    I put this up in mid-March -
NFL Draft General Discussion | Page 92 | Forums (live4sportnetwork.com)

This was a couple days after the Vikings made the trade with Houston for the additional first round pick:
Prior to that move, my general feeling on it was that there was no team with the proper ammunition to move the Chargers out of that 5 pick for a passer, unless the move was a simple pick swap with the Giants.

Good stuff. I've been missing a lot of posts recently so never saw this.

    NFL Draft General Discussion

Here was my thought just before the combine. Admittedly i was suggesting this in relation to the 3rd QB taken not the 4th lol, and i see a WR pick at #5 as much more likely now than i did back then. It may come down to the Chargers grading of WRs who will be in range at that #23 spot? They surely have to add a WR early in this draft.

Side note: I do find it slightly crazy the idea of trading up to #4 for JJ McCarthy. Thats from a position of limited knowledge/research admittedly, but if that play did happen will there ever have been a QB go that high having had so little asked of them in college?

That’s a great question EV, not to my knowledge. However, when you look at the systems of each of these players, it could be argued that JJ was asked to do a lot more than any of the other first round candidates. He made protection calls, adjustments to motion, even free range of audibles, based on presnap defense. I don’t know of any other first round candidates that did any of that.

He wasn’t asked to do as much post snap, but he is the most pro ready pre-snap of maybe any QB since Andrew Luck.

Unfortunately because of the system, his skill set is somewhat of a mystery.

If he can manage to get to the right team, I would predict he is the most successful of this draft class. We all know a bad situation ruins careers, but no one can predict that before the draft either.

I sure in hell hope he's a good one and worth the trade up, cuz all the rumors point to the Vikings snagging him. All of that could be smoke and mirrors... we shall see. Some of the professionals claim he's the ideal NFL QB, but hell, who knows that? Im hoping teams that bring in McCarthy can actually see and discern what he's got.

Agreed, but I think they may go defense with two picks in the first, if they do trade down with Minnesota.

I’m thinking CB and DT may be high on Harbaugh’s list of wants.
It’s an interesting question that can be answered a lot of different ways.

If we’re looking at just the number of pass attempts, then I think Mike Vick probably still leads the pack with the fewest for a passer taken in the first round. Totally different era, totally different style of player, but Vick averaged less than 200 attempts a season for two years as a starter. That’s just such an outlier that it may never happen again.

If we’re talking about in game impact, then the type of attempts McCarthy made should hold some weight, and the kid was absolutely money on 3rd downs, especially the kind where the distance to first has flipped in the defenses favor.

If he goes to Minnesota, I believe he is going to take a seat for a season and be a quality starter in year 2.

If he goes to New England? My confidence drops drastically.

The Giants? I’m lukewarm on them getting enough right around him.

The Commanders would probably be preferable over the previous two.

The fact this is fair pains me. But 10 years of failure and 4 years of Gettleman really mess up a team. I actually like Schoen and Daboll so far they seem to have a good process and I trust in Daboll's ability to develop a QB after watching what he got out of Jones in 2022 and Tommy stinking Devito for a few games last season. I'm luke warm on McCarthy at the moment and while I recognize the guy came up big when he was asked to I don't think he is an ideal match for Daboll anyhow. I went into this offseason thinking QB or bust but I think I have adjusted my position on this quite a bit in recent days. You got to be in love with your QB prospect and trading up for QB 4 seems desperate not love.

A somewhat off topic question, but is anybody going to the draft in Detroit? I’ll be there on day 3.

Former Texas defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat, one of the top draft prospects at his position, was arrested in Austin on Sunday and charged with driving while intoxicated, KXAN News reports.

Sweat, 22, was arrested by Austin police and booked into Travis County jail at 2:12 p.m. Sunday. Driving while intoxicated is a Class B misdemeanor.

    Bond was set at $3,000.

He earned Big 12 defensive player of the year honors and won the Outland Trophy as the best interior lineman in college football last season.

Sweat totaled a career-high 45 tackles, 18 solo tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, one blocked kick and a two-yard touchdown reception in 2023 while starting eight of 14 games for the Longhorns.

He is projected as a first- or second-rounder during the NFL draft on April 25-27.

Really sucks, you spend your whole life building up to get to this point, and watch it tumble in the blink of an eye.. hopefully he does like tunsil did and don't let it define him

As a Giants fan I usually just assume this makes him a Cowboy.

On the brighter side... This might just push him far enough to make it to the Browns first pick... which is round 2, #54 overall. He went #35 in our mock... The Browns don't seem to be phased by deviants.

Circling back to this - I'm starting to lock in on the idea that the Giants are going to be the team to make a move with the Cardinals and snag either McCarthy or Maye with that 4th overall pick.

Lots of chatter of the Patriots going with JJ at 3, so that is something to monitor for the next couple days.

    @RTTRUTH

What do you think about the Colts moving into the top 9 to take a receiver?

Because, as of this moment, I have them doing exactly that in my mock.

The way I see it the Giants are going to do everything they can to get Maye. They have been scouting this kid since the day Schoen arrived at the facility. He fits Daboll to a T. He has crazy arm talent but needs to be coached up. He's the rare modern day gunslinger when the Giants appear to want to be taking more deep shots. He fits like glove.

I honestly have no idea how they feel about McCarthy. And the more I watch the kid the more I just feel like I have no idea what he *can be.* I am not seeing "Trade up to #4 overall" talent TODAY. But what do coaches and scouts know about him that I don't. There is a lot to like there on a foundational level, he has solid talent, seemingly cool headed, runs an NFL style offense. But I can't even guess at a ceiling here - and I don't like to take floor players at the QB position.

Im seeing Maye trending upward over McCarthy now in quite a few circles, some are still thinking McCarthy is a lock with the Vikings, I have my doubts, to be honest. This leads me to believe any trade up for even Daniels, Maye or McCarthy is really really going to cost a boatload, an unprecedented boatload. 3 QB's and 3 desperate teams is driving the price ultra sky-high. Some team, probably the Vikings, lol, are going to do something really desperate, boarder line silly/stupid to get their guy.

It only takes one team to take a deal from expensive to crazy. I really hope the Commies take Daniels second overall because I think that makes things WAY more interesting.

I've had Daniels listed there since the last week of February.

Really starting to tilt towards McCarthy going to New England at #3 and the pick swap between the Giants and Cardinals landing Maye in New York.

Agreed. And here's a thought to - Giants dont trade up to go QB, they go Odunze or Nabers?

This is an interesting bend on things.

The idea that the Giants would be willing to give up capital to grab Harrison at #4.

Huge downside to this - Daniel Jones is locked in until an answer can be found outside of this draft...

This is pretty much my dream scenario. Get Maye without having to give up the farm.
