If hes the 3rd best player and gets paid like hes the #1 player that means u over paid for his services....heck whoever said he was the 3rd best player? One guys opinion or was this a consensus? I dont believe he is the 3rd best player...Kalil, Pouncey, Frederick, Hudson and mayb more
That's the nature of the NFL. As the cap rises so do salaries. No one has ever suggested the highest paid player at a position is the best player at that position. It's often times the most recent person to sign their 2nd contract.
Well, what I was suggesting is that in 2013 he was considered the second best at his position...2014 he was injured and was no longer 2nd best, he was however on the #1 line in the NFL prior to that injury and if he had not been injured could have EASILY been an All Pro once again had the early success continued, 2015 he returned, not exactly to the state he was in pre-injury, but he was beginning to get that back. Now, even if he is the 6th best center in the NFL, he will get paid. That's because the other 5, as beach eluded to, are already in the middle of their contracts and will soon pass his contract status. When Mack signed his last contract 2 years ago, he was the highest paid in the NFL, now he is 5th highest paid, 2 years into that 5 year contract....As soon as he re-signs, making him the highest paid once again...Yes, Frederick will be one of them next off season...he will be passed up by the centers signing new contracts. Alex Mack has been de-valued due to an injury 2 years ago. It is more likely he returns to his pre-injury status, rather than what he was beginning to midway through his first season returning. Despite the run issues the Browns went through...they still weren't too bad at pass protection considering how many times the QB dropped back and the defenses knew exactly what they were going to do.
I would love to see both Mack and Schwartz signed long term, even if it means having the highest paid O-line in the league. Despite the Kapernick and other FA Rumors(click monger gossip), I still really think that the Browns will have a rookie QB behind McCown on opening day, and by Oct./Nov. the rookie will likely be starting. It would be a wise investment and greatly beneficial to his development. In the end I could live with getting one or the other inked to a long term deal. As bad as Erving looked last year I am not ready to give up on him, yet. Losing either Mack or Schwartz would allow Erving to move back to a position he played in College either center or tackle.
Thanks, beach! $20.7 million is a pretty sizable chunk of change. I'd say about two offensive lineman worth, at least.
