft. I am assuming Josh Gordon gets re-instated and they do not trade him, like the latest rumor floating around. I can't imagine having an asset like that..along with his relationship with RGIII and not keeping him in the fold unless someone offered like a 2nd round draft pick. I don't see any way in hell anyone would give a second rounder for a guy with one year left on his contract and coming off an indefinite suspension. So Here is my vision on the second to last day of March a full month behind the NFL Draft: #1 Titans Jeremy Tunsil OT Ole Miss #2 overall, trade to San Francisco 49ers for #7, #37 and a 2017 First round draft pick #2 49ers Jared Goff QB Cal #3 Chargers Jalen Ramsey S/CB Florida State #4 Cowboys Joey Bosa DE tOSU #5 Jaguars Myles Jack LB UCLA #6 overall, trade to Philadelphia for #8, #77 #6 Eagles Carson Wentz QB North Dakota State #7 (from SF) Browns select {drumroll} DeForest Buckner DE Oregon.. #8 Ravens select Ronnie Stanley OT Notre Dame #9 Buccaneers Shaq Lawson DE Clemson #10 Giants select Laquon Treadwell WR Ole Miss #11 Bears select Ezekial Elliot RB tOSU #12 Saints select A'Shawn Robinson DT Alabama #13 Dolphins select Vernon Hargreaves III CB Florida #14 Raiders select Sheldon Rankins DT Louisville #15 Rams select Reggie Ragland LB Alabama #16 Lions select Jarran Reed DT Alabama #17 Falcons select Darren Lee LB tOSU #18 Colts select Jack Conklin OT Michigan State #19 Bills select Leonard Floyd OLB Georgia #20 Jets select Noah Spence OLB Eastern Kentucky #21 Redskins select Mackensie Alexander CB Clemson #22 Texans select Corey Coleman WR Baylor #23 Vikings select Josh Doctson WR TCU #24 Bengals select Will Fuller WR Notre Dame #25 Steelers select Eli Apple CB tOSU #26 Seahawks select Taylor Decker OT tOSU #27 Packers select Andrew Billings DT Baylor #28 Chiefs select Robert Nkemdiche DT Ole Miss #-- Patriots forfeit Deflategate #29 Cardinals select Cody Whitehair OG Kansas State #30 Panthers select Kevin Dodd DE Clemson #31 Broncos select Paxton Lynch QB Memphis 2nd Rd #32 Browns select William Jackson III CB Houston #37 Browns select Sua' Cravens LB/SS USC #51 Trade with New York Jets, Cleveland trades #65, #176, CB Justin Gilbert and QB Josh McCown #51 Browns select Michael Thomas WR tOSU 3rd Rd #65 Traded to Jets 4th Rd #99 Browns select Jordan Howard RB Indiana #138 Browns select Cardale Jones QB tOSU 5th Round #141 Browns select Jaylon Smith LB Notre Dame #172 Browns select Willie Beavers OT Western Michigan #173 Browns select Victor Ochi OLB Stony Brook #176 Traded to the Jets #223 Browns select Graham Glasgow OG/OC Michigan
SF wuld b NUTS 2 make that trade....give up pick #37 and a #1 pick next yr when they already have a QB on their roster
A QB that will most likely NOT be there following the draft. I don't see how that relationship between the 49ers and Kaepernick is saved. Too much has come out and it seems both parties are willing to move on. If that happens, and I expect it will, the 49ers will want their QB and I think home state product Goff would be the most likely candidate. There are many teams in the past that paid a helluva lot more than that to move up in the top ten of the draft for a QB. Trade value chart has them making out, where I don't believe the chart is very relevant nowadays. All the Browns would need is a two teams vying for a QB and the reality is they could have 3 in SF, Philly and LA. LA isn't very realistic to move from #15 all the way to #2..Philly doesn't have a 2nd round pick, so SF makes the most sense.
SF is far far off and will most likely b picking top 10 next yr.....so they wuld b swapping 1st round picks this yr, #37 and top 10 next yr...thats makes no sense at all when they need picks and can probably get Goff or Wentz at #7
